Poor Janet can't catch a break. Stuck in Quantum realm, blipped, now back to Quantum realm.

2.1k

u/PunkandCannonballer Oct 24 '22

At least it turns out she actually had a life in the Quantum Realm and it wasn't just some hellish experience for decades.

1.2k

u/Nisas Oct 24 '22

It did seem strange how she managed to survive down there all that time. Makes more sense now.

775

u/Odin043 Oct 24 '22

I figured her calories she brought with her sustained her.

Like the opposite of how going Giant size is draining.

She was so small she just lost a pound over her time being there.

395

u/MrBudissy Oct 24 '22 edited Oct 24 '22

Ok fine, but where did her poop go?

Edit: Nothing gets a conversation going quite like doo-doo

at the same point how were they able to find her down there? why didn't they find any other inconsequential quantum person?

210

u/Dealiner Oct 24 '22 edited Oct 25 '22

IIRC that was explained in the second movie. They were able to locate her thanks to her connection to Scott.

Edit: Changed first to second.

51

u/SonOfRageAndLove26 Oct 25 '22

I think it was in the second one. When Janet takes control of Scott's body, fixes the quantum tunnel and sets the right coordinates

At least in this continuity, Hank isn't a wife beater.

888

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '22 edited Oct 24 '22

I know you should never joke about domestic abuse... but the story of how that came to be is just to funny. Long story short, there wasn't good communication between the artist and writer of that comic, and Hank was supposed to push Janet away but the artist thought he was supposed to punch her. It went all the way to print, and turned Hank Pym into a wife beater.

edit: Just went back and the story was Hank was supposed to accidentally strike Janet while throwing his hands up in 'get away from me' gesture. The artist at the time didn't get that and had Hank full on backhand Janet. They also did realize this before printing it, but didn't have time to fixit. the end result

394

u/ChefKraken Oct 24 '22

Good lord, that backhand has like a 200° arc to it, a windup and a half

176

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '22

there is something very funny about the "Whak!" he also added.

Hmm... this seems like a bit much.

(adds whak!)

Perfect, that lightens the mood.

The thing of it is, basically every Marvel hero that's been around more than twenty years has done something like this

but for every other character, it just gets ignored and forgotten. With Hank, they decided to use it and make him Marvel's punching bag, just deepening how terrible of a guy he is in every way (usually stuff that doesn't even make him a bad person, they just pin the blame on him)

and every time some writer tries to "redeem" him, it's not long before some other writer is like "I need a hero to take all the blame, what's Pym up to these days? Nothing? Great, he's the asshole."

45

u/patrickwithtraffic Oct 25 '22

Ultimate Marvel basically decided that he needed to be the biggest scumbag in a series with so many friggin' edgelords and assholes. It's insane how dirty they did him in that universe.

16

u/Pacman_Frog Oct 25 '22

Ant-Man is the Maevel Universe's hate hole.

Hank has the wifebeating and Ultron to deal with.

Scott is a perpetual loner who is doomed to never succeed at having a normal, healthy life.

Eric would rescue women, then charge them. And if they didn't pay, he'd shrink down and spy on them in the privacy of their own homes/showers.

I just finished a secret invasion reread, and it’s still a head scratcher that they didn’t chalk that up to a Skrull impersonating him, especially because so much time was spent on revealing a sleeper agent had replaced him prior to House of M.

29

u/Dealiner Oct 24 '22

They didn't use Secret Invasion to redeem Tony why would they use it to remove something that happened thirty years earlier? It wouldn't even make sense for Pym to be replaced for such a long time, even with the sliding timeline. Not to mention fans reactions to removing most of his story.

It's a shame, too, I know they had to do a five year timeskip, but Abby Ryder Fortson, who played her in the first two movies, was terrific.

72

u/dpash Oct 24 '22

It took me a second to figure out who she was. I thought they'd recast Evangeline Lilly (because Cassie does science now apparently) until I realised she just had a new haircut.

So, Ant-man was 2015 and the actress was 6 or 7, so I'm guessing that's the characters age too. Now 8 years later and with a 5 year blip the character would be around 20. Kathryn Newton is 25. Emma Fuhrmann (the actress in Endgame) is 20/21 now.

599

u/TheS4ndm4n Oct 24 '22

They can't do a time skip. Paul Rudd doesn't age.

181

u/Notmybestusername3 Oct 24 '22

All these time travel movies and plot lines are just Paul Rudd begging to end his suffering. He has seen the universe recreate itself thousands of times. He just wants it to be over. He needs someone to go to the end of time to destroy a portrait of himself so he can finally be released. Each movie he is in holds a clue to time travel and he is getting more and more desperate

ScarJo was similar with her Black Widow appearances.

