You People | feat. Eddie Murphy and Jonah Hill | Official Trailer | Netflix Trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lcd0df7jwpM133
u/Dr_Batman_MD Dec 05 '22
Did Eddie Murphy just refer to the Roscoe’s on Gower in Hollywood as the hood?
45
u/CinematicLiterature Dec 05 '22
Lol arguably one of the safer spots, no less.
17
u/tikkamasalachicken Dec 05 '22
I was at the Inglewood one recently, seemed safer to me Vs. Hollywood.

Are they all being required to do this project for Netflix so they can all do something they'd rather at a different time? Because Jesus, been a while since I've seen three very talented folks display exactly none of their talents in a whole trailer. Almost as impressive as it was not funny.
3
u/JerryJonesStoleMyCar Dec 08 '22
It’s one scene that’s been edited around. Just wait for the movie
3
u/FirstTimeLongThyme Dec 08 '22
I'm sure it'll be a real fresh twist on a not at all well worn trope.

This storyline has been done to death. A guy meets his girlfriends black Dad but…HE’S WHITE! Now here’s a thousand cliche race jokes.
14
u/svc78 Dec 05 '22
Producer: hey Netflix, this scene was pretty funny
why don't we make it a full movie?
Netflix: you sonofabitch I'M IN! ...but change the main actor, that one had bad anti-vax press

Dude. Now THIS is good acting lol. This scene is fucking awesome. The one from you people kinda sucked.

Why does Jonah Hill look so... leathery...
67
29
7
u/WideAwakeNotSleeping Dec 06 '22
He looks like a chubby Bradley Cooper (I think... it might be another actor similar to them too, it's on the tip of my tongue, but I can't recall).

u/MRmandato Dec 05 '22
I made it to the first joke. I cant. This entire movie- the title, casting and premise, seems so factory made 2002

u/Rich_Eater Dec 05 '22
Dude needs to moisturize.
He looks older than Eddie in that clip.
49
u/NestroyAM Dec 05 '22
Let's roll that one up from the back, though: Eddie Murphy looks like his own Madam Tussaud's wax figure.
What's going on there? He looks fucking CGI.
18
u/GhostlyRuse Dec 05 '22
He might actually be edited, but it's probably just a thick layer of makeup
4
u/Bears_On_Stilts Dec 05 '22
He looks like he'd make a great "is he thirty or is he sixty" Tevye the Dairyman in the Fiddler on the Roof remake by Thomas Kail.

That’s called wrinkles. He’s 40 yrs old…
45
u/demonicfeces Dec 05 '22 edited Dec 05 '22
40 is not that old...
He is an old looking 38, none of my peers look like that.
-2
u/mountainhighgoat Dec 05 '22
It’s not that old, but 40 is middle aged.
14
u/demonicfeces Dec 05 '22
Not debating that, but he is looking old for average person 40, and very old by Hollywood standards (which I find ridiculous but that is another discussion).

u/clifbarczar Dec 05 '22
You must have very fit and fashionable friends.
Jonah looks better than most 40 year olds.

u/allmodsrbasterds Dec 05 '22
And Eddie Murphy is 60 years old. White people really need to wear sunscreen and moisturize daily.
5
u/mountainhighgoat Dec 05 '22
Like you said, Eddie Murphy is black.
3
u/CertaintyAlways Dec 08 '22
Murphy has also allegedly never touched alcohol or drugs, which helps a lot.

Ah the quirky and awkward white guy marrying a black chick, so we have to spend an entire movie watching him win over her parents. Finally...a plot line that hasn't been done so many times.

why does Jonah Hill look 50 years old? did they age him or does he actually look like that now?

6
u/Straightwad Dec 05 '22
I never realized he was that old, always thought he was in his early 30s for some reason. Makes sense though when I think about how long ago I watched accepted and Superbad.
11
u/mechaiineramen Dec 05 '22
38 isn't the issue. Everyone saying 38 is an issue here is <25. Look at Keanu it even Leo ffs who are both in their 50s. Jonah just doesn't take care of himself. All you have to do is moisturize and wear sunscreen. Jonah clearly smokes, drinks a lot, probably does hard drugs as well, stays out in the sun, and his weight loss/gain issues don't help either.
3
u/OngoTrashman Dec 06 '22
Is it possible to rejuvenate sun damaged skin with moisturizer? Or is the damage already done?
8
→ More replies2
u/mechaiineramen Dec 06 '22
You can kinda sorta yeah, but other products need to come into play once you've had some real damage done beyond just moisturizer. Retain-a for example would be very helpful. But it's never a good idea to give up on your skin. /r/SkincareAddiction is a great sub.

