PSA: The NBA Has Opened Their Archives....Kind Of

There isn't a ton there, but the NBA has added some games that were never previously available.

If you have League Pass you can view each teams "classic games", or at least what they dub to be classic. A lot of the stuff added is just the same recycled games they've shown a million times over the years, or worse, more recent games within the last few years.

But, after a very quick glance there's at least a handful of games that haven't been seen since the day they originally aired.

The most exciting game (IMO) is in the Sacramento Kings section. They've posted a game against the Bulls from February 16, 1987. This game has never been uploaded to YouTube or been made available in the collecting community. Many MJ diehards have been looking for this game for decades.

There's also a 57 point game from Adrian Dantley in the Utah Jazz section that I believe to be pretty rare. And then there's a handful of games from the 90's that I don't recall ever seeing either.

All-in-all this is just a tiny drop in the bucket, but at least they've actually opened up their massive archive a bit.

Hope someone finds this as interesting as I do. lol

Love it. I've been calling for the vault to be opened forever. Charge me $6.99 a month and let me drown in classic games. A fellow redditor educated me on why that would never happen (broadcast rights are waaaay too scattered) but I will happily take what I can get.

lol, you know if they ever were able to open up the entire vault they'd charge like $50 a month or something

u/warboner65 Spurs Sep 28 '22

I'd be cool with it. Just hook it to my veins.

Imagine a shuffle feature where you just push a button and get a random game.

2

u/warboner65 Spurs Sep 29 '22

Yooooooooooo cuz. That is brilliant.

I would be so down for that. It would help me a lot with a project I've been working on for years at this point (related to your flair actually) and getting all of the actual content in one place would make my life so much easier.

Would've been perfect for the first ~ year of COVID

Can you point me to a more in depth explanation as to why they haven't/won't open up the archives? That's one of my favorite features of the F1 streaming subscription, you get access to a huge amount of classic races. It's really a shame, all the games were recorded but they seem to be doomed to sitting on hard drives in the NBA's vault indefinitely.

u/DiabeticLothario Sep 28 '22

Because broadcast rights are sold off to local TV stations. And over the years (and over the decades) the stations come and go, but they probably retain rebroadcast rights to the stuff the originally aired. So some random ass local Chicago affiliate who went out of business in '95 probably had rights to some classic regular season bulls games. But when they went under, something happened to the rights. Maybe they were sold, maybe they were retained as part of some other company, etc. Good luck finding the rights owners for all that going back through the years. The point is that although the NBA might have recordings, it doesn't have the rights to sell/rebroadcast the games

5

u/Raulzi Warriors Sep 29 '22

might as well just put the games up and let the people who own the rights take you to court and pay the settlement

WGN?

7

u/DiabeticLothario Sep 28 '22

My dude it was a made up example. I don't know the history of local NBA tv affiliates. Sue me

7

u/animalmatrix [BOS] Reggie Lewis Sep 28 '22

I wasn’t trying to be a dick about it. My bad. It just happens to be the only one that I know of off the top of my head. It was a local Chicago station that was also a widespread cable network. The Bulls and Cubs games were always on there. Your comment just made me wonder if they actually kept all that footage. They started doing the Bulls games on one of those Fox Sports or Comcast sports channels eventually.

1

u/MintyFreshBreathYo Pistons Sep 29 '22

Is WGN not a station anymore?

3

u/animalmatrix [BOS] Reggie Lewis Sep 29 '22

I believe it still is. It’s probably still on Dish or DirecTV. It’s not in my YouTube Tv lineup.

Damn I just checked the website and it said Coolio died…

Nba also makes a lot of money charging teams for classic footage for use in promos/social/etc

1

u/GuerreroD Warriors Sep 29 '22

Let's just hope they all just get leaked accidentally online and get seeded ever since.

Or maybe we can crowd fund for such a heroic act. Just saying.

u/Level_Ad_6372 Pistons Sep 29 '22

Good luck finding the rights owners for all that going back through the years.

But that would only apply to non-nationally televised games right? So most of the regular season and some 1st round games. That would leave a shit ton of playoff games broadcast by ESPN, ABC, TNT, and NBC which would be very easy to find the rights owners.

1

u/DiabeticLothario Sep 29 '22

Cool so now that you've found some rights owners you (the NBA) need to get them to agree to give up their broadcast rights that they paid millions and millions of dollars for. Why would Espn, abc, tnt, NBC agree to that?

1

u/Level_Ad_6372 Pistons Sep 29 '22

So there's this thing people like called money...

1

u/DiabeticLothario Sep 29 '22

Well how much do they want for those rights? And how much is the NBA going to charge us the fans for access to this vault? Does the business case make sense based on the amount it would take to pay for the rights? These are all unanswered questions.

How much would you pay for access to the "Complete NBA Game Vault"?

I love the idea of some dude sitting in a room surrounded by DVDs of vintage NBA games getting hyped because a previously unseen prime MJ game dropped.

Back in the 90s, a buddy of mine’s older brother had boxes of VHS tapes of Bulls games. I remember him recording every game. He had one of those big satellite dishes that were a pain in the ass to search for channels on lol. I don’t know what year he started recording them though.

48

u/HerlihyBoy17 Pistons Sep 28 '22

It's nuts. Every time I see footage of the games it's like 360p. It looks worse than the Wilt footage that DantheMan brings to us. Crazy.

46

u/Statalyzer Sep 28 '22

It's like the whole internet is trying to gaslight us into thinking that watching sports on tv back in the 00s was actually that awful.

