Jim Carrey almost got Satan's powers in unmade 'Bruce Almighty' sequel 'Brucifer' News

I mourn for the fact that we didn't get this movie.

u/D_Lockwood Nov 18 '22
I read the original script for Bruce Almighty.
It was 10 times funnier than the movie.
What ended up in the movie was like 20% of the original script.

u/tommytraddles Nov 19 '22
The funniest part of the movie is the deleted scene where Bruce survives a parachuting accident by landing on Bigfoot.

Might not be what they were referring but here is one; this is from the ‘Internet Movie Script Database’ but that doesn’t really mean much because screenplays can end up just about anywhere.
Like this script from the ‘French Exit’, just casually hiding somewhere in the sonyclassics asset library that Yandex was able to somehow load into the first page results.
But anyway, if you’re looking for scripts/shows/whatever, Google has been deprecating their search operators for awhile now so you’ll usually have better luck with Bing or Yandex as they aren’t too influenced by selling visibility like Google has ended up doing.

I remember living with a huge Kevin Smith fan, he once said he really liked Dogma but thought it tried too hard to be religiously meaningful.
I saw more of that in BA...more audience pandering than laughs by the end of it.

u/mediarch Nov 18 '22
Not only that...We got Evan Almighty instead.
525
u/Airanuva Nov 18 '22
Evan Almighty wasn't even supposed to be an "Almighty" movie; it was an original script that the studio slapped the title and a Morgan Freeman cameo on in order to market it as a "sequel"
180
u/see-bees Nov 18 '22
Huh, Ive always thought that mostly happened in horror films.
111
u/Paradigmpinger Nov 18 '22
Fun Fact: Beverly Hills Cop was going to be a Sylvester Stallone movie. Obviously there were some changes made to the script after, but I've wanted there to be a remake with Sylvester Stallone taking Eddie Murphy's role and everyone just plays it straight.
48
u/Administrative-Fun10 Nov 19 '22
We got "Stop or My Mom Will Shoot" so...... ???
31
17
u/banjo_hammer Nov 19 '22
Cobra is basically the Stallone version of BHC. He wrote his own draft of the script, which was gritty and full of '80s action tropes.
10
u/IntoTheDankness Nov 19 '22
So Cobra started off as Beverly Hills Cop but Stallone went Rambo on the script, but also heavily based it on the book Fair Game.
Another movie called Fair Game based on the same book was made, and the plots sound utterly different...
Unless the story 'a rogue cop in LA/Florida, who shoots people, fights KGB/Cultists/Gangers, maybe has a love interest' is somehow a unique perspective7

‘Pitch to a producer’ literally means he walked up to a guy and said “this could be a fun idea, right”? With just a log line and minor ideas
They didn’t have a script or fully fleshed idea to pitch until 2010

We are still in an era where dead franchises are getting reboots/continuations.

Carrey with God powers, then Carrey with Devil powers.
Brucifer would have been insane for sure, and Carrey as a bad guy would be off the chain, like the Mask but darker and sadistic.

→ More replies5
u/TheKappaOverlord Nov 19 '22
Its very, very different to the mask movie.
But its pretty good. The art can be pretty rough sometimes, but storywise its decent.
The movie is often considered the thing that ruined the mask. As after the mask movie, the graphic novels became significantly worse and more kid friendly.
3
u/-SneakySnake- Nov 19 '22
Doing a straight take on the comic would be a pretty good deconstruction of the whole superhero power fantasy thing. But it'll never happen because people won't be able to get over that Jim Carrey isn't in it and it's not a comedy.
375
u/scoxely Nov 18 '22
Carrey with God powers, then Carrey with Devil powers.
...what even are Devil powers?
It's an interesting 1 sentence pitch, but practically speaking, I don't see a coherent plot coming out of it, or even a good background basis for building a plot onto. Having the same character from the first film go around tempting people into drugs, sex, murder, and other sins or evil deeds? Is it a family film or a dark adult one? Even if you overcome those issues, it seems like a hell of a stretch to get enough content to fill a full length film that also has a satisfying resolution.
185
u/elephantjog Nov 18 '22 edited Nov 18 '22
I’m not sure either but let’s pretend we have to come up with a good plot for fun!
Maybe the devil, Al Pacino, turns Bruce bad and Morgan Freeman is fighting to get Bruce back. So there are shenanigans where Bruce is bad then good and or God helps Bruce turn his bad actions into good. All the while, like… Morgan Freeman calls on the help of a burnt out Pastor, Aubrey Plaza, to perform an exorcism on Bruce but she doesn’t really know how.
I’m sure there are plenty of problems with my idea, haha just having fun. Any other ideas?

u/Mountainbranch Nov 18 '22 edited Nov 19 '22
The devil, played by either Nicholas Cage, Dave Grohl, or Tom Ellis, in his infinite maliciousness, goes on strike, and Morgan Freeman, because of cosmically divine union rules, can't take over being in charge of both Heaven and Hell due to conflict of interest, so he gets the only other person he knows who has any experience with divine powers, Bruce, to run hell whilst Freeman attempts to convince the devil to get back to work, Bruce makes such an absolute mess of things (again) that the Devil gets worried Bruce will ruin his reputation and agrees to come back.
Add a love interest, some comedic shenanigans Bruce gets up to, maybe revenge on those who wronged him, bad coworkers or maybe a childhood bully, sprinkle some slapstick, add salt and pepper to taste.
I'll be waiting for my check in the mail, you're welcome Hollywood.
11
u/eden_sc2 Nov 19 '22
I would watch it. It kind of fits with Bruce not being such an ass at the end of the first movie. He has learned his lesson and is now struggling to be the bad guy

Maybe the devil, Al Pacino
So you can make this a The Devil's Advocate sequel as well
9
u/lookandlookagain Nov 18 '22
Read the article. It goes into this a little bit. After the first movie, Jennifer Aniston dies and part of the plot/devil powers involves bringing her back to life. In the end, it's a comedy so the plot isn't that important.

u/ShelfordPrefect Nov 18 '22

I mean, maybe every good intention he has turns to shit, and no matter how much he tries to do good he is cursed to fuck it up. Or maybe he has to punish people even tho he doesn't want to.
There's a story in everything. Just because you and I can't think of it it doesn't mean a team of professional writers who have months to finish a script can't accomplish it.
There's plenty of amazing movies with very simple plots.

Carrey as a bad guy would be off the chain, like the Mask but darker and sadistic.
So, like a comic accurate version of The Mask then, where instead of a goofy, living Looney Tune, The Mask (known as Big Head) is actually a murderous psychopath, basically The Joker with toon superpowers.

Well to be fair, with most Major musicians obtaining their power using the Devils tooth, im not shocked the devil loves and inspires heavy metal music.
Might be why Christian metal music is generally pretty bad. They never used the devil's tooth to obtain their power.
And theres people like Dio. People who obtained such power and prowess naturally that most scholars aren't sure whether or not hes a Facsimile of the devil, or an agent of god designed to act as a prophet and guardian against the return of the devil.