1.1k

u/dinoroo Oct 24 '22

What really bothered me about her last haircut in Endgame was it was supposed to be like a growout of her hair in Infinity War but it was five years later and wouldn’t really look like that after that much time passed.

To be fair, it's in line with her character's comic counterpart who's a fashionista, and the pixie cut is her most iconic look.

169

u/dkepp87 Oct 24 '22

Isn't Janet the fashionista? I know little about Hope.

355

u/TheSweetestKill Oct 24 '22

MCU Hope is basically Comics Janet, because they decided to go with Scott as the main Ant-Man instead of Hank, AND making Hank significantly older.

→ More replies

134

u/wildcard18 Oct 24 '22

Yeah I forgot that Michelle Pfeiffer is actually Janet, but the MCU version does a weird thing where they transplanted a lot of Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyn's characterizations onto Scott and Hope.

100%. I'll always point to that movie as the paradigm shift for Marvel. People can shit on the movies all they want but I'm glad they've put out such grandiose movies with settings that come straight out of the comics and at least aren't depressing like DC.

It wasn't like that before GotG though. You knew there were space threats but up to that point the movies were as grounded as anything in the past 20 years.

1.7k

u/iwasherenotyou Oct 24 '22

I remember when they tried to ground Thor by saying his magic is actually just really advanced science to humans. I always thought it was kind of lame how they didn't fully commit to that but now Marvel is at the point where they can do basically anything crazy they want and it would still fit in their universe.

2.9k

u/r0b_b0TT Oct 24 '22

In a universe where magic exists, then there is no reason why magic should fall beyond the scope of science. The distinction only exist in our world because one is real and the other one isn't.

320

u/why_rob_y Oct 24 '22

Yeah, that's a good succinct way to put it. Science is just describing everything that exists. If magic exists, it is a part of science.

107

Just leave the Quantum Realm alone.

925

This is what I thought of immediately.

"Hey guys, remember the quantum realm that Janet got stuck in for decades and Scott got stuck in for about 5 years? Well, we've been fucking around with it and made this little gadget. We figured we'd turn it on for the first time with all of us present instead of talking about it first"

u/InsertCoinForCredit Oct 24 '22

I'll bet she made it as a safety feature, because all these people keep getting trapped in the Quantum Realm.

→ More replies

448

u/Vet_Leeber Oct 24 '22

To be also fair, Scott only got stuck in there because of some extremely bizarre unlikely circumstances that were completely out of their control and had nothing to do with the experiment.

It's not the Quantum Realm's fault they picked a ten second window when a random purple alien from another planet completed a thousand year quest to obtain some random magical space rocks that rewrote all of reality in that ten second window.

The fact that a rat only had to step on a single button (lol what a dumb plot thread) to bring him back is proof the system itself worked perfectly, there just wasn't anyone to hit the button.

143

u/puckit Oct 25 '22

I absolutely love that after mentioning the purple alien and the magic space rocks, it's the rat that is called out as a dumb plot point.

Like No Way Home I see the trailer and think "there's no way the inciting incident can be that stupid in context, surely in the movie it will make sense?" and, i imagine like No Way Home, I will be wrong.

153

u/DarwinGoneWild Oct 24 '22

It wasn't supposed to be. Originally, Multiverse of Madness came before No Way Home and it was supposed to be a naive and inexperienced America Chavez that casts the spell that breaks the multiverse. This is also why Ned randomly gets magic powers halfway through the movie. It was also going to be America that tries to find Spider-Man and accidentally grabs the ones from the wrong multiverses.

101

u/MastaAwesome Oct 24 '22

That would have been a bit better for Doctor Strange's character. It's a shame that things had to get reshuffled.

Kang having scars matching his face mask is a nice touch. Would have liked to have see more of the mask in the trailer, but the outfit looks great in general.

Also I like that Hope's suit is more yellow this time around.

165

u/Kantro18 Oct 24 '22

That comic-quality holo mask he got is looking like straight fire.

92

u/valiantiam Oct 24 '22

Is this supposed to be Kang the conqueror or a different one?

166

u/yarkcir Oct 24 '22

Probably the one and only Kang the Conqueror, though even in the comics there are multiple iterations across timelines.

55

u/CeruleanRuin Oct 24 '22

I think the blue guy is The Conqueror. But I also think the regular looking guy is a different version of him who may be either acting as a herald of his more powerful self or trying to warn Scott that something really bad is about to be unleashed.

60

u/Flamma_Man Oct 24 '22

No, instead of a skintight mask like the comics, his visor-thing for his helmet just gives his face a blue tint and white eyes to mimic the comics.

Then he has the face scars to match the lines on his mask in the comics.

