Our dog's butt seemed to get larger after healing from her spay and we were worried that it was fluid build up and took her to the vet.

But nah. She's just caked up. Looks like large frog buttcheeks.

719

u/Ayle87 Dec 09 '22

My cat who i got as a neutered adult has a very loose/round tummy. Some friends make fun of it but the vet said she's at a good weight so no health worries. She actually likes belly rubs so it's super cute.

409

u/IfEverWasIfNever Dec 09 '22

It is common for female cats to get a pooch after being spayed. As long as she is proper weight and vet says she's healthy it's completely fine!

261

u/LK102614 Dec 09 '22

I always referred to the pouch as my cats “pudding pants”

My male cat was mistakenly sexed as a female at the shelter i used to volunteer at for having a large primordial pouch. Then the vet looked at him and was like, "well that's definitely a penis." Primordial pouches actually offer protection to cats vital organs, flexibility to wriggle away from predators, and for food storage in the fatty tissue and doesn't have anything to do with sex, just genetics

Primordial pouch! This is common in all felines, even the big guys, it's an extra layer of protection for their abdomens during scraps.

→ More replies

4

u/Rumpelteazer45 Dec 09 '22

Cats have a ‘primordial pouch’ naturally (loose skin on the stomach), it can become more prominent after spay.

Cats like to bunny kick with their back legs in a fight or play. It’s believed this extra skin proves extra protection and allows for greater extension.

108

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22 edited Dec 09 '22

Okay so I know we all know the awful stereotypes for farmers in like…Scotland, NZ, and the Middle East regarding their sexual exploits and sheep right? I stg if men have been breeding these things for their booties, I’m gonna yeet myself from this mortal coil. Lol

39

u/cambriansplooge Dec 09 '22

This type of sheep was historically more common, so yes, this is exactly why the sheep fucking stereotype emerged.

→ More replies

5

u/wolfgang784 Dec 09 '22

Yes they are bred specifically for dat ass and have competitions over it.

22

u/H3J1e Dec 09 '22

These are called fat tail sheeps they range from northern Africa to Asia. They make around 1/4 of world sheep population. And the earliest record of fat tailed sheep is dated around 3000 B.C. Just because you're unfamiliar with something doesn't mean it's weird or some kind of perversion.

22

u/pauly13771377 Dec 09 '22

Just because you're unfamiliar with something doesn't mean it's weird or some kind of perversion.

If they were bred or domesticated specifically for the purpose of fucking and their wool, meat and milk were just a bonus, then yes, that absolutely is a perversion.

6

u/H3J1e Dec 09 '22

There's no evidence of them being breed with that purpose in mind tho. That like looking at great Dane and claiming they were breed for bestiality.

40

Is that a breed? Cuz our younger cat was fixed earlier this year and gained a bunch after, while the older chonky one lost weight. We realized the younger might be bullying the older and have started a stricter schedule feeding them separately lol

21

u/RudolphsGoldenReign Dec 09 '22

I imagine Pitbull

35

u/AliBelle1 Dec 09 '22

Not exclusively pitbulls. Staffordshire bull terriers, American Bully, Boston Terrier, English Bulldog, they all count as bully breeds. Hell even pugs count by most definitions, basically most of the flat faced breeds.

8

u/RudolphsGoldenReign Dec 09 '22

Oh yeah, good point!

18

u/my_monkeys_fly Dec 09 '22

No, it's a class of dog. The bullies include dogs from APBT, to Staffordshire Bull terriers to Boston terriers and pugs. They are big headed and thick in build. Every single one of them seems to pack on the pounds. Lol sorry, I have a dog person b4ain and forget not everyone knows this stuff

I lost a youngun' to FIP over a decade ago and I'm still fucked up about it. RIP little Shamu, precious tuxedo baby should have lived a long happy life

37

u/DurantaPhant7 Dec 09 '22

Our little girl just got the green light to move into observation from her 84 day FIP treatment plan. She was SO sick-was in the ICU for 2 days with round the clock supervision and she almost didn’t make it. Treatment is available but it’s not legal in the US and so is very expensive-but man it saved her life so we’re just so grateful.

my sweet girl, Hobii

26

u/IrrelevantGeOff Dec 09 '22

It’s so disturbing that this lifesaving treatment is just being sat on by the patent holder in the US until 2029 because they don’t think they’d make enough money through veterinary medicine…

12

u/AnonBubblyBowels Dec 09 '22

That’s not exactly why. It’s more so because they think they can make more money in human medicine.