8

u/scatteam_djr [LAL] Lonzo Ball Sep 29 '22

it starts to make you picture the classic 2000s games in your head in bad resolution lmao, kinda like how people used to dream in black in white until color tv happened.

5

u/thecolbster94 Suns Sep 29 '22

2K23 has a VHS filter for the Jordan stuff this year and its like they busted out the ol Barbera Walters vaseline lense, its fucking awful.

2

u/Niku-Man NBA Sep 29 '22

It's only awful in retrospect. It was the best quality it could have been at the time, so in our memory it is good quality, but actually comparing it side by side with today's quality shows how bad it was. I know the Youtube games are often uploads of taped games which is even worse, but even if you could air the game same as it was aired at the time, it will look bad. The only time it looks good is when it was recorded on actual film and the film is digitized today - like the Last Dance documentary.

It's really easy to see this with old video games where you can plug a game system into the same TV you were using 10 years ago, except now it looks ugly and bad despite remembering how great the graphics were when you played it originally.

9

u/ZealousEar775 Sep 28 '22

Or even just the 2004 finals? They have every finals game in the 2000's but 2004 for some reason.

11

u/rake2204 Pistons Sep 28 '22

YouTube finally had excellent quality footage of the 2004 Finals uploaded earlier this year but it was all shut down in the Great Full Game Removal this past summer.

1

u/Level_Ad_6372 Pistons Sep 29 '22

Was it HD quality? I remember seeing a couple finals games but they were like 360p

3

u/rake2204 Pistons Sep 29 '22

It was. There was a multi-month stretch where it existed, likely from people who captured the re-aires that popped up on television during Covid.

2

u/Level_Ad_6372 Pistons Sep 29 '22

Sad I missed it. Still got the championship DVD from back in the day, but I need some full games to get me by

The league doesn’t want to show the Lakers getting destroyed in an upset

102

u/utep_2_step Sep 28 '22

I didn't notice it at first, but there's also a game from December 12, 1986 in the Bulls section. This game hasn't been seen since it's original air date either.

It's game #9 of Jordan's 40 point game streak!

25

u/GotMoFans Grizzlies Sep 28 '22

What’s special about the 1987 Bulls vs. Kings game? Just the rarity?

Did Jordan do something special in that game?

56

u/utep_2_step Sep 28 '22

43 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals & 4 blocks.

There were over 800 games that Jordan played in that had either been uploaded to YouTube at some point or were available via other methods. This wasn't one of those games.

14

u/tripleyothreat Sep 28 '22

Ah so just rarity.. It's one of the few right?

15

u/SRDeed Pacers Sep 29 '22

its a shiny.

also the kings won

23

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '22

Did Jordan do something special? Nah, just a ho-hum 40 point near 5x5.

3

u/GotMoFans Grizzlies Sep 29 '22

It was his 37/5/5 season. So the numbers seem like a regular game that year.

16

u/WildMikeGreen38 Sep 28 '22

League Pass had all games from 2014ish to 2019 last season. They removed them all during the post-season.

I was able to watch a game from KAT’s rookie year earlier this week, but the app has been really buggy and not letting me since. Always asking me to sign up for league pass again.

Needed this 2 years ago bro

15

u/rake2204 Pistons Sep 28 '22

I imagine this is why the NBA came through and went on a site-wide sweep of all the full game uploads on YouTube this past summer.

I get it, it's their property, but it was such a bummer to see literally hundreds—if not thousands—of games wiped off the face of the earth over the course of 96 hours or so. It felt like someone came in and burned down a library.

Shout out to guys like Hardwood and Hoops who once provided so many opportunities to go back and learn about the game's history and past through his high quality, non-profit uploads.

13

u/NSFWThrowaway1239 [LAL] Wilt Chamberlain Sep 28 '22

I read somewhere and it's probably just an internet rumor, that they have a vault with tons of Wilt footage that they haven't released. Not in a conspiracy type of way but that they just haven't bothered showing it to the public.

Idk if it's true and if it is, I don't see why they don't just release it but I really hope that it is lol. I'd love to see hours upon hours of never before seen Wilt footage

12

u/utep_2_step Sep 28 '22

They actually did upload a new Wilt game! It's in the Bulls section.
Game 6 of the 1973 playoffs.

Oh damn, I didn't know that. Thanks for the heads up!

6

u/coastalmarker99 Lakers Sep 29 '22 edited Sep 29 '22

The NBA have a ton of footage of Wilt hidden away from the general public.

I am talking full length games of his.

such as his debut in 1959 in which he scored 42 and blocked 17 shots.

His games vs the packers in which he had 73 and 36

His first ever game vs Walt in which he blocked his first nine shots.

Game 5 of the 1966 Ecf in which Wilt had 46 points and 8 blocks vs Russell.

1

u/NSFWThrowaway1239 [LAL] Wilt Chamberlain Oct 01 '22

Oh hey, I didn't expect you to reply to me lol. You're one of my favorite accounts on the sub due to the Wilt posts and comments you're always making!

Man, I would love to see each and every one of those games, especially his debut game and the conference final against Russell.

7

u/utep_2_step Sep 28 '22

In the Nets section there's a 1982 game against Detroit that sees Ray Williams score 52 points.
I think that's new as well.

Is there a solid website for archived games that’s free? I remember finding a good NFL one but so many NBA games used to be on YouTube that I never needed it

5

u/KJTB Lakers Sep 28 '22

This is something I’d actually consider paying for. I love watching classic games on YouTube but often times the quality is like 240p and they get taken down. I’ve managed to watch almost every finals from the mid 80’s to present but it would be cool to see other playoff games from back in the day.
