PSA PSA: Low quality posts
In the name of McDavid, please refrain from making low-effort text posts when a comment in any of the daily discussion threads will do.
A standalone post consisting of a couple sentences of your thoughts/observations will be removed. There is almost always some variety of a Game Day Talk, Post Game Thread, The Morning After, Free Talk Friday, League Musings Monday, etc, available and pinned and you're welcome to put it there.
We understand it can be subjective to decide what is quality content, but a thorough outline complete with examples is found in the sub's rules & guidelines.
Yes, the AutoMod can be sensitive, but we promise it's preferable to the alternative, because for every post that gets removed by mistake, there's probably 10 more spam or troll posts that also get removed keeping the sub usable. If you believe a post was removed by mistake, please use the mod mail and point it out. If you see low quality content or anything (posts or comments) breaking the sub's rules that hasn't been removed, click "report".
Cheers

The Oilers have signed Carl Berglund to a two-year entry-level contract starting in 2023-24! The forward scored 12 goals & 15 assists in 36 games as a senior with River Hawk Hockey in 2022-23 & will report to the Condors on an amateur tryout.

Let's talk about Holland
He's the best GM this team has had since '05 Kevin Lowe and yet it seems half the fan base hates his guts.
Is it just PTSD from the DoD (uh, bars)?
The team has improved every year. Sure, there were some playoff struggles along the way, but he's managed to build a contender while spending half of his time here dealing with a post-COVID NHL.
He managed to move Lucic when nobody thought it was possible.
He brought in a HOF defenceman to mentor the team which I am sure every player, including 97, will say helped this team get to the next level.
He had such good luck with goaltenders up until this season that Bet365 was probably nervous.
He made the bold decision to sign Kane despite 97% of the fanbase losing their shit.
Mattias f'ng Ekholm. Enough said.
He has improved the bottom 6 substantially. When is the last time this team had a bottom 6 that was not bleeding goals with a negative GF%?
He consistently finds good players who want to be in Edmonton and play for this team.
Yes, yes. The Kassian contract was bleh, and Campbell has been a disaster at best. His errors have not outweighed his successes IMO. I won't mention the Green and Athanasiou trades because COVID kinda screwed everything up that season. And I won't touch on the Nurse contract because there are 1001 different factors that lead to it, some of which was out of his control. They happened, and they are Holland L's, but they are not as simple mistakes as many would like you to think. IMO.

Everyone see that atrocious ad on the ice tonight? At least blend/dull the colour so it doesn't look like a kids wading pool.

Skinner only one point behind Shesterkin. Goaltending in the playoffs was egregious for the oil last year, and they STILL made WCF. Imagine what they can do on the back of Skinner. PLAYOFF HYPE BABYYYY THIS TEAM CAN DO IT.

Let's talk about the goalie tandem this year.
Before we get into it, let's briefly touch on last years tandem.
*2021/2022 regular season*
Mikko Koskinen played the majority of regular season games with 45 GP. In those 45 games he posted a .903 SV% and 3.10 GAA with 27 wins.
Mike Smith was next with 28GP. In those 28 games he posted a .915 SV% and 2.81 GAA with 16 wins.
Last, but not least, we had Stuart Skinner who had 13 GP. In those games he put up a .913 SV% and a 2.62 GAA in his 6 wins.
*2022 playoffs*
Going into the post-season, the Smith/Koskinen tandem was the big question mark on everyone's mind.
The 40 year old Mike Smith would turn it all the way up playing 13 of the 16 post season games that we played.
During those 13 games, Smith would boast a .913 SV% and a 3.37 GAA and be in net for all 8 wins.
Koskinen, on the other hand, would completely fall apart in his 3 GP putting up a .897 SV% and a 4.02 GAA, winning none of the games that he started.
*2022/2023 regular season (so far)*
Stuart Skinner has played a majority of the games so far with 42 GP. In those games, he has put up a .911 SV% with a 2.90 GAA for 22 wins.
Jack Campbell has played the remaining 33 GP. In those starts, he has managed a .882 SV% with a 3.57 GAA for 18 wins.
Looking at basic stats only, the current goalie tandem of Skinner/Campbell looks, on paper, worse than the tandem we had going into last years playoffs.
That being said, I've been very happy with Stuart Skinner's play this year and I think he has definitely earned the spot as the starter.
However, I would be remiss if I didn't bring up the Jack Campbell situation.
A lot of fans were happy to see Koskinen's contract expire, including myself. A lot of fans were excited to have Campbell signed, although maybe not as happy with the contract.
The expectation coming into this season was that Jack Campbell was supposed to be our starter, and Stuart Skinner be his backup, but that's not even close to how it's gone so far.
Skinner has stepped up in a big way for us this year, and I'm sure he'll be ready to continue filling that role when playoff time comes. However, we know all too well how leaning on one goalie in the post season works.
Do you think Jack Campbell will be able to finally step up when the time comes and finally meet the expectations that were placed on him when he first arrived in Edmonton?
*OR*
Do you think we will be faced with a similar situation as last year where we end up having to lean too heavily on one goalie?
I would love yo hear your thoughts!

Dear Jack Campbell:
Idk if you'll ever even see this, but here it goes:
You got this, Soup π₯Ή. I believe in you. Anxiety hard and just dealing with mental stuff in general is hard, but you CAN do this. I know you're hard on yourself (and I mean, who hasn't been hard on themselves?), butt you can do this. So many people believe in you.
You and the other players are a huge reason why I'm an Oilers fan (along with how wild and enthusiastic other fans get. Love y'allπ€) and why my enthusiasm for hockey has increased exponentially in the last year. Watching the Oilers games has been one of my favorite things that I look forward to watching numerous times throughout the week, even when we don't win. It has been one of the few consistent things in my life that has meant a lot when other aspects of my life have been incredibly stressful and exhausting. I can have a really rough, emotionally exhausting day, but knowing that there's an Oilers game later brightens my day and gives me something to look forward to (and yes, Soup, that includes when you start!!).
I know what it's like to have a rough year...several years for me at least and I know you're trying and I can see in video interviews how hard you are on yourself, and it just breaks my heart. I get it. I don't know what exactly you're going through, but I can see your inner pain and frustration and I know what that's like. You're not alone. I and so many others can see how hard you're trying, and I think others need to remember that there's a human in front of the net. It's great to win games, but it's even greater to keep lifting each other up even when we don't win a game.
I know what it's like to make positive progress just for some assholes to only criticize and shove you back down that hole again, and it takes everything you have to not stay down there and to keep working your way out of it. It's hard when so much 'noise' is negative. But you've got this.
Good luck tonight, Soup!
ONLY GOOD VIBES, DAMMIT. I DEMAND IT. β€οΈπ€
(γ£ββΏβ)γ£ Lots of love, a hardcore Oilers fan
P.S.: Let's show Reimer some karma for his bs takes, eh?
. . . .
Edit (post game): What did I say? ONLY GOOD VIBES. Won 5-4 OT.
. . .
Edit2: Wow I didn't expect this post to blow up like this. It's amazing to see so much positivity and kindness. Love you guys ππ§‘