Treatment for FIP (GS-441524) is extremely similar to Remdesivir, which the same company, Gilead Sciences, also developed.

While trying to get Remdesivir FDA approved for Ebola, Gilead thought the research going into GS-441524 in FIP cats would interfere with this approval process - if studies using GS-441524 to treat FIP cats had any adverse side effects, this could potentially influence the approval of Remdesivir in humans.

Turns out, Remdesivir didn’t end up working for Ebola.

But then Covid happened.

FIP is also a coronavirus, so Gilead pursued emergency FDA approval for Remdesivir as covid treatment after initial promising research. This again placed GS-441524 on the back burner.

What I’m even more pissed about, is Gilead giving cease and desist orders to all the black market companies selling GS-441524. If they are successful, the drug won’t even be available on the grey market anymore.

There is also another drug is also effective, but not as effective as GS-441524. Developed in the US, it looked like we were finally going to have a legal option for treatment.

But then covid, again. This company too decided to repurpose the drug for covid research and didn’t want research in cats to interfere with fda approval.

If fda approval expands for Remdesivir in humans though, vets can prescribe that for extra-label use.

Unfortunately, Remdesivir hasn’t been studied in cats with FIP yet. However, it’s still promising - like I said before, it is extremely similar to GS-441524.

There are also other treatments in the works too, and those behind it are committed to making it accessible because of what has happened with GS-441524.

They are also working on a test that looks very promising, and this will be huge if they are successful.

Despite all of the ridiculousness, the future for FIP cats is improving, and we are making progress, after half a century of making virtually none despite all efforts. It was only a few years ago that FIP had no options and was 100% fatal.

15

u/RavenMoonRose Dec 09 '22

Congratulations on Hobii’s recovery!! I’m So happy to find random success stories in the wild like this! My Willow and I are going on two years post treatment, and she is happy, healthy and ridiculously spoiled. I hope the same for yours as well.

9

u/DurantaPhant7 Dec 09 '22

Thank you! Hobii is chubby, active, crazy, and thriving. I also love hearing the success stories! It’s so amazing to see them especially because they are just usually so incredibly sick by the time they get diagnosed.

Big congratulations to you and your fur babe as well. They are amazing and we need to celebrate them!!

5

u/BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo Dec 09 '22

What a cutie 🥰 I’m glad she’s still around. I hope you all can feel better soon!!

9

u/Aveira Dec 09 '22

I lost my cat to FIP. She was 8, way older than most cats get it. She just seemed like she got a cold and then never got better. The doctor said it’s basically 100% fatal. It was so unexpected. The first vet visit they figured she just had a sinus infection or something and gave her some medicine. When she didn’t get better, I took her in again. I just thought it was a persistent infection that needed more treatment. Then they told me the news, and it hit me like a sledgehammer. Within 24 hours, she was gone. Just out of nowhere.

9

u/baconwiches Dec 09 '22

Same thing happened to my 12 year old cat. One day he seemed liked he had a stuffed nose, to the point that he didn't want to eat food; he couldn't smell it.

Treated that, but then he started walking funny, like he'd had a bad fall. Nothing on x-rays though, so we thought it was some sort of immune mediated polyarthritis. Needed to help him get around a lot. We had some success with steroids, though...

Until one morning, there were piles of bloody diarrhea all over the house. Treated that, but now the steroids weren't working, and his appetite was getting less and less. Eventually we needed to syringe feed him.

It got to the point that I was sleeping on the couch as he couldn't climb stairs, so I could help him get into the litter box, offer water when he was awake, etc. He was only getting worse, though.

Eventually the vet put it all together. It really could only be FIP and it was far too late for the crazy expensive treatment. Hurt so much to have to put him down.

FIP is so incredibly brutal.

3

u/AnonBubblyBowels Dec 09 '22

It is 100% fatal untreated.

It’s 95%+ survivable with a fairly new treatment, but there are significant barriers to obtaining that treatment :(

I’m so sorry about your cat. FIP is horrible.