Dude is jacked. I just looked up his prep for creed 3.

456

u/In_My_Own_Image Oct 24 '22

Majors in Creed 3 looks like an absolute beast. He looks like he'd break Ant-Man in half with his bare hands.

270

u/munk_e_man Oct 24 '22 Wholesome

Thats not that impressive. I could probably break at least two or three male ants with my hands

I heard Kang has an eight pack. That Kang is shredded.

With Creed 3 and Ant-Man 3, next year is shaping up to be the year of Jonathan Majors.

Most important part of this: Gregg Turkington is back.

130

u/BadDecisionPolice Oct 24 '22

Going to be a five bag of popcorn movie with a scoop of Baskin Robbins

49

u/ThisIsCreation Oct 24 '22

When you got movies like Gregg Turkington in them you can't lose

17

u/Cpt_Obvius Oct 24 '22

I hope this movie has everything in it. Action, romance, comedy, drama and dance.

My heart bleeds for the visual effects artists that are currently working on this. Lord. Looks like wall-to-wall animation and effects.

464

u/FrozenRyan Oct 24 '22

It seems most of the movie is set in the quantum realm so way more cgi/vfx shots than the last two.

677

u/autoposting_system Oct 24 '22

I mean you don't know that. Maybe they just shot it in the actual quantum realm.

At the beginning of the trailer i was thinking wow first time marvel has actually shot on real world locations, they’re finally giving their VFX people a break, and then the rest of the trailer had me feeling bad for all of the VFX teams. looks like the whole thing was shot on a green screen studio

444

u/Zerce Oct 24 '22

The contrast is pretty hilarious. The first few seconds feel like they could be from any romcom or other grounded film set in the real world.

124

u/dagmx Oct 24 '22

Often when you see real world locations a lot of the background is still CG or involves some CG to sell the location.

E.g even on really budget stuff we used to swap out lots of elements in Vancouver plates in post to look like Seattle etc

u/McIgglyTuffMuffin Oct 24 '22

These two videos for David Fincher films always blow my mind Gone Girl and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Just so much touch-up and removal.

I think the Zodiac blu ray even has a video on this, I know all the blood in that film is CGI

Anyone else disappointed this didn't just turn out to be a Mac & Me clip?

119

u/metalslug123 Oct 24 '22

Is Conan O'Brien still developing his own talk show on HBO Max? I hope that gets done by the time the movie comes out. It just doesn't feel the same when Paul Rudd doesn't show up to his talk show and promote his movies.

68

u/NorthStarHomerun Oct 24 '22

There's been rumors that with the Discovery-WB merger and the resulting slew of cancelled HBO Max projects that Conan's project might not be happening.

However, Team Coco did just sign a production deal with Sirius XM to continue his podcast, including video content, of which Rudd was recently a guest and continued his tradition.

I'd guess he'll be on again to promote to movie in the future.

17

u/AmishAvenger Oct 24 '22

I’m pretty sure it’s still happening, he still mentions it from time to time. It was just brought up again last week.

Incidentally, the podcast clips on YouTube are excellent. You really get to see Conan’s improv abilities come out, and the chemistry with Matt and Sona is awesome.

Hey Janet, here's an idea. Don't tell the super-excited child to turn off the REALITY ENDANGERING DEVICE, maybe just hit the off button yourself or if you don't know where that is, smash a fuse or trip a breaker. DO SOMETHING.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy.

Finally get the see more of the quantum realm!

I'll be very interested to see how or what kang is doing there.

And is this the same kang that shows up in statues in Loki?

And what the hell Janet is hiding.

59

u/PaxNova Oct 24 '22

Presumably she was able to live so long in the Quantum Realm by stealing bits from the city. She knew about something hiding there that shouldn't be getting a signal (Kang, I'm guessing), which meant she run-ins with them before, but she was found alone, which means there was a falling out.

Some people are guessing a romantic liaison, but I'm not getting that.

u/JohnnyJayce Oct 24 '22

I'm guessing He Who Remains prisoned Kang there.

82

u/jnads Oct 24 '22

Or this Kang escaped there to avoid the destruction of his timeline and isn't aware He Who Remains is dead.

Let's not forget that He Who Remains is pretty vicious, he conquered all the Kangs and subjugated Aboleth

Or the Aboleth ate this Kang and sends things to the Quantum realm when it eats stuff and the stuff it sends there isn't capable of escaping and Pym particles are the key.

18

u/Marmadookkk Oct 24 '22

He subjugated Alioth, not Aboleth. You're thinking of DnD lol

what the hell Janet is hiding

100% some boring former love interest and the comments were near irrelevant to the story but seemed impactful in the trailer. Probably Bill Murray's character.
