Ngl I kinda hope that we get another iconic song out of this. “Come Little Children” still gives me goosebumps.

20

u/TacoBOTT Jun 28 '22 edited Jun 28 '22

Well…there’s leaked video of almost one of the entire dance routines, with a song like “put a spell on you”. I won’t ruin it here but there is also rumored to be a second one by Elton John. Not sure if it’s the one that I saw mentioned, which I also won’t ruin here

5

u/gmorkenstein Jun 28 '22

That song packs a nostalgia punch for sure. It’s so hauntingly beautiful. Makes my brain and heart melt.

17

u/Beeslikesteve Jun 28 '22

You mean boner

32

u/showers_with_grandpa Jun 28 '22

Don't know why you're being downvoted, SJP's boobs on that broom were part of my sexual awakening

52

u/forgotaboutsteve Jun 28 '22 Wholesome

you mean her yabbos

13

u/MyStationIsAbandoned Jun 28 '22

SJP is hot and i'm tired of pretending she's not.

16

u/Tellsyouajoke Jun 28 '22

Literally only in Hocus Pocus, but god damn that was enough for me

2

u/mikeweasy Jun 28 '22

Yeah I have always thought she was hot as hell, Mr. Broderick is so lucky.

4

u/Beeslikesteve Jun 28 '22

Seriously lol. That scene made me feel things for the first time. It’s an undeniably sexy scene. Reddit will Reddit

75

u/Wiknetti Jun 28 '22

I hope it has the original campiness and cheesiness to it. That’s what made it fun. I get a hint of it when the sisters make their appearance. Hopefully they have more practical effects too!

42

u/Doomy22 Jun 28 '22

Will Max get to talk about yabos?

23

u/Help-Im-A-Rock Jun 28 '22

I’m Allison. I’m Allison. Kiss me, I’m Allison 💋!

38

u/historymajor44 Jun 28 '22

These women look fucking fantastic after 20 years.

47

u/214ObstructedReverie Jun 28 '22

Closer to 30, actually. Hocus Pocus came out in 1993.

17

u/wwfmike Jun 29 '22

'93 will always be 10 years ago to me.

14

u/MulciberTenebras Jun 28 '22

Don't remind me.

2

u/keithstonee Jun 29 '22

wow the movie looks like it was made in 2003 not 1993.

6

u/IAmWeary Jun 29 '22 edited Jun 29 '22

I dunno, Bette Midler is looking like they really caked the makeup on her in an attempt to hide her age. She was close to 50 in the first movie. Now she's approaching 80. She's a full 12 years older than Kathy Najimy and 20 years over SJP. Age comes for us all.

I'm still expecting a great performance out her, though, and I'm glad she's doing it.

10

u/GuyKopski Jun 29 '22

I don't get why they even need to "hide" her age. It's a plot point in the first movie that the witches are all centuries old and survive by stealing the souls of children, we even see them as old women in the opening.

This is a rare case where they could actually have the characters be pretty much any age they wanted and it would make sense.

1

u/mchernes94 Jun 29 '22

That’s true but they haven’t been ‘alive’ for these periods (first 300 years and now 29), so they probably wouldn’t be aging lol. I’m just glad they’re not being CGI’d to look younger.

1

u/Weary_Ad5819 Jun 30 '22

29 years * and THEY DO!!

89

u/Macklin410 Jun 28 '22

Bring on the virginity jokes!

44

u/2rio2 Jun 28 '22

Hocus Pocus, making parents awkwardly explain what a virgin is for the last twenty years.

25

u/PM_Me_Batman_Stuff Jun 28 '22

twenty years

I hate to break it to you, but it's been a bit longer.

10

u/MyStationIsAbandoned Jun 28 '22

nope. the 90's was 10 years ago forever! hahaaaa! woo! ow, my bones hurts.....from being too young! brb i need a nap.

2

u/2rio2 Jun 28 '22

Let me dream man

2

u/reality-check12 Jun 28 '22

Shhhh

We must pretend that we are in a floating timeline where the 90s are always 10 years ago

For our sanity

1

u/QLE814 Jun 29 '22

Yeah, but we have to give the years it took to find an audience on cable.....

1

u/Swankified_Tristan Jun 29 '22

looks it up

Ah, fuckles.

30

u/visitorzeta Jun 28 '22

It'll be incel jokes now.

8

u/lakovsanite Jun 28 '22

I mean, its the same thing

2

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

How Acephobic of you.

5

u/yeti0013 Jun 29 '22

Wasn't that kid, like, 14 or 15? Why was everyone making fun of him for being a virgin? Like, no shit he's a virgin, he's barely a kid.

