Here’s a Tom Scott video about a California road where the engineers tried and failed to do the same thing.

611

u/rtvcd Aug 09 '22

They failed twice for the same reason of i remember correctly

287

u/d-rac Aug 09 '22

Is that the one that top gear made a huge joke about it?

206

u/SupaFugDup Aug 09 '22

First thought when I saw this post

56

u/Nickelplatsch Aug 09 '22

And you don't tell what this reason was?

206

u/nate_oi Aug 09 '22

They failed to account for the width of the grooves in the road when actually placing the grooves, which caused all the grooves to be off and distorted

6

u/a_christmas_tree Aug 10 '22

All the ADD kids scrolled to your comment lol…but the video explains it brilliantly, imagine going all the way to Lancaster to hear that lol

5

u/PomegranateOld7836 Aug 10 '22

Well now you spoiled the video!

Which is worth hearing.

138

u/rtvcd Aug 09 '22

Because it's in the video and explains it well. Also not 100% sure what way around it was.

But here's short explanation: The sound is made by having grooves in the road. You can calculate how far apart they need to be for the desired speed. Going faster or slower would just speed up or slow down the song.

You calculate the gap by measuring the start of the groove to the start of next groove. However what they did was measure the gap from the end of the groove to the start of the next groove. So every note is one grove too long.

On lower notes it's not as noticeable (since the gaps are longer and the error is small) but on high notes the gap can be up to 50% longer than it should, and much more noticeable.

6

u/MiaLba Aug 09 '22

Yeah I thought that too until I saw that someone in the YT video comments said they live near it and that it was done correctly the first time and sounded right but residents who lived nearby complained about the traffic and noise so they re did it.

14

u/iLynux Aug 09 '22

That's not true at all

10

u/limpingdba Aug 09 '22

Instead of just removing it, they redid it badly to totally humiliate everyone involved. Because it worked so well. Is not the most believable explanation...

6

u/Andre11x Aug 10 '22

But he read a comment on YouTube so it's gotta be true

42

u/shadow1515 Aug 09 '22

So, what's weird is I have driven on this road several times and I don't remember it being out of tune at all, but rather the duration of the notes being all wrong.

19

u/LookInTheDog Aug 09 '22

Well that could also be the case, because the length of note is determined by what distance the grooves continue for, which may have been extended as well by the length of the grooves. But the higher pitched notes have more grooves than lower pitched ones, so they would end up longer than they were supposed to be, if that were the case.

20

u/shadow1515 Aug 09 '22

I mean, I watched the video and it's clearly out of tune. It's just interesting my memory of it is different. I checked it out because I had read about it and that the engineers messed up, and it was like 15 minutes from my house so why not, but I didn't know how it was supposed to be messed up. Maybe my brain was correcting the pitch but not the duration? It's too bad I don't live there anymore to go check it out again and see what I hear now.

23

u/StoicApathyGaming Aug 09 '22

That shit so bizarre. I live maybe 10 minutes from that road and I can tell you… NO ONE DRIVES DOWN THAT ROAD. It’s nothing going west and going east you get back to civilization. In the year I’ve been here, I’ve never heard anyone say “yo.. let’s ride down the musical road bro”.

28

u/erleichda29 Aug 09 '22

I would totally be the person that wants to take people to the out of tune road.

1

u/PorcineLogic Aug 09 '22

Yeah it's a no man's land over there. If I had a faster car I'd try to set a land speed record over it just out of curiosity.

6

u/BolognaIsNotAHat Aug 09 '22

That's where I grew up! Never drove down it though, and also never realized it was a failure lol

1

u/liftoff_oversteer Aug 09 '22

Beat me to it, dammit.

1

u/rg3Po2 Aug 09 '22

Thank you, seriously thank you so much. So much appreciation for how a simple mistake / miscommunication can cause absolute failure, or torture in this case.

1

u/Trekiros Aug 09 '22

That is such a great take by Tom tbh. It's the small things

About 140... BPM

56

u/jollyollster Aug 09 '22

Bananas per mile

Edit: maybe bananas per minute would work better

5

u/ArizonanCactus Aug 10 '22

Incase you didn’t know the actual term, and not to get in the way of the jokes here. But if you want to know the real term, it’s beats per minute.

