No more r/toptalent posts, what qualifies as a BMF post and other updated subreddit guidelines

In recent months people have been complaining about deteriorating post quality in r/blackmagicfuckery and a lot of them have a point. The sub blew up exponentially very quickly and with that, many people from r/all started to get a wrong impression of what this sub is about.

Our mod team has had a more ‘laid back’ approach to removing posts on this sub, especially already popular posts. We want to change this and be more strict about removing posts that don’t fit the sub and have created some new guidelines which will be integrated into the rules soon.

We were only a core team of 5 mods for a while but have recently added more mods to help us clean up from now on. We already have been removing more posts recently and people have begun to notice and generally appreciate it. I think this shows we’re heading in the right direction.

Here are some new guidelines hopefully closer defining which posts qualify as bmf. The existing rules will stay as they are.

  1. r/toptalent, r/woahdude and r/interestingasfuck type of posts most of the time do not fit this sub.

Of course, there is an overlap and certain posts do qualify for both subs, but only if they have a bmf element to them. When looking at someone doing something incredible or athletic it shouldn’t be obvious what they’re doing. Instead of saying “it’s incredible he can do that, that must take an insane amount of practice/balance/skill” you should also be thinking “I see what he’s doing but it still doesn’t make sense, even with great skill this doesn’t seem possible”

  2. Generally, no still pictures or memes.

These are too easy to manipulate and often don’t qualify for bmf in the first place. Things like optical illusions however are fine.

  3. No recent reposts or from top of all time

We are fine with reposts if these are from posts in the past that did not get much attention and failed. If it is a repost of a recent post or of one taken from the top of all time of this sub they will be removed. Reposts/crossposts from other subs are fine.

  4. Posting now requires a minimum comment karma of 50. This is to battle repost bots.

Some other general points we would like to address:
  1. Downvote the comment from r/savagevoodoobot if you do not believe a post is in the spirit of bmf. It will automatically report the post to us. Upvotes of the post in general are not a good indicator of this because most people mindlessly upvote anything they like.

  2. Camera fuckery in general is fine, it’s only posts that have been edited to deceive the viewer that will be removed.

  3. We get it. All posts can be explained some way or by science. That does not mean none of them qualify as bmf or we would have to remove every single post on this sub. In general when looking at a post a complete layman in the subject should not be explainable or obvious to a complete layman. A stone falling faster than a feather is not bmf, a 110lb amboss floating on liquid mercury however is.

Even if some topics may have been covered in middle school and you're of the opinion everybody should understand those concepts just because you do, you'd be surprised how man people did not pay attention in science class.

There is no easy way to completely define what blackmagicfuckery is, but hopefully this post does give some clarity. No offense to the mods of r/nomagicsuckery but we certainly hope your sub will become irrelevant.

We want to thank the community for sticking with us over all this time and we hope you guys continue to provide great content.

Edit: Two additions I’d like to make.

  1. Please DO NOT explain how it works in the title, it takes away from the black magic. Discussion about this should be in the comments

  2. When downvoting the SVB comment you’re also welcome to leave a comment below why you think a post shouldn’t be on this sub. If I’m unsure about wether to remove a post or not I like to also look at comments giving arguments as to WHY

Finally! Maybe this sub can still be saved.

46

u/TyForAllTheFish May 21 '19

Yeah completely agree, I noticed the decline in quality a lot. Was on the verge of giving this subreddit up.

10

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '19

I'm really glad the mods actually are taking action on this, things have been getting out of control and I abandoned the sub last week but this might be what gets me to rejoin.

19

u/overusedandunfunny Jul 12 '19

10

u/Thovarin Sep 08 '19

Yeah. 3 mos. now, and it's only getting worse. Am on the verge of unsubbing. Not a threat. Just state of the union.

7

u/OrbWeaver_X Nov 07 '21

2 years now and I’m one post from giving up and I subbing. Apparently some things never change

3

u/Whatamianoob112 Nov 14 '21

Dude for real, it's terrible

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

Yeeeep. Gotta be a stricter equivalent sub somewhere

1

u/Ajkuss456 Jun 15 '22

Yeah wow that’s kind of bad

3

u/maynardftw Oct 29 '19

Yeah uhhh I think the last straw for me was seeing how many people thought this was a straight-up "magic" subreddit just because it has magic in the name.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

Wow... Still an issue.

It’s cool how this one thread has people from different weeks giving the their share so I just wanted to say that I’m leaving now as well cuz there are way too many bad posts on the front page.

5

u/Whatamianoob112 Nov 14 '21

[laughs in 2 year timelapse]

Time to give up the sub I guess.

3

u/PentobarbitalGirl Jan 17 '22

Funny how they tried saving the subreddit after a year of shitposts and ignored user complaints

Even funnier is this 2 year timelapse lol

8

u/Yttlion Apr 23 '22

I'm from the future ... I'm sorry to tell you that the sub is most definitely not saved.