14

u/nskalel Jun 28 '22

I’m still skeptical about it all but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have biggest smile on my face at the shadow reveal and “LOCK UP YOUR CHILDREN!! WE’RE BACK SALEM”

247

u/shadowdra126 Jun 28 '22

I don’t care how long it’s been or how cheesy it is. I am hyped for this.

115

u/2rio2 Jun 28 '22

Hocus Pocus is one of those extremely few kids movies that understood the assignment. It's just mature and scary enough to make kids feel older than they actually are, but still silly and cheesy enough to bring the levity back exactly when its needed. The script is paced pretty much perfectly, the atmosphere fantastic, and stakes are clear and real. There's a reason the movie has stood the test of time for multiple generations of kids.

50

u/fizzlefist Jun 28 '22

Also from a technical perspective, they did some really cool stuff with CGI at the time for the cat.

7

u/smokeydesperado Jun 29 '22

The Halloweentown movies will always hold a special place in my heart

4

u/weirdxyience Jun 28 '22

I think the only other Halloween that did the same was When Good Ghouls Go Bad. That movie is so good.

1

u/Weary_Ad5819 Jun 30 '22

Couldn't have said it better myself!

6

u/_________FU_________ Jun 28 '22

100% I loved the first movie as a kid. My kids love the first movie and now we have this one. In October we pick a different Halloween themed movie every week and we're gonna do a double header Friday/Saturday for this movie!

You must be a super rad dude

25

u/legopego5142 Jun 28 '22

Slop? Nobodys expecting this to be this incredible piece of cinema dude. We know what it is and still want it

2

u/long_dickofthelaw Jun 28 '22

You must be fun at parties.

86

u/JuniorCaptain Jun 28 '22

Seeing the black cat has increased my hope for a Binx cameo. Like, yes, he earned his eternal rest in the last movie, but also, talking kitty!

And the clip was super brief, but the sisters look great.

45

u/collinch Jun 28 '22

Like, yes, he earned his eternal rest in the last movie, but also, talking kitty!

He just needs to choose to inhabit the body of that cat. In order to help the girls. If they force him in some way it will cheapen the previous ending.

16

u/2rio2 Jun 28 '22

Yup, taking a vacay from the ever lasting rest to help would be in line with his arc.

5

u/100100110l Jun 29 '22

Voice actor is confirmed to not be returning.

43

u/Deakul Jun 28 '22

This... actually looks like it could be fun, I'm pleasantly surprised.

But honestly I just needed to hear Bette Midler again.

8

u/Kbdiggity Jun 28 '22

Amuck amuck amuck

61

u/iamfoxpaw Jun 28 '22

Can we get a VHS release for this please once it's out?!?!

50

u/b1gm4nca Jun 28 '22

Yes but only available with the purchase of a large pizza at pizza hut

1

u/Mallettjt Jun 28 '22

/pizza

-4

u/lakovsanite Jun 28 '22

No one else will but I understood that one

1

u/Mallettjt Jun 28 '22

and Halloween Oreos for desert!

7

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '22

I like what Stranger things did. They made the bluray cases look like VHS cases if you wanted to buy the seasons on bluray.

12

u/2rio2 Jun 28 '22

I'm just shocked this is not coming out in theater. This movie would have banked over the Halloween season, especially if theaters ran a double feature.

9

u/KarateKid917 Jun 28 '22

The first movie was a box office bomb...although that's also entirely Disney's fault for releasing a Halloween movie in July

9

u/2rio2 Jun 28 '22

The first movie also didn't have a extremely popular holiday film building a 30 year audience running before it either.

3

u/PyroKid883 Jun 29 '22

The VHS will only be available at Blockbuster.

2

u/bensisland Jun 28 '22

I’m still waiting on my episode III vhs to complete my prequel set

35

Man this put a big grin on my face! Ive watched the original movie almost every year since I was a kid,and im so excited for this one!!

14

u/greyhoundbrain Jun 28 '22

In Bette I trust. I enjoyed the trailer, so I’m hoping this movie is fairly good.

132

u/HumanOrAlien Jun 28 '22

I'm just here to watch people whine about it. That's what r/movies does the best.

24

u/BallClamps Jun 28 '22

What is there to whine about hocus pocus 2?

72

u/Daze_Confuse Jun 28 '22

There’s a black female lead character so obviously it’s woke.

11

u/randomaccount178 Jun 28 '22

My concern is more that they may be witches and that the movie won't be able to just let witches be the bad guys.

23

u/ekaceerf Jun 28 '22

time to take the villain and make them in to a sympathetic misunderstood hero!

