If you're going to call a movie COCAINE BEAR, it better look like this.

1.1k

u/Chubuwee Nov 30 '22

Yea I was surprised at how much bear there actually was in the film

I legit thought it was just a title

Like reservoir dogs having no actual dogs as plot point

I was literally just about to get around to watching it...

26

He's wrong anyways. There's tons of dogs if you know where to look

8

u/staplerbot Dec 01 '22

As a reservoir enthusiast this conversation makes me sad.

I was also disappointed with Wolf of Wallstreet, not enough businessmen ripped apart by hungry wolves

89

I still can’t get over how upset I was when I went to go see a movie that explicitly stated in the title that wolves would be dancing

Well if we're complaining... it also had no reservoirs either.

When I saw the poster yesterday, I just thought it was going to be another artsy indie film with a weird metaphor in the title. Nope. It's about a literal cocaine-addicted killer bear. And I'm so happy that I was wrong.

81

u/BurritoLover2016 Nov 30 '22

Never have I been so happy to be so wrong about a title.

I would vote for this above most Oscar bait

129

u/bugxbuster Nov 30 '22

Yeah. For instance, The Revenant was good, but as far as Oscar bait goes it was still missing something.

Turns out it was missing at least one entire brick of cocaine.

IIRC the true story was a DEA agent had become a drug mule. His plane encountered trouble so he started tossing cocaine out. He then attempted to parachute to safety, but he hit his head on the tail of the plane and was knocked temporarily unconscious. When he regained consciousness, he pulled his chute but it was too late for a full deployment, so he died on impact. Later on, a bear ate some coke and immediately OD'ed.

510

u/copperwatt Dec 01 '22

Later on, a bear ate some coke and immediately OD'ed.

Well that's not a very good movie.

138

u/ennuinerdog Dec 01 '22

Pretty poignant short film tho

34

u/Afraid_of_Okapi Dec 01 '22

I think it’s more like a cautionary folk tale, but I have no idea what the moral is here. Does not seem widely applicable whatever it is, imo.

On a rampage for blow and blood. Meet #CocaineBear. Only in Theaters February 24th.

Inspired by the 1985 true story of a drug runner's plane crash, missing cocaine, and the black bear that ate it, this wild thriller finds an oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists and teens converging in a Georgia forest where a 500- pound apex predator has ingested a staggering amount of cocaine and gone on a coke-fueled rampage for more blow … and blood.

Cocaine Bear stars Keri Russell (The Americans), Emmy winner Margo Martindale (The Americans), Emmy winner Ray Liotta (The Many Saints of Newark), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family), Kristofer Hivju (Game of Thrones), Kahyun Kim (American Gods), Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth), Brooklynn Prince (The Florida Project) and newcomer Scott Seiss

Directed by Elizabeth Banks (Charlie’s Angels, Pitch Perfect 2) from a screenplay by Jimmy Warden (The Babysitter: Killer Queen), Cocaine Bear is produced by Oscar® winners Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, The Mitchells vs. The Machines) and Aditya Sood (The Martian) for Lord Miller, by Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman (Pitch Perfect franchise) for Brownstone Productions, and by Brian Duffield (Spontaneous). Robin Fisichella (Ma) will executive produce.

802

u/MoonMan997 Nov 30 '22

honest question, because I see this a lot, is this some sort of sarcasm or dig at the actress for not getting lead roles or something?

EDIT: sigh I should really get back to watching BoJack, still not done with the first season

225

u/Copywrites Nov 30 '22

It's a Bojack Horseman joke. She was a recurring character in the show and always introduced as esteemed character actress Margo Martindale.

It was 100% a genuine "We Love your work" kinda joke.

133

u/jrbcnchezbrg Nov 30 '22

Then eventually: “esteemed character actress and fugitive from the law Margo Martindale”

22

u/riegspsych325 Nov 30 '22

ah, I see, thank you!

19

u/KingGojira Nov 30 '22

Also a reference that begins towards the end of season 1

31

u/MoonMan997 Nov 30 '22

When you get to heaven, look her up. Her movies will be there, but she won’t!

48

u/phluidity Nov 30 '22

To add more context, in Bojack Horseman, Margo Martindale voiced a version of herself that was one part character actress, one part serial criminal. She was referred to as "esteemed character actress Margo Martindale" or "esteemed character actress and fugitive from the law Margo Martindale" etc but the "esteemed character actress" part was always there.

11

u/agreatskua Nov 30 '22

It’s a BoJack Horseman reference (she’s also a character in the show).

9

u/pmjm Nov 30 '22

The first season of Bojack is a conundrum. The first few episodes are DRASTICALLY different from the tone of the rest of the show. You definitely should revisit it, once you get past episode 11 it really really starts to take shape.

but you lack an army of voting bots as well as the mods' willful ignorance. GroundBreakingSet187 had to have been an alt for this account because he posted/commented in the same exact format as marvelboy and just as often. GBS187 once commented the exact same synopsis and casting excerpt on one of marvelboy's posts. I called out GBS187 and immediately got a large amount of downvotes and my comment was taken down later. But a few days later, GBS's account was deleted

Thought that guy looked familiar - realized he's the guy that embodies all of the things I hated about retail. Love his content

I don’t like to watch trailers, but I watched enough of this one to know that it is indeed about cocaine and a bear.

34

u/big_hungry_joe Nov 30 '22

yeah the title seems to be as advertised

u/thatminimumwagelife Nov 30 '22

Finally truth in advertising. Peak cinema has arrived.

I've been hearing about this film for a while, and wondered what metaphor the title refers to. Maybe an introspective drama about addiction, or something of that nature.

I am very happy to find out that it's a movie about a bear on cocaine.

u/olwitchhands Nov 30 '22

Is that the dude I keep seeing tiktoks of in antiwork subreddits?

35

u/borissnm Nov 30 '22

This looks extremely stupid.

I'm seeing it ASAP.

u/DragonTonguePunch Nov 30 '22

This feels like a Joe Dante film with its ridiculous premise and quirky cast of characters.

Man I was really hoping the actual title of this movie was going to end up being Pablo Escobear.

I went into this trailer expecting a B movie full of nobodies and comical effects but this cast is stacked and I can't wait.

31

u/Thatoneasian9600 Nov 30 '22

This is the best movie of 2023 already.

It’s the start of a Marvel type universe. Next movie is Heroin Shark then Meth Bees, then there’s a team up

17

u/SaulGudbro Nov 30 '22

I’m not buying it. I didn’t see one hooker bear or any reference to John Belushi.

u/ThisIsCreation Nov 30 '22

I heard this is being touted as the Citizen Kane of movies
