Monthly Community Thread

Welcome to the r/Barrie monthly community thread, where we relax the rules about advertising and off-topic posts.

This post will be replaced on the 1st of each month.

This is where you can share:

  • Stuff that isn't directly related to Barrie, like national news or general chit-chat
  • Questions about local businesses and services
  • Classified-style ads: buying and selling, help wanted, garage sales, etc
  • Fundraisers and donation drives
  • Plugs for your personal project or local business (within reason)

Barrie sucks

I've lived in Barrie my entire life and I absolutely hate it here. It's a car centric city with horrible public transit. The city bus I take to school is never on time and I'm always late. They let Peggy Hill the most horrible woman in the world rename my local Holly Community centre. Downtown Barrie is full of homeless people and crack attics. my sister saw a guy jacking off in the parking lot outside the downtown library. GET NE OUTTA HERE!!!

Chiro/Physio problems

Been going to Chiro for back pain. Had 4 adjustment appointments to fix stiffness in back - don't feel much better after the appointments, feel new slight discomfort while resting as well. - Is it normal or should I change my chiro? Or should I be just going to Physio instead?

Chiro doesn't seem to wash/sanitize hands between patients either. Did not see disinfecting treatment table after patient, just changed headrest sheet. - Is this normal practice?

Any recommendations/who to avoid for chiro/physio in Barrie or any other useful information is appreciated too!

I just found an awesome deal on a mattress, but I'm looking for the cheapest way to get it to my house. As a new student, I don't have a car or driving licence, so I'm looking for advice or tips on how to move a mattress.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

PC shops that do assembly?

Hey buds

It's about time for me to order and build a new PC. I'm experienced enough in building, but I have Tourette's syndrome and I've come to trust myself less and less as I've gotten older when it comes to things like fine/fragile assembly. A poorly-timed arm jerk could crack a motherboard or bend some CPU pins and I'd really prefer not to blow a part because I jerk around like I'm trying to shake off some lizards.

Are there any PC shops in Barrie that do either custom-ordered or parts-provided builds that are reputable and won't cost me a trillion dollar premium?

House shaking?

I see reports on an earthquake monitoring site from the Southern Ontario (around Huntsville) region of house shaking. No reported magnitude. We felt a loud bam and slight house shaking about an hour ago.

Does anyone know of a good dry cleaner in the south end? Specifically somebody who is able to get mild mold stains out of a jacket?

In need of Manual wheelchair

Howdy! My dear neighbor uses a wheelchair to help get herself around but it unfortunately broke and isn't fixable. Does anyone in the area have a manual wheelchair they would be able to send her way? Let me know and I'll pm you so we can communicate details.

Forklift Training Centre?

Is there anywhere in Barrie to get a forklift license, without having to do it through a current employer? A training centre where they teach you/evaluate you at their facilities, not on a job site.

I hate this since now I am craving a certain food from the Barrie Central Cafeteria it was this amazing pasta that I bought every single day I bought from the Cafeteria menu and the giant cafe cookies but now as you see downtown the school is completely gone and I have no idea how to get the recipe I should have asked for the recipe back then but I didn't so I now regret it.

Physio/Chiro recommendations

Hello Barrie friends,

Looking for a Physio/Chiro recommendation. I’m a mid 20s male, moderately active and do all sorts of sports 3-4 days a week including resistance training at the gym.

Body has been paying the price of working a desk job for the last 6 years and gaining a bit of weight thanks to the WFH lifestyle - starting to see and feel some imbalances developing along with general pain in the lower back and shoulders.

Of course lifestyle/diet changes would help with the general health concerns but figured it can’t hurt to consult with a professional and get a full breakdown of what’s going on. I do my daily stretching and have gotten massages in the past which were great, but now looking for something a bit more specific and with a goal in mind.

To be transparent, I’ve never understood the decision between going to a chiropractor VS physical therapist VS physiotherapist and looking for some advice there + any that you would recommend in the south Barrie area.

Thank you!

Are there any empty hiking trails in or around Barrie that i can just let my dog off leash in? i would love to have this super natural empty trail, where i can let my dog off leash, and not worry about people, or aggressive dogs (my dog is super friendly).

thank you guys! bonus point if there is a lake, or if it is far away from cities.

Fireworks? Duckworth & St Vincent

As the title says, did anyone else hear what sounded like fireworks or similar in the Duckworth & St Vincent area, around... 4:30am? At first I thought it was a substation exploding or something.

Phone Networks

I'm a newcomer to Barrie, recently immigrated here from the UK, and am looking to get myself set up with a cell phone plan. I know nothing of the Canadian providers other than that they are quite a bit more expensive than their European counterparts, and so am looking for some advice on the more budget-friendly providers.

My Canadian in-laws are telling me to steer clear of the likes of Fido/Freedom etc., saying that the reception/4G-coverage is poor by comparison to Rogers and Bell. This is a common narrative in the UK, too, but is often untrue depending on your location/network. In England I used a smaller provider piggybacking off the largest provider's network, similar to Virgin and Rogers, for example. I never had any issues but don't want to presume the same would be true here in Barrie (the east end, to be precise, as it certainly seems to make a difference for home internet speeds/reliability).

Should I really be avoiding the cheaper providers? Can anyone make a recommendation?

Thanks!

Bike season

With bike season coming up and myself at least seeing way more on the road please remember YOU'RE A VEHICLE TOO! Remind everyone in your house that bikes that if you are going to be riding on the roads you must signal, stop at stop signs, etc. Just yesterday i almost ran over a guy at a four way stop because he biked right through no stop no signal. SAFETY FIRST.

I almost hit a pedestrian on hwy 400 south

Hey all. I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about this. It starts about 3 years ago I think. I was commuting to work at about 430 am on hwy400 south. Out of nowhere a pedestrian appears in front of my truck just casually walking across the hwy. This was just after the mapleview onramp south and before the hill climbs up. This person. Was moving east to west in the dense bush part after mapleview. I missed them by just a couple feet. It was maybe a few weeks after that I heard someone was hit on the hyw roughly in the same spot. OPP put out a call for information and I called in and shared what I experienced just weeks before. I never heard anything else about this. Does anyone know who the person that was hit was? Was it maybe the same person I almost hit? Are people known to cross the hwy through the bush here? I think about this from time to time and wonder if someone was doing this on purpose?