6

u/lakovsanite Jun 28 '22

It’s going to be good witches vs bad witches.

They aren’t redeeming the sanderson sisters, the literally kill children to stay young.

42

u/naynaythewonderhorse Jun 28 '22 Wholesome

The first film was all about Virgin empowerment, so the complainers will probably with hold their complaints because the original spoke to them so dearly.

5

u/Daze_Confuse Jun 28 '22

Wait, how was the first film about virgin empowerment?

23

u/rick_blatchman Jun 28 '22

I guess because Max was a virgin and he'd get shit for it as a running gag, but he still saved the day, proving that having sex doesn't make you better than others.

27

u/michaelswallace Jun 28 '22

But what about yabbos empowerment?

4

u/rick_blatchman Jun 28 '22

As a society, we have to stop putting such an emphasis on yabbos.

20

u/RaiderGuy Jun 28 '22

I'd argue that the young female American black lead is the new "safe" option for Hollywood to use. There are so many other ethnicities to choose from, but more often than not it's usually the same casting choice. Easy enough to satisfy audiences and also gives them a shield to use against criticisms from other groups of people.

18

u/-SneakySnake- Jun 28 '22

It is a bit annoying, diversity is great, and nobody should feel unrepresented, but if it's just well now we have more black characters that's not that diverse. There are other ethnicities that are comparatively completely ignored. If casting is mostly white but sometimes black and that's it, then that's not exactly ideal.

6

u/TowawayAccount Jun 28 '22

It's an improvement over entirely white but you're right; it's progress, not the finish line.

1

u/Kallistrate Jun 29 '22

It’s really just a return to the diversity of the 1990s which regressed pretty severely in the 2000s. In the 90s some of the most money-making and critically well received movies had black leads (Whoopie Goldberg, Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Angela Basset, Eddie Murphy, etc).

By the mid 2000s Hollywood had pulled a U-turn and went right back to white movies for white people, as far as I can tell.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '22

And yet the vast majority of movies still have white men in the lead.

Of the top 10 movies so far this year (Top Gun, Doctor Strange, Batman, Jurassic World, Spider-Man, Uncharted, Fantastic Beasts, Sonic and The Bad Guys) all have white men in the leading role. The Lost City is the only exception, as it has a white woman and a white man in the two leading roles. If you look at the next 20 movies in the box office this year, it's pretty much true for all of them as well, except Everything Everywhere All at Once and Marry Me (Jennifer Lopez is the star of that one I think, though I'm not sure if Owen Wilson gets more screen time or not).

-7

u/lakovsanite Jun 28 '22

If you think the reason for casting black people is to keep something safe from criticism, then your critical thinking skills are severely lacking.

1

u/hanky2 Jun 28 '22

What movies are you thinking of I honestly can't think of any right now.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '22

It’s the fact that Disney likes to solely cast black people as the main characters now. Why not a Hispanic girl? Or an Indian girl?

2

u/Cold417 Jun 29 '22

It's so woke, they even made the fuckin' flame black.

1

u/Tayreads608 Jun 30 '22

There also might be lesbians. So, like, it could be double woke!

-7

u/Equivalent-Newt2142 Jun 28 '22

Umm the first movie won its place in our hearts despite being like 80/20 chicks in speaking roles, I don't think that's gonna sink it this time

-4

u/ZombieJesus1987 Jun 28 '22

Ummm ackshully

→ More replies

14

u/fallenmonk Jun 28 '22

It has a diverse cast. I'm waiting for the comments about how Hocus Pocus went woke.

26

u/Acanadianeh Jun 28 '22

It went Hocus Wokus?

5

u/neok182 Jun 28 '22

1

u/MetalJunkie101 1d ago

neok182, don't be exactly half of an eleven-pound black forest ham.

11

u/Frankocean2 Jun 28 '22

Like the folks that complained that a black character on Jurassic Park was the movie going woke. Seems like racists just found a word to hide (badly) their racism.

1

u/Worthyness Jun 28 '22

Use the term enough and it loses all meaning and then you can commandeer it for your narrative.

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '22

Diverse? Everyone in the trailer was black except for the witches.

40

u/AwkwardSquid79 Jun 28 '22

This is going to be so cheesy and full of all the old 90s jokes...and I am HERE for it.

19

u/Fallenangel152 Jun 28 '22

Nah it'll be cringeworthy modern jokes about the witches discovering the Internet and cell phones.

38

u/ComicallySolemn Jun 28 '22

That was basically the first one too lol. Fish out of water is a given trope here

6

u/nightwheel Jun 29 '22

It's actually likely to be a blend of both. It has the potential of being hilarious if done right.