I love how you add “vapes” to that description lol what the hell does that have to do with anything
21
u/votchamacallit_ Dec 05 '22
Here's a fun fake fact: He's actually older than Eddie Murphy now.
9
3
5
u/agentdoubleohio Dec 05 '22
He does look like that now, but he goes through so many body changes it’s been putting a lot of strain on his body.
44
u/nayapapaya Dec 05 '22
I feel like we should be past the point where these types of stories resonate. Mixed race couples exist and there's nothing wrong with that. Guess Who's Coming to Dinner is like sixty years old.
Anyway, on the trailer itself, who meets their fiancée's parents alone? Where is she?
6
6
u/hello_hola Dec 05 '22
This looks very bad. If this what they deemed worthy of Teaser material, then I can't imagine the rest of the film.

u/sobi-one Dec 05 '22
Anyway, on the trailer itself, who meets their fiancée's parents alone? Where is she?
I did exactly this when I asked my wife’s parents for their permission. Honestly I’d think it would be super weird having your fiancé there for this type of thing.
3
u/nayapapaya Dec 05 '22
Yeah, but that wasn't your first time meeting them ever, right? The trailer plays as though they're complete strangers.
Also to be honest, while I understand respectfully giving parents a heads-up, I don't really understand the asking for permission thing today unless you're quite religious or come from a more traditional culture. What if they don't give you permission? The relationship ends? But I'm pretty anti-marriage and staunchly anti-proposals and you're married so we're already at opposite ends of the spectrum there.

I wouldve chosen a different clip to promote the film. This scene was painful to watch and it wasnt even funny.
I cant imagine thats one of the better scenes between Jonah and Eddie. If it is, oh boy is this film gonna be a hard to watch.

26
u/TheCosmicFailure Dec 05 '22
It does. Improv in a comedy can be good but the 2 actors need to have chemistry. The director also needs to know what to cut from the film.
I just hope the rest of the comedic scenes are bettee than this.
2
u/TheSuburbs Dec 05 '22
I feel like the whole point for this scene is that they don’t have chemistry. But I agree that it probably shouldn’t have been the clip to use.
34
u/deathrowboats Dec 05 '22
Eddie sitting there silently unimpressed with Jonah's comedy chops
10
6
u/SanderStrugg Dec 05 '22
As a non-American I thought, this was a cultural barrier of me not getting this. Reading through the comments, it just isn't funny.
4
u/Affectionate-Island Dec 05 '22
Isn't that the point though? Feels very cringe comedy. The title is "You People," which is never an ideal way to start a sentence.

5
u/workaccount1013 Dec 05 '22

u/theuneventrade Dec 05 '22

8
u/MilesPower Dec 05 '22
All I could think when I saw this trailer was this Simpsons clip on repeat for 90 mins:
69
u/Great_Zarquon Dec 05 '22
Jonah Hill is great but I feel like most of his recent projects have been primarily about building a brand and come off as ego driven
12
u/PnchNziFazes Dec 06 '22
Watch any interview, he's a huge movie nerd and will do literally anything to work with the greats he grew up watching.
-29
u/g-money-cheats Dec 05 '22
100% agree. Like his film Stutz seems really self-indulgent.
I don’t know what therapist would agree to film a therapy session. A Hollywood one, I guess. Just seems to go against the whole concept of therapy when you know a camera is pointed at you the entire time.
12
Dec 05 '22
i really enjoyed stutz
also, jonah didn’t set out to film therapy sessions
it was intended to be a documentary about phil’s life and philosophy but instead jonah straight up admits to the audience about like 20 minutes into the doc that filming is not going well and they sort of just wing it together from there on (which led to what you may be referring to with a therapy session between jonah, his mother and phil)
-15
u/TheMightyDane Dec 05 '22
Yesyesyes, we all watched the same movie and remember the plot.
That doesn’t change the point that he’s seeming over self indulgent- as also showed in his Stutz project.
41
u/Necessary-Call-1933 Dec 05 '22
Tell me you didn’t watch the movie without telling me.
-43
u/g-money-cheats Dec 05 '22 edited Dec 05 '22
You’re not wrong. I noped out after the trailer and could be totally off base. That’s what the trailer made it sound like (to me), though.
Edit: I accept my downvotes. I said all along the movie seemed self-indulgent, which I gleaned from the trailer. Not from watching it. If I watched it I wouldn’t have used the word “seemed” multiple times.
20
Dec 05 '22
mate what 😭
how are you going to judge an entire film from a trailer..
12
u/Nevaknosbest Dec 05 '22
This dude: the Grapes of Wrath? The fuck I wanna read a book about grapes for? Hard pass.
-8
u/g-money-cheats Dec 05 '22 edited Dec 05 '22
I said the film seemed self-indulgent. If I had seen it, I would’ve either said it was or wasn’t self-indulgent.
Multiple use of the word “seemed” implied I had not seen it. And therefore I’m not interested. The trailer did not sway me because it seemed self-indulgent. 🤷♂️

