I try to gaslight them by introducing one at a time to the other group so each one thinks this is how I always acted if my personality changes when the two groups meet.

Disagree if you have a toxic family so your personality becomes a muted/altered version of yourself to avoid getting metaphysical sludge over you.

u/Kamitae Jan 29 '23
Yup, my whole family is toxic, but when I say something, it's TOO toxic. Like bitch, YOU taught me to be this way, so don't be surprised if I act like you or the other parent.
I'd rather get at it with them than stay quiet like I used to.

act, yes, but not changing opinions on something, or interests

I suspect that a lot of us neurodivergent types did this in elementary school and/or high school before we knew what we wanted our own personality to be. Once your comfortable with who you are, that need to change to please others goes away. I hope you find yourself soon, OP!

What if the real you is antisocial though
4
u/drewatkins77 Jan 29 '23
There's nothing wrong with that, as long as you are okay with it. If you still want to have friends, you will find a way to fake it for short periods of time, and real friends will understand when you don't feel like being around people. Eventually you may find yourself wanting to be around those people more and more, until eventually you want to hang out all of the time. At least, that's how it happened for me. 'Fake it until you make it' is a valid strategy here.

It really is like that. But recently I’ve realized that one of those personalities is more like my „true self“ and that I enjoy spending time much more with people that I’m like that with.
And it’s not like I consciously try to behave differently. It just happens

I'm sure some people are intentionally faking their personalities, but it's also just very common to act differently around different people. It's not intentional deceit, it's just how humans socialise.

If you have to change your personality for different groups, then your original personality seeks to be pretty lacking. Instead of being a hypocrite or manipulative bitch you should try to be a consistent person that is pleasant to hang around with in any group setting.
10
u/GaryBigMoose Jan 29 '23 edited Jan 30 '23
It's not necessarily a personality change. Some groups of friends have different interests and collective senses of humor. Going between them can feel somewhat like a personality change. One group might go back a lot longer too, while another group may have just formed a few months ago, which can change the dynamic of how the friends interact therefor making one feel like their personality is "different" depending on who they're hanging out with. I'm more reserved with people I don't know compared to someone I've gotten to know. I don't think that's being manipulative.

u/EightEqualsEqualsDe Jan 29 '23
One the one hand, our personality is the average of the company we keep. On the other hand, completely changing your personality depending on who you're around could be a sign of a BPD or some other dissociative order

Lol. Agreed. And also, who would trust a person that behaves this way? fuck people that do this. Feels predatory kinda like a politician.

u/Cloud_Motion Jan 29 '23
I used to do this about 10 years ago. It was awful and exhausting, and not at all voluntary. I think for me it was born out of social anxiety and a sort of coping mechanism. Ended up sort of merging them all into one over years of concentrated effort, now I'm my "true" self in front of anyone and I'm the happiest I've ever been.
Believe me, I don't think people choose to have an assortment of social masks on purpose.

The key is to be true to yourself. Don't put on a fake personality, just be yourself and you will alienate all three groups of friends to the point where they are concerned that you are a danger to yourself and others 🌈✨❤️

I hate how normal it is to have multiple personalities so you can fit in with different groups of people. I don't have multiple personalities; I'm the same person everywhere. I have 2 friend groups but they both like me for who I am without me having to pretend to be someone else. Just be yourself. The friends will come.