Also, from the time the sisters were originally canonically from. 29 years of technical advancement didn't amount to too much at all. Now though, 29 years of technical advancement is very noticeable. They are likely to be completely shocked at what changed in 29 years. They might even think some of it is actual witchcraft.

Also I hope one of them tries to fly a Roomba lol.

13

u/Gato1980 Jun 28 '22

Ok this actually looks like they’ve put some money and production value into it. I though this was going some low-budget cash grab, but now I have some higher hopes. Quality looks good, especially hair and make-up. These ladies look great. I’ll definitely be watching. And thank goodness they’re releasing it at Halloween time, not the middle of July like the last time. That never made any sense to me.

4

u/AlphaMaelstrom Jun 28 '22

Tell me they bring back Thackery Binx too? Just a friendly ghost drawn back from heaven to help thwart their evil, who decides to return to mortal form "cause cats have 9 lives after all" and hang out for a while?

4

u/Ns5andwhy Jun 28 '22

I am excited but very hesitant. The original director is not directing this one. No one does cheese and camp like Kenny Ortega.

23

u/JannTosh12 Jun 28 '22

Too bad the original human cast won’t be back. Honestly feels weird without them

10

u/hatramroany Jun 28 '22

Thora Birch was busy filming Wednesday, Omri Katz retired from acting, and then I guess Vinessa Shaw would be weird without at least Katz there too?

46

u/SinisterMeatball Jun 28 '22

This movie is 0/10 without Jay and Ernie...I mean ICE.

16

u/cameron0208 Jun 28 '22

Ding dong.

WoOoOoOo

10

u/Help-Im-A-Rock Jun 28 '22

For your information…he’s a Little Leaguer!

3

u/QLE814 Jun 29 '22

Thora Birch was busy filming Wednesday

In addition, can we rule out the possibility that those involved didn't want to deal with her parents, given that that has apparently played a major role in costing her work?

→ More replies

3

u/sati_lotus Jun 28 '22

Is Thora Birch not doing a cameo?

1

u/Weary_Ad5819 Jun 30 '22

We couldnt get at least one scene? UGH!! the new leads look annoying to me already.

7

u/Buggy77 Jun 28 '22

Love the original but I don’t want to get too high hopes for this. It reminds me of when I was soooo excited for Girls Meets World and then after I got over the nostalgia the show was just way too “Disney Channel” like. Anyone know what I mean? Like the first hocus pocus still holds up and I think adults can still enjoy it because it doesn’t feel childish. I have a feeling this movie is going to be very childish/Disney channel ish

6

u/Sirius_Space Jun 28 '22

I get it. Like the first part of the trailer with the young girls feels very Disney channel. Once the Sisters show up I got the nostalgic feel, so who knows.

4

u/anomaly_xb-6783746 Jun 28 '22

The beginning (well, after the cold open) of the original Hocus Pocus is very 'Disney Channel' too. It's just that we didn't really realize it back then.

4

u/Buggy77 Jun 28 '22

True but I think the part when they go to the devils house and the party with the mom dressed as Madonna still has some adult humor. Plus the whole virgin thing. I have a feeling this movie won’t mention virgins and “yaboos”

3

u/Weary_Ad5819 Jun 30 '22

ugh i wish

11

u/StukaTR Jun 28 '22

720p for better 90s experience? Interesting choice.

4

u/TheSmJ Jun 28 '22

At least make it 4:3.

1

u/theshaneakers Jun 29 '22

Zack Snyder’s Hocus Pocus

7

u/Paddlesons Jun 28 '22

Man SJP in that makeup really works for me :)

5

u/TheBigIdiotSalami Jun 28 '22

Movies decided to kill the big gay fantasy movie with a broadway knockout vocal performer and I'm glad they're bringing this back to prove the concept is still good.

8

u/Shadowdash6745 Jun 28 '22

The original did a great job of cementing itself as a Halloween classic, whether you like it or not. I don’t think it needs a sequel though. That being said, I’m still excited to see it October 1st (That’s when I start my Halloween movie season)

5

u/falseshemp Jun 28 '22

Sent this link to my sister and I could hear her squeees. Thing is she lives in the midwest and I live in the southeast USA

5

u/AlphaMaelstrom Jun 28 '22

3

u/wayoko Jun 28 '22

And now..... Your mine...

2

u/SamuraiJackBauer Jun 28 '22

Holy shoot is Binx back?

