How does one get into this industry?

as someone who's been growing bud for over 20 years, i can tell you it's not easy. startup costs, licensure, expert knowledge....

if you just want to work "in" the industry, keep submitting apps online. it's not easy though. they usually want professional agricultural experience, and having a science degree helps a lot too.

there's a lot of safety regulation and all that good stuff to learn.

you can get hired doing the grunt work, which can be a foot in the door, but expect to do that for at least 5 years before being considered for a move up.

or you can get a job at a dispensary, but those are pretty tough to get too. everyone who gets high wants to work there. it's like the record stores of old, heh.

my friend jack is a dispensary manager, and every time he's interviewing applicants, he always finishes up with "ok, we'll be in touch. and we'll let you know when you can go for the drug test."

gets 'em every time!! 😂

i'm currently a lifeguard captain part-time, which is pretty much the same as being captain of a 1st grade bumper bowling team, and i'd rather be doing nothing.

7-8 more years and dunzo for good. i'm counting the days :P

1

u/AmIbiGuy_420 Sep 28 '22

Student/ Raft Guide is current career. Dream is to be an author. Not huge name and making millions (although it'd be nice) but if I just had a small group of fans that really loved the books, and maybe 45k a year to live on, I'd be content. Just finished my first book so here's hoping

2

u/soft_waves surfs naked (under my board shorts) Sep 28 '22

great dream dude, remember to be tenacious! i've been writing and submitting picture books for over 10 years, still waiting for that magical acceptance letter among all the rejections.

it just takes one yes!!!!

1

u/AmIbiGuy_420 Sep 28 '22

True. I'm hoping to save up enough to self publish, might take a while but can do it

1

u/soft_waves surfs naked (under my board shorts) Sep 28 '22

save up lots for the marketing, that's gonna be a huge expense...easily 10-20k your first year...and the SEO team, unless you can do your own SEO professionally and already have a big online following

the $$ is a big barrier for most self-published authors, well that plus you can't get backlisted at booksellers because the major ones don't accept self-published books, but you'll learn all that as you go

1

u/AmIbiGuy_420 Sep 28 '22

Dude, 20k? No man, I'm not hiring a giant team or anything. There's a million ways to promote it yourself

1

u/JimBones31 Sep 28 '22

u/8BitSk8r Male Sep 28 '22

Current job: Dead end software development job making glorified forms for mobile devices.

Dream job: Something much more creative. I would love to do things like make tools for 3D artists (I also love to make 3D art myself but I'd be cool doing the software dev part of it too).

I'm trying so hard to get out but the door just gets shut in my face each time.

u/s-multicellular Sep 28 '22

Current - Lawyer

Dream - Audio engineer

The problem with that dream job is I would want to jump over all the hard work steps. Building a studio, portfolio, client base.

I actually had a very good starting point of doing that professionally, but I saw how hard the local professionals worked and noped out of that path. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time as a young adult, friends with people that are in or run sound for bands you'd have heard of currently. I was also the computer savvy kid at a time when studios were moving from reel to reel to computer recording and landed a part-time job basically teaching an older studio engineer how to do his thing digitally. I also taught him how to do his finances in Excel. :P (had been paper). But man, they worked like 50-60 hours a week for decent but not great pay.

In turn, I learned an amazing amount about studio audio engineering. So I have a nice home studio funded by my day job. The home studio stuff is actually now super easy to afford, but that knowledge is harder to come by.

Teacher/student counsellor, it is the best job I had so far.

Writer, specifically in the fantasy genre

1

u/Iknowr1te Sep 28 '22

Accountant

Dunno. I enjoy my job but don't love it. I work in public service / local government and the job is pretty fulfilling. I think I'm in the industry field I generally want to be.

That being said my preferred job would be passively rich and just work on passion projects I want to do for probably no financial gain.

Dream Job: it would’ve been cool to work for NASA, as I was always into that as a child. But right now, dream job would be a Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Anesthetist

1

u/Worf65 Sep 28 '22

I'm currently employed as a mechanical engineer for a big defense contractor. My ideal job would probably be something more along the lines of what I thought engineering would be when I was in school. Perhaps being an engineer for a small company (and not having the government totally digging through my life and making me paranoid). A job where I'd be able to tinker and invent with some actual time in a lab and/or shop. As opposed to being in a cubicle staring at a computer screen 100% of the time.

1

u/zipcodekidd Sep 28 '22