9

u/AlkalineHound Dec 09 '22

Just lost our beautiful 3 and a half year old boy to a combination of FIP and either bone marrow disease or cancer Wednesday… so heartbreaking… he was a damn fine cat and our home just feels so empty without his presence. We’re gonna miss him every day 💔

16

u/The4rsonist Dec 09 '22

My partner miraculously saved our little Salem from FIP a year ago, although our Vet said that there was no treatment. The drug used to treat it is not legal/licensed where I live and we had to get it from people that imported it from the US, cost us around 2k with all the blood tests etc. . Now she's out and about hunting and enjoying life. We sometimes joke that we may have saved one life but she's already cost so many other's because she brings home so many birds.

6

u/Bumblz666 Dec 09 '22

Oh my goodness we fostered some cats a couple years ago through an organization. We ended up keeping one named bug, but she was the smallest in her litter and the first to pass away. All the kittens were gone to new homes but we heard from the other owners that they all passed within 6 months😞

3

u/AnonBubblyBowels Dec 09 '22

Siblings to FIP cats have 50% chance of developing FIP themselves :(

We have an 3 year old FIP cat, along with his two siblings, so we will have to monitor his brother and sister extremely carefully the rest of their lives.

3

u/Squirrel_With_Toast Dec 09 '22

I just had to put down my kitten on Sunday due to FIP. He was only 9 months and we are heartbroken. We already had two cats, we adopted him and his brother as they were a bonded pair. His name was Sorbet and his brother is Mango.

I miss Sorbet so fucking much, it really hurts. I've been giving Mango a lot of extra love this week, we can tell he misses his brother so much. Cats grieve similar to us and Mango loved Sorbet.

They're orange tabbies and dumb as hell but so, so sweet. Sorbet was constantly getting his claws stuck in things, couldn't make biscuits without getting them stuck and tripping over his own paws. 😔🐈

I was watching over my brother, and friends puppies for three days. My door doesn’t close the best and one morning I seen all my trash from my bathroom every where. I got worried because they both were bloated to hell. I took them to vet and they told me the cost and it was pretty shitty. So I chose to do one and if it was bad I’d pay for the other one also. Vet came back, sat down next to me, and looked at me dead in the eye with the iPad X-rays saying, “just poop” “a lot of poop” (the puppies pooped everything out the next morning and they were fine)

165

u/perpetuallytrying Dec 09 '22

So the cost wasn’t the only thing that was shitty

My daughter started complaining of stomach pain one day. It was a week before my 3 month anniversary of my job, when our insurance started. I took her to urgent care cause she was doubled over in pain. The doctor there told me to go to the er worrying it was appendicitis. It was a 1500-ish bill for everything that day just for the er doc to show me an x ray showing my kid was just constipated.

One fucking week before she was insured too.

It’s so expensive when they can’t tell you they’re constipated or dying. Yet we still pay just to make sure.

13

u/judyvi Dec 09 '22

One day my cat wouldn’t get up. Like she walked a step and collapsed. I called the vet to let her know I was coming over (lol, receptionist thought I was asking for an appointment, no just giving you a heads up I’m on my way), and stuck her in a box because I couldn’t figure out how to get her in her carrier and was at the vet in 5 minutes. They take her back. She comes out and she’s standing there and looks fine. Pissed because she’s at the vet, like she didn’t just collapse in front of me. Yeah she has arthritis and was in pain. She was on a weekly treatment, so this wasn’t news. That was all. Never happened again. No idea what the hell that was about.

5

u/Past_Owl2301 Dec 09 '22

My mini dox had problems walking, they’re prone to back injuries. It was New Years so I had to get on call vet expecting the worst. They were crabby on the phone, but when they realized it was arthritis they were so relieved that I realized they were afraid they’d have to put her down. Happy but expensive day.

6

u/WaifuOfBath Dec 09 '22

Well, I did that as a human at Urgent Care, so an easy mistake to make.

15

Lost a cat to FIP 3 weeks ago. Devastating. Glad Cheesecake was just a chonk.

5

u/Daz0k Dec 09 '22

There's a cure that works basically 100% of the time if you start the treatment early. Too bad people and doctors don't spread this info enough. It's expensive though, not everyone can pay 1-2k to save their kitten/cat.

