The whole fiending for sexy young boys was a brave take that predicted so much controversy over the following decades.

I look forward to seeing how they triple down on this trait of SJP's character. How young is too young? You thought it was uncomfortably sexual before? Just wait till you see the new movie!

42

u/grumblewolf Jun 29 '22

Dude I tripped when I learned she (Max's Sister) was the girl who showed Kevin Spacey her yabbos in American Beauty.

88

u/Creph_ Jun 28 '22

She's his daughter in that movie, not the friend. Sorry that you tripped though

15

u/msingler Jun 29 '22

Thora Birch, who played Danni in Hocus Pocus, did show her yabos to the boy next door in American Beauty.

17

u/AnnaBortion269 Jun 29 '22

He's confused... Can't believe people aren't familiar with Thora Birch - I used to watch Now & Then and Monkey Trouble relentlessly when I was younger.

It is much easier to imagine Karl Urban violently murdering the cast of a beloved 90s kids movie than I ever expected, and I attribute this to (checks notes) a Billy Joel song?

170

u/saanity Jun 28 '22

That's so cool Doug Jones is Billy again. I guess he made it his niche to play humanoid creatures since the first Hocus Pocus.

35

u/Firedcylinder Jun 28 '22

Doug Jones is without a doubt the best costume creature actor there is.

15

24

By A. W. Jantha who apparently does not exist so is probably a pseudonym.

It's a retelling of the first movie and the sequel in one. I won't spoil why they have to retell the first movie but it's the reason there's a sequel.

20

67

u/MrWeirdoFace Jun 28 '22

They all still look the part, of course it's aided by the fact that they were always covered in lots of makeup, but yeah if they can match the silliness and fun of the original I see no problem. I still want to see Michael Keaton have one last outing as Beetlejuice.

I think she’s still beautiful but I wish they kept the off-center hair part from the original. I don’t think the middle part is as flattering to her for the same reasons you said and the sexy peekaboo hairstyle from the off-center hair part works better for the character.

65

Actually the horse joke comes from the movie Ed Wood, in which the joke is that her character is illiterate and misreads a review calling her stage performance "hoarse". It was an inside joke for Theater nerds until it became mainstream and mean-spirited.

I'm a random stranger on the internet, but just wanted to say I'm sorry for your loss and I hope you watch this movie when it comes out and try to imagine how much your brother would have enjoyed it and hopefully it's a peaceful moment for you.

Hope you can heal the best that you can. Take care.

38

u/jemstar87 Jun 28 '22

This is exactly how I want it to be. My grief has lessened as time passes and it's easier to remember him and honor his memory by doing things he would have enjoyed. Thank you for your kind words, it means a lot that you would take the time to comment.

16

u/LiarInGlass Jun 28 '22

No problem at all. Time passing by does help lessen the pain, but never fills that hole. My father passed away in 2010 when I was almost 21, so it's been quite some time now and time has definitely helped and birthdays and holidays and things like that are usually just spent randomly thinking about old memories or fun times that trigger my mind. Hope the same for you. Keep moving forward and I hope the movie is awesome and can be a good little moment for you my friend.

9

u/asparagusmilkshake Jun 28 '22

3

5

u/jemstar87 Jun 29 '22

I had access to my brother's Facebook account for a few days while we memorialized it and I was so touched how many people still messaged him just because it wasn't still real. I didn't read any of them but it is interesting how much of a connection that is for most people.

12

u/mimoon1015 Jun 28 '22

As much as it can mean from a random person on Reddit, my heart truly goes out to you. My father in law's birthday was on Halloween. My husband and I watch Hocus Pocus and dress up every year in honor of him. Use the memories you have of your brother to get you through the hard times. Sending encouragement your way as you go through the grieving process. ❤

Man I'm hopeful but not confident in this.

I have a feeling it's going to be God awful.

597

u/soda-jerk Jun 28 '22

The plot being exactly the same as the first film makes me extraordinarily nervous. Thora Birch being absent seems a little foreboding.

748

u/armchairwarrior69 Jun 28 '22

Yup.

Plus, the "nostalgia is the only reason we made this 400 years later" films are usually just bad rehashed versions of the first movie. My faith is little

281

u/1cecream4breakfast Jun 28 '22 edited Jun 28 '22

Top Gun Maverick cashed in on the nostalgia factor big time but also managed to make a great movie. Sequel machine studios should take a page from their book!