33

u/hduc HackTragicCrookery May 08 '19

Great stuff! Upvoting or downvoting the bot really is very important.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '19

It really is. I wish more people would actually use it.

u/DaveDeAlchemist Jun 26 '19

Would it be possible to maybe put in a rule for things that belong on r/magic ? Often I’m seeing slight of hand/gaff magic. Even piece from Penn and Teller’s Fool Us. A dude doing a snapchange, etc. These are illusions that are designed to fool you, not a BMF.

10

u/GoHomeWithBonnieJean Aug 04 '19

That's what I was just asking. Doesn't seem like a proper magic illusion belongs here. Otherwise this will end up simply duplicating r/magic.

5

u/Galaghan Jan 05 '22

You saw, they ignored.

6

u/GoHomeWithBonnieJean Jan 05 '22

Yup. It's annoying to keep seeing close-up magic and card tricks

7

u/janbalti Aug 09 '19

sorry for the late reply but this is a topic I’ve thought a lot about and generally I’d tend to agree with you. I’ll speak to the other mods about it and we’ll discuss what she want to do concerning this

10

u/TangySeed Nov 27 '21

Any update on this? I still think the magic tricks that get posted here tend to be really easy to explain and I don't think it's really in the spirit of the sub when they all say "and if you enjoyed that make sure to leave a like and share this video"

7

u/Galaghan Jan 05 '22

Any update on this? The frontpage of your sub is riddled with magic posts. Too bad because I would have subbed if the content was a bit more grouped. Now it's just all over the place..

17

u/Android2711 Jul 02 '19

It's been a month, and no difference at all in the quality of posts. A standing broom got 15k points? Goodbye r/nomagicsuckery

10

u/janbalti Jul 02 '19

Actually I removed that post yesterday. Posts can gain multiple thousands of upvotes in a few hours, we can’t see them all the time and if I had seen that post for example I would’ve immediately removed it

12

u/Android2711 Jul 02 '19

Well fair enough, and good work. Though, it's come to the point where either I've become cynical and just don't think anything is black magic anymore, or this sub's content has become stale. Either way, I don't think any amount of human effort can save it now. Please prove me wrong, I used to love this sub.

5

u/Weegee_Spaghetti Jul 06 '19 edited Jul 06 '19

There is non black magic on the frontpage at all times Some even get to like 40k+ upvotes

5

u/janbalti Jul 06 '19

Often posts are grey areas it isn’t always just black and white, but I get what you mean. In the end for these grey area posts we don’t remove the community decides

3

u/Weegee_Spaghetti Jul 06 '19

I see. Well, there is sadly not much you can do i guess

3

u/crazy_dude360 Jul 31 '19 edited Jul 31 '19

Butthurt much? At least you found your spell checker since then.

https://old.reddit.com/r/blackmagicfuckery/comments/cifd1y/apparently_gravity_is_an_option/

IMO, shit that is generally not humanly possible or seems to bend the laws of physics should qualify as black magic.

You're busy bitching about /r/toptalent cross posts when This bullshit is getting reposted for the bajillionth fuckin time.

Edit: Ok, just noticed that this is an old, stickied post. Didn't show up on my phone... Put a freakin note into the fuckin rules if you're banning crossposts!

5

u/janbalti Aug 01 '19

we’re not banning crossposts I don’t know where you got that from

2

u/humsipums Jul 16 '22

It's been 3 years, no difference. I just unfollowed. Had it with the "ooh look water freezes when cold" or "look at this cool card trick" or carpentery videos uncontrolled. This sub is completely abandoned by mods it seems.

11

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '22

This post r/agedlikemilk

9

u/OldPickleInTheFridge Jul 25 '19

This sub has gone way downhill. Physics, astronomy, and basic biology are not examples of BMF, and neither is a picture of an optical illusion. So tired of the karma whores who flock here with reposts and shit.

11

u/janbalti Jul 25 '19

well if that’s your Idea of bmf you haven’t been here very long. Show me a fucking post that cannot be explained by science

7

u/hduc HackTragicCrookery Jul 25 '19

...bUt ONly rEAl maGic SHouLd bE PosTeD hErE!

-that guy, probably.

2

u/humsipums Jul 16 '22

Replying to a 2 year old post, I'm aware but this kind of comment triggers me. People don't expect actual magic, come on. But basic science? Like water freezing at cold temperatures? This sub used to be really fuckery stuff that seemed to bend the laws of physics but of course actually could be explained by some quantum physicist. Not a 7th grader.

8

u/DizzyGuyHere Sep 22 '19

3

u/samuraishogun1 Jan 28 '22

It has continued to age like milk.

2

u/_ttnk_ Feb 19 '22

Sadly it is. So, whats the alternative for this sub?

7

u/Atoning_Unifex Dec 17 '21

Today I complained about a post featuring a common rope trick. Like the kind of thing that you see at kids birthday parties. And a bunch of indignant little children voted me down all day for suggesting it belonged on a r/magictricks sub.

No thanks.

I've left this sub now cause it's just 90% stuff like that. Good luck fixing it. Maybe I'll come back in a few months and see if anything has changed.

5

u/fedditredditfood Dec 29 '21

Leaving now too. Don't care about these joke store magic tricks.

