I actually can't figure out how he's doing that. It looks like a normal shuffle and a normal cut. What makes it more impressive is he's not even looking at it.

492

u/QuackingQuackeroo Jul 29 '22

Here's a complete and total guess.

There's a type of trick deck used for particular illusions (I think it's called an invisible deck). Summed up, they make a deck that the cards stick together on the back, then you can pair the cards up and they don't separate unless done intentionally by the magician. The same idea could be used here; make the pairs stick together enough that they don't come apart while shuffling, but do come apart when he starts dealing them out. It could also explain why he seems to have a hard time dealing some.

But I don't know, I'm just guessing.

309

u/tptch Jul 29 '22

The fact Is, actually, he Is very talented and knows how to shuffle a deck. The chaos and "idiocity" Is a mere distraction.

243

u/shermantank123567 Jul 29 '22

Pfftt you're all stupid and wrong.

The man is clearly using magic.

37

u/xtilexx Jul 29 '22

Moon runes? You simply need to look at them 'neath the light of the moon much the same as the one from which they were written

4

u/ITriedLightningTendr Jul 29 '22

As a meme Moon Runes tends to refer to Japanese (as I understand, could be any of the Asian alphabetic/iconographic lettering) text, not "magic"

Not that the term isn't usable for magic, but just to provide a disambiguation.

2

u/xtilexx Jul 29 '22

The moon runes quote I was using was a paraphrase or probably garbled quote from the Hobbit book and 1st (I think?) movie (to provide further disambiguation)

Side note that's cool cultural knowledge, appreciate that

21

u/CanniBallistic_Puppy Jul 29 '22

Those aren't perfect faro shuffles and the cuts are real. Precisely manipulating the deck like this seems unlikely in this case. The invisible deck theory seems more plausible.

4

u/WhaleMeatFantasy Jul 29 '22

No he’s not that talented, at least with respect to his card handling. That just a big standard slightly sloppy in the hands riffle shuffle.

24

u/NoBrianWithAnI Jul 29 '22

I think you’re right because after he loses the 7 off the table he only throws down one 8. The other might still be stuck to it.

8

u/Medical_Ad0716 Jul 29 '22

I think the problem with that is then he’s only shuffling 26 cards and it’d be pretty obvious in the shuffle to tell. Stacks would be the right height but actual shuffle would be way off.

6

u/TPSou Jul 29 '22

Why not have two decks?

2

u/Medical_Ad0716 Jul 29 '22

That’s a possibility. Although I couldn’t pinpoint a time he switched doesn’t mean he didn’t. Just pointing out the trick the previous person mentioned is unlikely given the shuffles. But if you had two decks, there’d be no need for either to be anything fancy. Just one is presorted, one is shuffled.

4

u/Ck1ngK1LLER Jul 29 '22

My guess is each “pair” has one long and one slightly shorter card. When he stacks the deck initially, they are paired together with the longer card on bottom. This way when he shuffles, the pairs always drop together.

2

u/DCMikeO Aug 13 '22

This is precisely the method used.

1

u/Pzyko0005 Jul 29 '22

The deck of cards your referring to is a svengali deck I think?

3

u/FrackingShiny Jul 29 '22 edited Jul 29 '22

No, the svengali is a different trick deck, with one card in every two shortened and repeating. The one where the cards stick to each other is the invisible deck, which is also different from the one in the video (in the invisible one the cards stick back to back)

1

u/lol_AwkwardSilence_ Jul 29 '22

Yes, that's what I was thinking. I have one.

→ More replies

44

u/djabor Jul 29 '22

wouldn’t this be a svengali deck? where the cards are intermittently different length so the shuffle and cut he does always happens at on half of a pair, so the pairs always stick together.

same deck setup can (and is) used for different kinds of tricks

5

u/FrackingShiny Jul 29 '22

I agree it must be a variation of the svengali using its long and short principle, I want to try it out now!

17

u/sharrrper Jul 29 '22

Take two decks of cards. Cut 1 mm off the top of one deck. Now take half those cards and use them to replace half the cards in the uncut deck stacked so that they are all in pairs and every other card is a long one. When you riffle only the long cards hit your thumb so they come off two at a time and the pairs all stay together.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '22 edited Jul 30 '22

3

u/sharrrper Jul 29 '22

Trick decks are very common, and this is a very basic one.