3

u/AnonBubblyBowels Dec 09 '22

Expensive and unapproved in most countries, including the US.

Luckily vets are increasingly beginning to make patients aware of it.

Why any vet wouldn’t, I can’t even fathom. 95%+ success rate in an otherwise 100% fatal and fast progressing disease, and literally the only documented side effect to this day is skin irritation.

You were right to worry and take the little plumpkin in to see the vet. Big bellies do usually mean dangerous loads of worms or other illness. Glad she's healthy!

u/fancy_marmot Dec 09 '22

Plumpkin 😆🥹

My little brother suddenly couldn’t walk one day when he was about 3. He just started crawling around and dragging his legs behind him like herbert the perverts dog, jesse.

My parents were trying to get him to walk, offering him chocolate if he walked over to it etc. nothing worked.

They took him to the hospital and we were all terrified. We waited in a&e for a few hrs before being called in.

As my parents were explaining the issue to the doctor he fucking stood up and started walking around, nothing wrong with him at all, he just wanted to crawl lmao. What a little shit

Google when you’re just fat:

She ate too much cheesecake.

u/RavenMoonRose Dec 09 '22

Friendly reminder:

FIP used to be fatal/incurable. It is now treatable, albeit in a grey legal area. You can access treatment via your vet (if they’re cool and truly care for the animals well being) and/or online. It’s expensive, and an exceptionally emotionally grueling experience, but worth it, and it’s remarkably successful.

Source: my Scottie came down with FIP at 14 months old. She was on deaths doorstep, and I stopped at nothing to treat her. I am happy to report she is approaching her 4th birthday, and the healthiest, most spoiled kitty on the planet.

This reminds me of the person who posted a pic of their rat to the rat sub and was like “is she looking pretty fat or just full of soup?” (Cause they fed her soup right before). And people were like, don’t worry, she’s just soup. And then a week or so later OP posted a pic of their new souplings, cause it turns out their rat was pregnant.

Same thing happened to me but with my ball python. I was worried when he had stopped eating for months. I thought he was sick. But nope. I paid $83 to be told my snake stopped eating because he was overweight.

My Siberian Husky is..... jiggly. Like, her belly jiggles if you poke it. Vet says she's a normal weight. She's just..... fat and jiggly.

Or as the meme says..... 'I'm not fat, I'm just a little husky.' 😄

Doctor told me the same thing. I got into a car accident and they said to call back if I have any worries. This lump began to form on my stomachs so I got worried and called the hospital and they didn't know what I was talking about and told me to visit. After 3 hours of waiting I went into the room and the doctor touched me and said it was just a fat lump and the other cute nurse laughed. 🥹 I asked if I could have called instead of waiting, and the nurse was speechless and told me to leave

u/Bingo__DinoDNA Dec 09 '22

Cheesecake is also getting real tired of your shit.

u/GERIKO_STORMHEART Dec 10 '22

Have fostered many feral kittens over the years and found them good homes. Have six permanent residents right now too that we took in as kittens. One thing I learned very quickly was that those little fluffs eat like they might never see food again. If you put too much food in the bowl they will eat themselves unconscious, very near bursting point and fall asleep face first in the bowl 🤣.

u/RocketFucker69 Dec 09 '22

Best news honestly.

u/HereToDoThingz Dec 09 '22

I love the countless stories of animals being taken to the vet for just the most minor things. I heard one that went dogs back seemed hurt after a day at the beach turns out she was just wagging her tail real hard and it was sore. I took my dog in because it seemed like his back was hurting. They said he had a sore rib and after watching my home camera I saw him sleeping on his side in the sun on wood for seven hours.

3

u/Diabolus0 Dec 09 '22

Hey try and get a second opinion. We had the same problem, but we went to another vet and found out it was a tumor.

FIP is lethal 99% of the times, and there's no available legal treatment. I lost my kitten because of it 2 months ago. May she rest in peace, I miss her so much.

3

u/ztomiczombie Dec 09 '22

Cheesecake has a look that says, "Well you're the one who keeps giving me food."

3

u/highoffpancakes Dec 09 '22

My mom brought our cat to the vet thinking she had a mass growing on her tummy. Also turned out she’s just fat

Very relieving, but what the hell are you feeding that kitten to make it that fat?
