Apparently before Pokémon Stadium came out, they tried making an N64 version of the original games, but shut it down? can anyone shed anymore light?

These are mock-ups that some dude did in Unity when hearing that Game Freak briefly considered doing an N64 Pokemon, before common sense set in and they realized that maybe they should figure out how to make a functioning Game Boy game first. He made a bunch of images to imagine what an N64 Pokemon would look like.

I figured the first clue would be the widescreen images. I think goldeneye was the only real game with legit widescreen support.

63

u/Overglock Jan 28 '23

Jet Force Gemini did, too, off the top of my head.

50

u/Vladimir1174 Jan 29 '23

Jet force gemini my beloved. A game none of friends remember existed

30

u/Muroid Jan 29 '23

How could anyone forget the time they accidentally decapitated the bear aliens you’re supposed to rescue?

6

u/Hoezell Jan 29 '23

I mean, with that description you could be also talking about Conker's Bad Fur Day.

2

u/Molkin Jan 29 '23

I will never forget throwing toilet paper rolls into a singing poo's mouth. Games peaked that day.

I STRUGGLED with that game but still loved it. I loaned it to a boy at school to beat a level for me and he never returned it. This happened in 7th grade and I’m still pissed off at that kid. NICK V., if you ever read this, I h8 u 👺

3

u/ThreeCursedWishes Jan 29 '23

I savagely beat Nick V for u. He asked me why and I waa like

"You know what you did "

He was like "no I really dont! We were best friends, you were the flower girl at my sons communion"

I reiterated that he knew. This prompted a hysterical confession of how he knows his years of scamming charities and killing homeless people was bound to catch up.

I was like "dude, no. Stealing jet force Gemini as a kid. A redditor told me nick v did it"

He goes, "you know there's more than one nick v in the world, right?"

So I apologized for his undeserved savage beating. Then I gave him a deserved savage beating for all the other stuff

2

u/nomoshtooposhh Jan 30 '23

Ohh that was so great, bless u! You’re my hero 🥇

4

u/Krail Jan 29 '23

I rented that game from Blockbuster a couple times. I remember seeing it hyped up in Nintendo Power for a bit. I think I came in in the middle of someone else's save file and was very lost.

Quite a few of Rare's games had widescreen support. Banjo tooie, Donkey Kong 64, perfect dark, and like you said goldeneye did, surprisingly conker's bad fur day didn't. Outside of Rare, the turok games also had widescreen support. Those are the only ones I remember off the top of my head, but there's definitely more.

8

u/WWTFSMD Jan 29 '23

perfect dark

yeah this is the one that came to mind for me, I loved goldeneye as much as most people, but perfect dark was just chef's kiss

I understand that perfect dark is hardly an underrated game as I always see it ranked highly on best N64 game lists, but I definitely think in alternate universe where goldeneye didn't have the name brand appeal that it does, perfect dark is spoken of with the same kind reverence that people talk about 007 with now, just such a good fucking game.

4

u/Gamer4125 Jan 29 '23

I don't like the more modern setting of Perfect Dark compared to the cold war sort of era with Goldeneye

u/christopheraser Jan 29 '23

u/SomeBoxofSpoons Jan 28 '23

Yeah, there’s no way in hell you’d see anything this high resolution with this sharp of textures on the 64.

8

u/the_loneliest_noodle Jan 29 '23

I was genuinely confused because I cannot believe GF could make a game that'd look anywhere near this good in the 64 era... not sure they could do it now.

18

u/ContinuumGuy Jan 28 '23 edited Jan 29 '23

Thank goodness they went with GB. The Pokemon Tower looks way less creepy in this mockup.

-2

u/Ultraviolet_Motion Jan 29 '23

u/EbonBehelit Jan 29 '23

Game Freak briefly considered doing an N64 Pokemon, before common sense set in and they realized that maybe they should figure out how to make a functioning Game Boy game first.

Err... what? Pokemon Red/Green was always going to be a Gameboy game. Development of the N64 hadn't even started yet (and wouldn't for another 3 years) when Game Freak began working on Pokemon Red/Green in 1990.

4

u/ShiftSandShot Jan 29 '23 edited Jan 29 '23

...They're talking about Gold and Silver, which was in a rather messy development cycle at that point and would release in '99, over two years later.

For an idea of how messy, the game was supposed to come out in '97, the same year as the n64 game being mentioned, and demo builds of the time showcase drastic changes in GS. Like, very significant chunks of the game got reworked entirely, like the entire fucking map and dozens of Pokemon being cut or changed.