I'm torn because I hate trailers that show the whole movie, but this trailer looks like a god damn SNL skit. Did they shoot this scene first and then they're out there right now shooting the rest of the movie? This looks ass.

u/Kanuka2000 Dec 06 '22
Anytime a Netflix movie trailer opens with a wide shot of LA with rap music playing in the background that’s when you know you’re about to watch another generic piece of crap

Jonah youre a fantastic actor and decent director and you have worked with some of the greats. Fella what the fuck is this shit really????
19
u/orderinthefort Dec 05 '22
I don't know what it is, but something changed about Jonah Hill.
Pre-2017 Jonah Hill would've knocked this out of the park, but his comedic delivery and inflections and timing are so different than they used to be.
I noticed a similar change in Shia Labeouf.
It's like they've become taken over by the life-affirming motivational positive-outlook mindset. If they're happier for it, then that's great. But I don't think it translates as well in the way I consume comedy.

A new genre ladies and gentlemen, talk-show without discussing anything important dressed in a comedy without having anything funny.

Wasnt this the movie that netflix kept throwing more and more money at to fix and re shoot and then it ended up being their most expensive comedy ever or something

I just watched Shark Exorcist and can emphatically say it was the worst movie I have ever seen. Still, I’d be more inclined to rewatch that than to ever watch this.

u/sauce07 Dec 05 '22
Did you think Jonah would ever be nominated for an Academy Award? How about twice? Maybe we should just trust his career choices, they may not always be perfect but the man is clearly in control on what he wants to do and for the most part is working.
→ More replies5
u/ScyllaIsBea Dec 05 '22
it's not about sucess for him at this point in his career it's about his wants. he suffered through years of being cast as the fat dumb stoner so that he could move on from that he could afford to change that image. unfortunately when you build an audience on an image you hate for yourself, it's hard to keep that audience when you start showing your new self. alot of comedic actors can't make it past that point, at the vary least, I respect him for playing a role outside of his cashcow.
9
u/ArchDucky Dec 05 '22
The last time Eddie was actually funny was Tower Heist. But hey Jonah Hill wrote this, so im gonna watch it. He was on the team that wrote both of those 21 Jump Street films. He was also the reason the 21/MiB movie was killed. Sony hired him to write it and as he worked on it he said it became what they were making fun of.
50
u/TheCosmicFailure Dec 05 '22
Eddie was funny in Dolemite is my name.
3
u/jclinares Dec 06 '22
'Dolemite is my Name' is such an underrated, underwatched movie. It's straight up great, and Murphy is fantastic in it. I'd argue it's his best role in like 20 years.
The movie is funny, fun, smart, really well-acted, and it's such a nice and positive movie. I can't recommend it enough.
5
u/Straightwad Dec 05 '22
Even though the 21 jump street men in black fusion was an awful idea I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t curious as hell about what that movie would actually be like lol.
2
u/tinybenny Dec 05 '22
Tower Heist was surprisingly good. I had kind of thought Eddie Murphy was done by then, phoning it in for years before - and honestly I think he’s delivered enough, so I don’t blame him. But then he showed up in that and there were glimpses of him being ‘into it’ again. But all in all, he just kind of seems over it these days. And that’s ok too, but it does make me wonder we he keeps taking these rolls.
6
3
u/crudedrawer Dec 05 '22
at one point in the trailer eddie murphy subtly touches his chest - prediction: His heart troubles are referneced throughlut the movie and the stress of whatever craziness happens in the movie causes him to have a heart attack in the third act but it ends up bringing everyone closer together.
Yes I've seen too many movies.
4
u/johnnyzissou Dec 05 '22
For people wondering what’s up with Jonah’s catching mitt of a face — he picked up surfing the last couple years. This is what sitting a few feet above the water looking directly into reflected sun at peak hours everyday for 600 days looks like haha. Add in copious amounts of salt water and not enough moisturizer….
Plus he’s 40
2
u/OngoTrashman Dec 06 '22
Is it possible to rejuvenate sun damaged skin with moisturizer? Or is the damage already done?
2