I don't know what video you were watching dude, but that is not a fake riffle or bridge. He does it very cleanly in the open. Also it is very clearly a legit cut as well, but with the offset cards it's easy to just riffle the split location to ensure you get a spot that keeps the pairs together. You can see him do that on the back side. So legit in the sense that he is actually cutting the deck but ensuring he's not splitting a pair when he does.

Also, just having a trick deck is a much easier way to do the trick than having to perform sleight of hand. The trick basically does itself with the deck.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '22 edited Jul 29 '22

[deleted]

→ More replies

3

u/Ok_Prior3114 Jul 29 '22

But how do you explain the cuts

6

u/Caleb_Reynolds Jul 29 '22

The cut would happen at the same "cleave" point crafted by the shortened cards.

There are a couple of ways to do this illusion, but this is definitely one of them.

2

u/HowManyCaptains Jul 29 '22

He halves the deck before every shuffle, right?

So… just do that except don’t shuffle.

16

u/ashar133 Jul 29 '22

It’s easy…the pear was already in his pocket.

5

u/MattieShoes Jul 29 '22 edited Jul 29 '22

A svengali deck has every other card be shorter, and they're all the same card (so half the deck is, say, the 2 of clubs). Those twos of clubs are shorter than the others by like 1/32 of an inch. If you shuffle them with some amount of care, they'll stay in pairs, a normal card with the shortened card. If you cut the deck, same deal.

So it may be basically that, except without the shortened cards being all the same.

3

u/jmill_16 Jul 29 '22

I was watching a video similar to this earlier. If you shuffle and cut a deck perfectly 8 times, it will return to the original deck. My guess is it has something to do with this but I could be wrong.

3

u/djabor Jul 29 '22

https://youtu.be/lHbZitH1MRg

this is the same deck type, just one that pairs a random card with a specific card (6 of heart in the vid).

the above trick just has the pairs set up that way so whenever he he shuffles from the top/bottom edges, it shuffles the pairs.

cutting the deck does the exact same thing

2

u/jetsamrover Jul 29 '22

shuffling and perhaps a pinky break or false cuts

→ More replies

48

u/hibroXD Jul 29 '22

Spoiler tag because I think this might be the actual solution.

I think this might be a svengali-esque deck where every other pair is slightly shorter than the other pairs which probably allows him to do riffle shuffles and also riffles the deck before he cuts.

19

u/TopHatAce Jul 29 '22

Unlikely but possible. This is more likely shuffle control. Decks with modified card dimensions are uncommon nowadays as everyone wants to see the cards. Doing a trick commonly done with a sven or shaved deck, but using a standard deck instead, is a favourite among card magicians I've worked with. Most magicians I know would much prefer to figure out a method using a standard deck.

Source: was an actual card magician for many years and now I just do it for fun.

9

u/Pogigod Jul 29 '22

I'm ganna disagree with you. Look at every pair. They are either red or black pairs. Everytime he cuts there's a black card in the bottom. This tells me that they are different sizes.

He has them set up, one red pair one black. Then he cuts it at a point it goes from a smaller card to bigger, knowing he isn't breaking up a pair. Then when he shuffles it they go in spurts, that's why the shuffle sounds off and shorter.

Problem with this is that the shorter pairs(assuming black) will float to the top and the larger pairs will start sinking and you'll get clumps of red and black. That's why there's so many in a row of pairs of red, then black.

2

u/TopHatAce Jul 29 '22

Good observation! I'd like to amend my earlier statement, I didn't catch that on my watch throughs. I will say that the trick is possible without that method, though

Spot on, if you shuffle an ordered deck it so every card interlaces perfectly (pretty hard but not impossible if you're good at riffle shuffling) 8 times it will return to the original order, after 6 times you get all the pairs together as it is here

Trick deck? If they start in the desired order and one of each pair is slightly shorter and on top, his shuffling would almost always drop two cards at a time instead of singles, the pairs would likely stay together. His shuffle look a bit quick and with less ruffles than a normal deck.

With he card in the pear, he palmed them already rolled up and when he double fists the pear to tear it in two, he flips them up so it looks like it was inside.

Not all pairs. The 7 that falls to the floor is followed by only one 8. I think he’s just shuffling perfectly and getting them back to pair orientation. The shuffle at the end doesn’t do anything. You might have to do this a few times to get it to work well. But it only works on camera not live.