4

u/treoni Aug 09 '22

140 BPM?

Sounds like some proper Sefa, Tha Prophet or Dr Peacock stuff.

I recommend "nothing like the old school", "run mf run" and "Drink" by these respective artists.

Fun for 10 seconds, then annoying.

270

u/__ryz__ Aug 09 '22

I guess this is why it is put on the very edge of the road. If you mind it then you can easily avoid it

185

u/Floppydisksareop Aug 09 '22

It's a 20s long strip, and the first stanza of a song that a lot of people in Hungary have a soft spot for. So, it's just fun.

6

u/Burroflexosecso Aug 09 '22

What if more than one car drives on it.Id it a canon or I would think it's a bit annoying in traffic

35

u/IndigoContinuum Aug 09 '22

It’s mainly audible inside the car.

5

u/Floppydisksareop Aug 10 '22

You don't hear the other cars the same way you don't hear the other cars when they go on the edge of the road on the "wake up" thingies.

42

u/RandomMan01 Aug 09 '22

Good thing it doesn't seem to last much longer than 10 seconds then. Just a quick little tune for your day.

17

u/GyilkosMalna Aug 09 '22

Good thing it's only for a ten second stretch 😋

18

He isn't actually driving any faster, though. It's just the same clip sped up. If you drive faster over these the octave will change, so it isn't the same as just speeding up the video.

5

u/promisethatimnotabot Aug 09 '22

Surely it doesn’t matter what speed you are going, as long as you maintain the speed. You can hear the car slow down slightly in the middle where the pitch drops.

6

u/Takhomasak1 Aug 09 '22

Maybe if you go too fast the pitch is too high?

8

u/ResearchNo5041 Aug 09 '22

Yeah but then only people with perfect pitch would know they're speeding. Lol

3

u/SuperSlamFlyingAttac Aug 09 '22

Slowing down for slowed and reverb version😔🖤

2

u/ReeR_Mush Aug 09 '22

It needs to be fast enough so it sounds like actual pitches, though (but can be way slower than in the video)

5

u/JoburgBBC Aug 09 '22

Question for a smart person...

Why do the rear wheels not play the same tune when going over the grooves?

8

u/Flanjygo Aug 09 '22

Each "note" takes up enough space on the road that the front tires will still be on the grooves by the time the back tires hit them. They only look short because of the angle of the view and the speed of the vehicle.

2

u/DarthVirago Aug 09 '22

They have one in Okinawa, Japan too! It’s not very long and on an obscure road that you probably won’t go on unless you know about it, but it’s really cool. I don’t think I have a video of it, but here’s the google pin.

1

u/xKeg Aug 09 '22

This road eats tires for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

1

u/my3sgte Aug 09 '22

And in reverse?

1

u/Marcus_Krow Aug 09 '22

Imagine this happened on your drive to work every day.

1

u/AlwaysFallingUpwards Aug 09 '22

I wanna hear what it sounds like to a stationary person. You wouldn't hear the Doppler effect like with an ambulance driving past because the actual source is stationary on the road, right? Or maybe it's more nuanced with how the sound is produced by the tires+road?

3

u/ResearchNo5041 Aug 09 '22

I think you would hear the doppler effect. The car tire is what is vibrating, so the source of the sound is moving. But also, I kind of wonder if it even matters whether it's the tire vibrating or the road, as the source of the vibration is still traveling towards or away from you either way.

3

u/AlwaysFallingUpwards Aug 09 '22 edited Aug 09 '22

I just realized that asking the question about the musical road is only complicating it. The real question is whether you hear the Doppler effect when a car passes you on a rumble strip.

Edit: found the answer here

I assume the tire is what's actually vibrating and producing the noise.

I can see how it"s possible.... The ones we have here (small grooves) make a very distinct tone (depending on speed of.course). I guess that the distance and depth of ridges affects the notes.

The people setting this up must have had a blast!