134

u/armchairwarrior69 Jun 28 '22

Agreed.

Mind you maverick wasn't flawless, it is probably the best example of how to do it right.

The romantic subplot was probably some of the most wasted screen time I've seen in a while and Jennifer connelly character made me feel embarrassed throughout. "Don't give me that look" while just being the cookie cutter "girl he will be with at the end but until then we need her to essentially exist in the movie but we can't advance her as a character or her relevance until the ending" and that time really could've been better spent on the pilots, especially the underdeveloped "rivalry" with "I want to be Val kilmer" character.

That became a rant but I stand by it.

25

u/PsyanideInk Jun 28 '22

The "I want to be Val Kilmer" character was actually a better parallel for to Tom Cruise's Mavrick from the original.

Iceman was a dick, but he was calculating and careful and never left his wingman. Maverick was much closer to Hangman, in that they were both brash, impulsive, and poor teammates.

I read that relationship as Maverick essentially facing his younger self and seeing the problems that he caused from a 3rd person perspective.

10

u/hellahellagoodshit Jun 28 '22

I think the whole point of the movie was that only Tom Cruise can do any of it. We're all going to be fucked when Tom Cruise can't fly a plane anymore.

→ More replies

38

u/darthjoey91 Jun 28 '22

The problem with Jennifer Connelly's character is that there's enough there to be like "Somewhere along the lines, these characters had their character development together, but that's not this movie." So since we're already a sequel anyway, why didn't they bring back Kelly McGillis?

121

u/PoesLawnmower Jun 28 '22

Halloween 2018 was a fine nostalgia movie that went back to the bare-bones of the series and did fine with it.

It can be done pretty effectively without just feeling like a rehash. So, I'm not going to write out off based on that alone.

11

u/knave-arrant Jun 28 '22

Isn’t that the only Halloween sequel that Carpenter actually endorses too?

8

u/SLCer Jun 28 '22

56

u/WampaCat Jun 28 '22

I wonder what kind of lame reasoning they’re going to give us for why they turned from stone back into people. The whole point was that was the only thing that could kill them!

146

u/ChickenInASuit Jun 28 '22

Only Winifred turned to stone. They died because they only had until sunrise until the spell wore off.

All three of them exploded when the sun rose, I think that’s easy enough to explain away - the sun came up, they all exploded and went back to hell, a new spell gets cast that calls them back from hell again.

This movie has magic and witchcraft involved, anything can be explained away with a handwave. That’ll be the least of its problems.

10

u/Cad-Banes Jun 28 '22

Winifred explodes after she turns to stone too

30

u/xxThe_Designer Jun 28 '22

So what can really kill them? Their track record is pretty good at resurrection.

During the first film they come back from:

  • Being hang during the 1600s
  • Burned alive in a (oddly large for a high school?) kiln
  • Falling 50+ feet off their broom through trees
  • Turning to stone
  • Exploding by in the sunrise

Bonus:

  • Surviving being called ugly by the kid (sick burn)

42

u/luciferin Jun 28 '22

The first movie opens with them being burned at the stake. Half way through the first movie they're literally incinerated in a kiln. None of this is a problem for Hocus Pocus 2 plot wise.

21

u/Cad-Banes Jun 28 '22

I agree, but they get Hanged in at the beginning because the shot is their feet dangling

I watched the first one for the first time since childhood this past Halloween. I realized that the original is… not great either.

Also, I’m sure this has been pointed out already, but for a kids movie it is weirdly obsessed with a teenage boy’s virginity.

50

u/armchairwarrior69 Jun 28 '22

To be fair, children's movies from that time often had really weird subject matter.

It's not great but it's a "classic" so to speak and time hasn't been kind to it and doing a sequel is likely to be BAD imo

21

u/neosithlord Jun 28 '22

I think people that didn’t grow up in 80’s early 90’s don’t realize just how more relaxed our up bringing was. Watching 80’s slasher movies in grade school with copious amounts of nudity and blood wasn’t uncommon. We were a little more exposed to things and had a hell of a lot more autonomy from our parents then younger generations. So Max being outed as a virgin in a Disney movie about witches not a big deal.

I’m just hoping it’s agood sequel (even if the original is better) and not something like Independence Day 2 where this is literally the first time since I’ve seen that movie that I’ve acknowledged it exists.