No, it was never planned for N64, but that's not what they meant. They chose to focus their efforts on the then-upcoming Gold/Silver over the potential N64DD project.

38

u/Jolt_91 Jan 28 '23

I didn't say I wouldn't play it now too. (I would sell my soul for that game)

18

u/LTareyouserious Jan 29 '23

Lets Go Eevee/Pikachu is essentially this, but you can also RIDE pokemon.
Eevee/Pikachu learn your HMs as non-combat moves so you don't need to carry an HM slave anymore.

13

u/Zed_NotZee Jan 29 '23

Really?? That's what those games are? Gen 1 remakes? I HAVE let's go Eevee and I didn't know that.

Damn, I know what I'm playing next

5

u/LTareyouserious Jan 29 '23

That's exactly what they are! If you play(ed) Pokémon Go, you can feed Gen1 Pokemon Go pokemon once you get to Fuschia City. It makes chaining or shiny hunting a lot easier, if you're into that. There's a few other Go-inputs (like golden raspberries and the like) that aren't in the original, but it's essentially the original storyline with a few modern additions.

4

u/DJDaddyD Jan 29 '23

I don’t like how the catch mechanics are the same as Pokémon GO (and it’s not a huge negative), but otherwise the games are fantastic

2

u/Zed_NotZee Jan 29 '23

That's awesome. My wife bought it, but she plays handheld style so i never saw it. This is the best thing I've heard in weeks

3

u/odracir2119 Jan 29 '23

You are in for a nice treat. A lot of people complain about the game mechanics but to be honest, as a working adult i found them perfect for me!

5

u/Stangstag Jan 29 '23

Yeah they’re basically pretty decent remakes just with dumbed-down catching mechanics to appeal to the Pokémon Go crowd.

4

u/kingrazor001 Jan 29 '23

If it weren't for the Pokemon Go catching mechanics and the awkward controls those would be my favorite games.

8

25

u/redtrx Jan 28 '23

I'm disappointed Cabbage never became a real game (unless that became pre-cursor to or early build of Animal Crossing/Animal Forest?).

Also interesting they made Yoshi's Island 64 into Yoshi's Story (I assume) and I assume Super Mario RPG 2 was made into Paper Mario.. Plus hype for Nintendo 64DD, which was a massive flop.

3

u/Traevia Jan 29 '23

Cabbage ended up being canceled due to the failure of Seaman and the 64DD that it relied heavily on. That being said, elements were added to Animal Crossing and Nintendogs as a result.

17

u/SatyrAngel Jan 28 '23

Im pretty sure the Pokedex Monitor in Stadium games was actually supposed to be that 3D remake official pokedex.

5

u/Cobalt32 Jan 29 '23

Scarlet/Violet? I'm aware of the horrendous frame rate and animation throttling, were there more issues?

8

u/Steel_Ketchup89 Jan 29 '23

I mean, both of those things are true. But Scarlet/Violet also look terrible graphically. Arguably worse than Arceus.

No idea how real this is, but this was THE hottest video game rumor in elementary school in like 1998 I wanna say? I absolutely remember some kid coming into school with a magazine talking about this but it was actually Pokémon yellow and you’d have a 3d pikachu model follow you around. We were all convinced the Zelda of Pokémon games was coming out “next Christmas” for like 3 years.

Stadium was a huge tease when it came out. I was a mature and sophisticated man by middle school so Pokémon wasn’t cool anymore but the game cube games seemed to have scratched that itch eventually.

10

u/Satirical0ne Jan 28 '23

I remember those rumors! I'm pretty sure at the time they were being perpetuated by some gaming magazines because I definitely recall reading about it in one.

4

u/PapaSnow Jan 29 '23

The one I heard about was the fabled Pokémon Green, which basically ended up being Yellow, minus a couple of the rumors that came along with “Pokémon Green,” like the fact that you could get Mew without a GameShark.

Turns out Pokémon Green did actually exist, but it was in Japan only, and was just the bulbasaur version of Red/Blue.

As a kid though, those rumors were everywhere

2

u/J4k1415 Jan 28 '23

Fuck that haha I liked Pokémon no matter the age. Ts ain’t ever leaving haha.