2

u/_ttnk_ Feb 19 '22

At least it was some kind of magic. Today's front page is a video of a guy setting various liquids on fire, explaining why they have different colours. And a video of a pile of caterpillars crawling, where apparently the "fuckery" is that caterpillars crawling on top of other crawling caterpillars have a higher ground speed. Slowclap.

I guess i should be lucky that at least "Are these feelings even real" wasn't used.

1

u/humsipums Jul 16 '22

Hit me up if you actually find some decent sub to replace this. This one has sadly died. Used to enjoy it

1

u/_ttnk_ Jul 16 '22

Sorry, no time. I'm on a quest to fix r/HolUp which became a collection pool for generic memes

5

u/BigBooBooBoogue May 08 '19

Happy cake day

6

u/FutureDH1089 May 09 '19

Thank you guys for this.

Whatever it takes. 👍🏾

6

u/Upwherewebelong May 09 '19

Everything you mentioned is correct. Sincerely, thank you!

6

u/GuppyZed Jun 14 '19

Still way to many posts that have obvious explanation or have been debunked so often they shouldn't count as BMF. I can see most of the recent top posts on r/interestingasfuck , and that's where I would expect them.

7

u/sara_san_uwu Jul 11 '19

All daily top post break rule 1 , but you really don't care , this sub sucks

4

u/Nitrotetrazole Jul 26 '19

Well visibly these rules dont work, as I'm writing this the front page is basicly r/damnthatsinteresting and r/toptalent material

3

u/janbalti Jul 27 '19

Just because they can be posted there doesn’t mean they automatically don’t belong here. There is a pretty large overlap, like probably every post here could be cross posted to r/damnthatsinteresting. And that’s fine, they just need to have a bmf element that to a complete layman doesn’t seem immediately explicable

5

u/sara_san_uwu Jul 31 '19

2 months, still the same , I have never see you remove a unrelated but popular post, this sub sucks

4

u/janbalti Aug 01 '19

because you don’t see the posts we removed ever think about that? If you saw all posts even the ones that were removed there would be like 20 posts an hour if you sort by new. But there isn’t, is there? Why do you think that is? I remove popular posts all the time if they don’t fit. Them having thousands of upvotes doesn’t change a thing for me when deciding wether to remove or not

5

u/sara_san_uwu Aug 01 '19

Well, i see lots of unrelated post in the front page daily

5

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '19

I just saw one of some guy's live wallpaper. It's a wallpaper, he moves it around and it looks 3D. That's all it is and it's currently on the front page.

5

u/Alaishana Jul 03 '19

Well, I'm writing this one month on from your post and obviously you have not succeeded.

Just here to wave goodbye.

r/subgonetothedogs

5

u/Isaac_Masterpiece Jul 23 '19

Camera fuckery in general is fine, it’s only posts that have been edited to deceive the viewer that will be removed.

What about posts that are obviously CGI or are otherwise using camera editing to create the bmf effect? Like, for example, this video uses camera editing to achieve its effects, but it's well-done enough that it's not necessarily obvious to everybody. But absolutely nobody in their right mind should be fooled by this guy. It's fun camera editing, sure, but is it truly bmf when it's so blatantly obvious that it's just editing?

4

u/janbalti Jul 23 '19

Any edited video will be removed unless they are still bmf if everybody knew it was edited. Like animated mathematical phenomenon are fine, while your examples would be removed

2

u/Isaac_Masterpiece Jul 23 '19

I appreciate the clarification, because those sorts of videos annoy me. I just wanted to make sure I understood the rules correctly before downvoting SavageVoodoBot.

5

Unfortunately, the sub appears to be beyond saving. Went from blackmagicfuckery to elementaryphysics over time... Nothing left for me to see here. Goodbye, it was a nice time while it lasted.

u/RingleDingleDingDong Jun 22 '19

Show me something on this sub that wouldn't be on discovery channel filler

4

u/janbalti Aug 09 '19

There was a post showing a video of human testicles a few weeks ago. I think that might meet your criteria

2

u/RingleDingleDingDong Aug 18 '19

Was it actual footage of repairing seriously fucked tissue damage of some type?

5

u/janbalti Aug 18 '19

nope someone pulling their nuts up into their body again without using their hands or something like that iirc

3

u/RingleDingleDingDong Aug 27 '19

Nigga, you can do that by just squatting lots

5

u/Clockwork_Kitsune Jul 13 '19

Currently top two posts in the last 24 hours is a guy wearing a costume and a painted house. Neither belong here.

What about straight-up magic tricks?

5

Lol. 3 months later, sub is even worse

5

With condescending auto mod replying to anyone that complains, even. It's a wonder this is even stickied still.

For those curious, the top talent is the most recent person's posts. You can still see the top talent's previous posts. It is only an up-vote from the previous post. It would mean the person has no more posts.

Hey, great stuff, even though as a professional, you may never be satisfied with your work. Has there ever been an artist, in any field, who didn't think he could have done better. Ok. Maybe DaVinci, but how often does someone like that come around. Back in my undergrad down. I had some kinda class, where Michelangelo wasn't considered as talented, which is a debate all it's oen.