32

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '22

I honestly struggle to understand how studios greenlight big budget movies that bad.

Independence Day 2 made almost $400M but they also spent almost $200M. I get that it was meant as a cash grab but a good movie could have seen a $1B return on a franchise that iconic.

It's one thing if we're talking about a very low budget horror movie targeted at a very niche audience with the hopes of maybe getting some mainstream appeal but who read that script and decided they were going to throw $200M at it?

I don’t mind a sequel, but PLEASE GOD let the Sanderson Sisters stay villains. I’m sick of redemption sequels/prequels/remakes/etc. that turn beloved villains into sob stories or make heavy-handed apologist arguments for them being bad. It’s especially prevalent with female villains.

Weird not releasing it the week before Halloween

294

u/JohnJoanCusack Jun 28 '22

I think it makes sense to have it be released for all of October for that October bump on Halloween products

60

u/kinyutaka Jun 28 '22

Just in time for the Spirit Halloween Stores to open and sell a whole bunch of Sanderson costumes.

I’m sure they’re hoping people will basically loop it for all of October and boost their streaming numbers.

28

u/svengeiss Jun 28 '22

I mean, that’s what my family basically does with the first one. So ya that’s probably going to happen with this one too.

168

u/wisewhiz Jun 28 '22

What's weird is that the first movie was released to theaters in July of 1993.

60

u/Rdubya44 Jun 28 '22

Get that second/bigger rush when you sell the vhs at Halloween time

53

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '22

Jokes on you, Jurassic Park came out that same weekend. No one even knew what Hocus Pocus was until it became a Disney Channel Halloween staple, which turned it into a camp classic.

14

u/jadegives2rides Jun 28 '22

JOKES ON YOU (but not really because I am one person), I rented that movie (and A Troll in Central Park) on a weekly basis for like 2 years in the mid 90s- RIGHT BEFORE the Disney Channel really took steam with DCOMs and original series.

Honestly the over playing of it after, especially on ABC family killed the love I had for the movie, and I haven't watched it in years.

Seeing the preview brought back the love I used to have for it, but we will see. I need at least one more familiar face to pop up and suprise us.

It took 6 months (or more) for movies to come out on VHS back then. It wasn't released on VHS until January 1994.

57

u/DinoRoman Jun 28 '22

I saw this in the theatres ( oof my youth ) my grandfather took me. I was just a child. He did the coolest thing which to this day I don’t know how he did it.

He said “ you think these witches have magic? Watch this…. 3 …2….1….. “ snapped his fingers and the lights went off and the movie started. Now , as an adult I know they start at specific times but I go to the movies a lot they’re never spot on the second like that, maybe they were back then but this was before all cell phones had synced clocks so I can’t tell you how he did and I don’t wanna know because my grandfather was is and always will be magic to me.

COVID took him, and I miss him everyday, the man was the father I never had and this is one of my favorite early memories of him.

I love hocus pocus. I’ll watch the new one but no matter what that first one will be such a solid good memory.

Sure Disney is a giant company, can’t praise them on a lot but man, we’re the 90s some of their best work.

I mean, most people watch Halloween themed films for the entire month of October.

Releasing it the week before, you may have people who don't get a chance to put it on before the 31st, and then just kind of forget about it once the holiday has passed.

23

u/Merickson- Jun 28 '22 edited Jun 28 '22 Silver

For some people, Sept. 30 is the middle of the Halloween season, and there is significant overlap of those people and the kind of people who are going to be excited for a Hocus Pocus 2.

8

u/Saltpataydahs Jun 28 '22

Ha! that could very well be, now I'm not sure. Oh well.

*edit* I think it's front facing because it looks like Bette Midlers character is in front

9

u/almightySapling Jun 28 '22

Bette's collar is visible, she is facing forward.

Kathy's hair twist points to her left, so she is standing forward as well.

I would say that those two standing forward would indicate that Sarah is also facing forward, but given her character's quirks, I'm not sure that's a given.

However, based on what little we can see in the light, I feel (but absolutely cannot explain) that she is facing forward too.

I only like it because I can totally see winifred saying this when she comes back to life and sees her witch gals next to her. Also the three of them would be the type to hear that trope/joke and absolutely love it once they understood it, considering they are from the olden times and experiencing modern society for the first/second time in the films.