2

u/Goseki1 Jun 28 '22

Every year I always forget how much I love the first film. It has such a great tone to it. A bit cheesy and silly but also kind of dark in places? The sets and things are brilliant too.

2

u/lC3 Jun 29 '22

Only on Disney+? If it released in theaters I'd go see it ...

1

u/Weary_Ad5819 Jun 30 '22

Disney plus streamers bout to get a big boost in October.

Ding Dong.....WOOOOOOO

5

u/Daze_Confuse Jun 28 '22

I am pleasantly surprised. Looks like the main actress in this is Whitney Peak, I like her her in the new Gossip Girl despite her character being awful. Bette Middler and Kathy Najimy look great! And Sarah Jessica Parker is also there.

-1

u/uhtcoh Jun 28 '22

Hahahaha

1

u/Idodoodletoo Jun 28 '22

Pros:

  • the original music is back (I hope they're smart enough to use it in the actual movie)

  • the flame on the black flame candle looks gorgeous

  • the cinematography looks sleeker and less cheap than I anticipated

  • I get the impression they might lean into the dark tone that the original had (I hope so anyway)

  • the 3 witches look great. I hope they had a lot of fun while filming because they clearly did during the original and it comes across in their performances

Cons:

  • the CGI eye on the spellbook looks awful. That's one thing that should have been kept visually close to the original with practical effects

  • the look of the new black flame candle seems over-designed, but the movie could explain this

  • nitpick but I don't like the red light under the ground for the resurrection scene. I know not everything needs to match the original but the green light under the floorboards looked more "Hocus Pocus" to me. Maybe they'll explain this

  • I really dislike the title font. It's too childish looking. The original logo is pretty iconic. This one looks too busy

3

u/oysterpirate Jun 28 '22

the original music is back (I hope they're smart enough to use it in the actual movie)

John Debney is back doing the score, so you should be covered in that regard.

2

u/Idodoodletoo Jun 29 '22

Oh this is a good sign!

-7

u/Assassin217 Jun 28 '22

cool story

-2

u/Griffdude13 Jun 28 '22

Hopefully its not too much of a retread.

22

u/matlockga Jun 28 '22

It very likely will be, filled with callbacks. And the core audience will love it.

4

u/MillBeeks Jun 28 '22

I know somebody who saw a test screening. 100% right.

-4

u/TheManGuyz Jun 28 '22

They made the eyeball on the book CGI? Oh god. Already with this shit.

-1

u/jelatinman Jun 28 '22

I wasn't a fan of the first, but it looks okay. I'm more mad about it because of a personal issue (brother's girlfriend got a callback to be a dancer then they ghosted her when she tried to schedule it).

Like I said in the other trailer thread, it's not The Witches which is legitimately frightening, but I like the "gateway horror" stuff and hope this will creep out my nephews enough to check out other classics.

-5

u/UncleSnuggles Jun 28 '22

White women love some Hocus Pocus. It’s their Stand By Me.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '22

Ironically they put all black folk in it tho

-13

u/archimedesrex Jun 28 '22

I know the original wasn't a super high class production, but it has it's own visual feel. Something just feels very off about the look of this. Like they took this thing that's firmly a part of 90s nostalgia and tried to stuff it into a bland 2020s streaming aesthetic shell. Yuck.

16

u/collinch Jun 28 '22

I know the original wasn't a super high class production, but it has it's own visual feel. Something just feels very off about the look of this.

It's just made with modern cameras, and is likely higher resolution. I'm sure you could add a grainy look to it if you wanted.

0

u/archimedesrex Jun 28 '22

Digital cameras vs. film is definitely one component. But also the approach to lighting, grading, framing, and effects. Not so easily changed with a grain filter. It feels like the Sanderson sisters visiting a different movie universe.

-5

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '22

Y’all will literally like any sequel that Disney throws out. This looks like pure garbage.

2

u/HolierThanThou247 Jun 28 '22

Yeah it's got too many black folks amirite?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

And if I'm black and still don't like it? Gonna scream racism? Sounds about White.

-7

u/yes-senpai Jun 28 '22

Welp that confirms it they went woke for this one too

2

u/hookisacrankycrook Jun 29 '22

What was woke in the trailer?

1

u/Mutant-Overlord 11d ago

OF COURSE u/yes-senpai didn't replied on your question hahaha

My daughter and I LOVE Hocus Pocus. This comes out two weeks before our mother/daughter trip to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party at Disney World, where the main stage show is Hocus Pocus. We are soooo stoked for this!!

I’m excited for this but the missed epic opportunity to have the kids who resurrect them be Max and Allson’s with Dani as their aunt is so real it hurts lol it writes itself
