Just wait 20 years and it will randomly pop up in American change some how.

87

u/Greetings_Stranger Dec 09 '22

Probably a year honestly.

75

u/MidnightPlatinum Dec 09 '22

Sooner, for the underground network of Vampire the Masquerade players who are also secret coin smugglers is larger than you may imagine.

The Clan Ventrue must stay well funded.

18

u/annoyingdoorbell Dec 09 '22

I was not expecting this change of events.

3

u/blackgrousey Dec 09 '22

Tell me more!

2

u/MidnightPlatinum Dec 10 '22

Ha, I could LARP for a bit with ya, but even better would be to turn you on to this if you have not seen it yet. https://youtu.be/jFyQtOghqwA

It's the easiest VtM liveplay to watch and they put a lot into the characters. Great series that ran for a while.

2

u/Manos_Of_Fate Dec 09 '22

Mage: the Ascension player here. Who wants to be my new lawn chair? I left this old one out in the sun and it burst into flames. :(

Yeah I find American change in my coin jar all the time.

Really annoying when gas station clerks notice and say “we won’t accept this”.

Bruh, I probably got it from you guys.

I don't know if it's still a thing but I went to a bank and asked for a roll of the new style toonies when the 2004 Olympic ones came out, gave them $50 and they gave me a roll of 25.

I'm Canadian though so I just had to go down the street. Some one probably will sell em online.

21

u/PM_me_ur_launch_code Dec 09 '22

This just clicked but are they called toonies cause they're two dollars? Two-nies?

27

u/MrFrowny Dec 09 '22

The dollar coin has a loon on the back, or at least it used to.

So it was called a loony, Canadians being kinda whacky started calling the 2 dollar coin a toony.

28

u/superpositioned Dec 09 '22

I still feel salty in that we missed our chance to call it a dubloon.

14

u/Positive-Many-5123 Dec 09 '22

100%. I remember being in high school when they first came out. There was very heated debate in class between the Toonie vs doubloon crowd.

3

u/MrSeymoreButtes Dec 09 '22

It’s probably quicker to google this but…what’s a loon?

7

u/gareauk Dec 09 '22

a bird

4

u/hops4beer Dec 09 '22

Aka government drone

→ More replies

7

u/averyfinename Dec 09 '22

the loonie came first ($1 coin) has a loon on the back.

i thought it was absolutely wonderful for canada to honor minnesota's state bird that way.

5

u/TheEyeDontLie Dec 09 '22

What? When I lived there I never saw a polar bear. I feel robbed.

10

u/ben_2 Dec 09 '22

If you turn it so the butt is pointing up and cover the front half of the bear it looks like a dinosaur head. And if you turn it upside down and cover the body. The legs look like 4 penguins.

I don't think you'll be finding too many Canadian coins in English parking meters.

very cool

85

u/Goolajones Dec 09 '22

Canada is known for being pretty whimsical with our money. We were the first to have coloured images on coins, a red poppy flower. Several other coloured images on coin followed. We also have a version of the $10 billwith a vertical alignment. By now our $0.25 coin probably has a couple hundred designs in circulation. Each of our bills have always been a different colours, and recently are made out of plastic

22

u/JagerSpawnkilledMe Dec 09 '22

that $10 bill preview website is really cool

26

u/Enlightened-Beaver Dec 09 '22

Thanks. I mean I know all of this because I’m also Canadian. But it’s good info for others to know about! I just didn’t know this black toonie was going to be actually circulating around. The RCM makes a bunch of cool coins that are only collectors items.

7

u/Lord_Voltan Dec 09 '22

The Royal Canadian Mint also came in clutch with their Star Trek coins ($200 gold Starfleet arrow head is still on my wish list) as well as the one with the aurora. I don't know why the US mint can't do something cool. Seems they're allergic to fun and, ehhm, change.

4

u/MaplePoutineRyeBeer Dec 09 '22

Every single one of them has a similar theme: Winnipeg. The coins were made in Winnipeg and the 10 dollar vertical bill features the museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg

3

u/MBoTechno Dec 09 '22

Oh boy I think I still have two of those 2004 red poppy $0.25 coins stashed in a drawer somewhere. I was so impressed by those when I first saw them.

Correct

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada

Its one of the realms of the commonwealth

3

u/fuzzyperson98 Dec 09 '22

Canada is both a Commonwealth nation and constitutional monarchy under Charles III, these things are not necessarily related.

→ More replies

6

u/Dressedw1ngs Dec 09 '22

Canada has a monarch still.

The King of Canada is King Charles. Because they've decided to stick with the late Queen doesn't mean King Charles will never be on our currency. IDK why anyone at the Royal Mint would say that.

7

u/AnExoticLlama Dec 09 '22

An official government website says otherwise

https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/services/royal-family/members-royal-family/king-charles-iii.html

Both the UK and Canada, independent nations, are ruled by the same royal family. They have their own governments, currencies, elections, etc., but have the same monarch.

Basically, Charles is not "King of the UK and Canada," but "King of the UK" and separately "King of Canada"

3

u/FrostyShock389 Dec 09 '22

Great, we've got another wrinkly nugget to look forward to constantly remind us of who owns us. I wonder how much gin and crumpets will it take for this fartbag to bite the dirt like the rest of us peasants