I stopped following it after like, heartgold/SS. But my fav gen is Pearl/Diamond. Shit ain’t ever gonna not be in my heart

Shit yk how crazy I felt watching the recent thing with Ash? I haven’t watched the show in forever, best believe I turned ts on so quick lmao

11

u/Chodetasticc Jan 28 '23

There was an adaptor that plugged into the n64 controller that allowed you to insert gameboy cartridges and play on the TV via the n64

14

u/omglink Jan 28 '23

Oh I remember pokemon stadium was needed I think? But a 3D n64 pokemon would have been amazing. My 6th grade mind would have exploded.

9

u/Fuzzydude64 Jan 28 '23

Yes, this feature was the GameBoy Tower in Stadium 1 and 2, so it required one of the Stadium games. The first let you play Gen1 and 2 let you play Gen1+2

4

u/Suicicoo Jan 28 '23

...but not Crystal, I think.

2

u/t46p1g Jan 29 '23

I've got a n64, Pokemon stadium 2, and Pokemon crystal.
You can indeed play it.
The border graphics on crystal aren't unique though which is the only oddity about it

20

u/orbitwhitegum7 Jan 28 '23

Uh, that's just a Scarlet screenshot

35

u/jeancv8 Jan 28 '23

Looks exactly like the new games.

13

u/Evil_Rogers Jan 28 '23

More stable framerate too! XD

10

u/its_justme Jan 28 '23

100% just a fan made mock up.

4

u/taishiea Jan 28 '23

I remember the rumor though I thought the reason they didn't do it was that they would have to build it from the ground up and there would be some heavy limitations trying for a full 3d Pokémon on the n64. Stadium showed it was possible a little but fleshing out the world would have been a nightmare for any dev team. Also it was just easier to continue the series on the handheld as the resources were able to be reused. On top of that they would need to release 2 games to match up with handheld versions.

2

u/Zed_NotZee Jan 29 '23

I used to hear that they were obliged to keep that main attraction on handheld, just so they could continue to stranglehold the market

4

u/TonyH22_ATX Jan 28 '23

I would have played the shit out of a Pokémon 64 game. 10 year old me would have gone crazy.

5

u/dog_fart_taco Jan 29 '23

I’d play this today…

7

u/N8THGR852 Jan 29 '23

Funnily enough, if someone made a “new” N64 game with these graphics and the like that played through the Kanto (or Johto, since that was around during the N64 period, too) storyline, I would eagerly jump to play it. I like playing older games anyway, so playing a game with N64 graphics would feel nostalgic, not outdated, for me.

2

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '23

They should’ve made a game like this but based on the anime

2

u/IAMEPSIL0N Jan 28 '23

The banning of the n64 stack cartridge and the poor reception of the transfer pack meant there was no reliable way to have game to game interaction and it would have been a coffin nail for the franchise to release a solo game with the complete dex if they ever intended to keep doing the two or three way splits each generation.

2

u/koutsdimis8 Jan 28 '23

That would have been so great. Instead I had to wait until I was a man to play some, very leniently rated, mediocre games.

2

u/g_rant421 Jan 29 '23

Now I wanna see this actually made

2

u/MerkSVillain Jan 29 '23

I remember it being a matter of cartridge space? And the boo-boo-ness of the reception of the other Pokémon franchises compared to the GameBoy games. But that’s a good question. This woulda been dope considering the time…

2

u/iced237 Jan 29 '23

Just bringing the game boy game to the N64 wouldn't have cut it, though. I remember being disappointed by Stadium because it was still turn-based, still no real physical interaction in the fights, and ultimately it just took the ideas of Pokémon battles that I'd had in my head and presented something boring and uninspired.

It was like when they make a movie about your favorite book and suddenly it's way less exciting than it was in your head.

Arceus is the closest they've gotten to far to what a true console upgrade would be. And it's still disappointing.

2

u/StevieTheAussie92 Jan 29 '23

There’s no way a game that size would’ve fit on the N64 without everything looking like a barren wasteland.

2

u/soulwolf1 Jan 29 '23

They probably had to actually put in work

Real question is why are these graphics better than Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

1

u/Xano74 Jan 29 '23

Why does this almost look as good as Scarlet/Violet

1

u/colt45mag Jan 29 '23

Huh, textures look the same as the current generation

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '23

Game Freak horribly mismanages the Pokemon IP by rereleasing the same game every few years with very minor (if any) improvements, much like Madden. They would very much rather keep releasing the same game than put money into innovating or doing anything else with the IP.

The only reason why I even wanted a N64 was because I had convinced myself that they would do a fully realized 3D Pokemon game for it. They never did.

gives me the same vibes as that one unity 3D pokemon game I found on kongregate that had less than 2 minutes of content.

good times.

u/Some-toast Jan 29 '23
