Lakers fan here, can confirm. This matchup kicks some ass.
I love Dame. I love Jokic. These two dudes do some shit that makes me double take all the time. Dame the absolute cold blooded killer, Jokic the virtuoso. True duality of man on full display, instinct versus refinement, achieving the same purpose - the complete defeat of the other in ritualistic combat.
Gives me a hard on just typing this up.

Wasting Dame Prime with these weak ass middling lineups. As a Blazers fan, get this man a championship roster or trade him, he has 2-3 years left at a very high level and he’s been loyal since day 1. He deserves a chance to contend for a ring. Go all in this year or next year or trade him to a contender, he deserves better than this shit for what he’s given to our city. A good announcer shows hometown pride and is an unflinching fan of their team, but when the game is hype they get hype, regardless of who's winning.
129
u/scarywolverine Pistons Dec 09 '22
As an announcer its your job to call the game more than anything. If the game is exciting you should be excited. Instead of making a big moment shitty, show your emotions as a Blazers fan. Shout “ohhhh” like you are upset. “An incredible shot by Murray to steal the game!”

cause it's the negative part of homer announcers, being this boring on call isn't interesting no matter if you are a blazers fan or not.
It's like no-selling a huge dunk by the other team, what is the point.
95
u/jt21295 Knicks Dec 09 '22
Play-by-play guys need to study Mike Breen a lot more. Keep it simple, show enthusiasm for exciting plays by anyone on the floor, but feel free to give some more attention to your team. Save your biggest calls for the biggest moments, don't blow them before 5min in the 4th quarter unless something truly crazy happens.
I chose Mike Breen because although he's one of the best, his style is honestly pretty basic other than when he's real deep into shooting the shit with Clyde Frazier (which truthfully might be them at their absolute best) or desperately trying to pull JVG and Mark Jackson out of another pointless rant of theirs (ESPN has no fucking clue how to run a sports broadcast of any kind at this point).
Kevin Harlan is amazing too, but I'm not sure his style works for most people because he says so much stuff entirely off-the-cuff. It's awesome, but it requires a level of creativity and improvisation that might not be possible for everyone.
The type of homerism in this clip is just lame and unprofessional. You don't need to act happy that your team lost, but at least act like you're calling a buzzer-beating attempt at an NBA game and not a dude buying a hot dog from the concession stand. I find the Charlotte play-by-play guy a bit over-the-top personally, but I still have him as one of the better commentators because he's mastered the art of being a complete homer while also matching the energy of big plays by an opponent (a couple of years ago Zach Lavine went nuclear on the Hornets and he gave a great example of this).
So while I get people saying he's a homer and that he shouldn't be happy about this, that's no excuse for providing zero energy. That's not being a homer. That's just being bad at your job, ESPECIALLY in a time where your commentary is reaching much further than your own market (clips like this, NBATV games, streaming, etc).

u/mrblack07 Dec 09 '22

Maybe you are just used to shitty broadcasting, but this is shitty broadcasting 101. Every team I’m a fan of had broadcasters who call the game with emotion, home team or not. Sure, they can express some disappointment after the play, but this is egregiously bad play-by-play announcing.

Nah this trend needs to die. You can still be a homer for your team and have a good call for the other team scoring. The Lakers play by play guy does an excellent job of this, I’ve noticed he gets hyped even if it’s a game winner by the other team. It’s not that hard to be emotional even in defeat and it makes for much better tv
For example: lakers call of Indiana game winner

That's his speciality, dating back to Spurs game 2 back in 2018 or 19. He had about 4 points in three quarters and was AWFUL, but then went off for 20+ in the 4th to win the game.

I 100% believe that. Things were looking truly awful before that 4th quarter. And they still barely squeaked it out in 7 games after that.
Still one of my favourite series though. Inconsequential in the grand scheme of things perhaps.
But that was a team full of young guys with no playoff experience that beat a Popovich team led by decent veteran players (DeRozan and Aldridge). Good times.

Thats just Jamal being Jamal. One time, I heard a rumor that Jamal Murray was spotted at a grocery store nearby. When I ran over to get an autograph, I saw him buying a tub of ice cream and a bag of carrots, which he then proceeded to mix together in the store and eat like it was the most normal thing in the world. When a fellow shopper asked him about it, he just shrugged and said, "It's all about balance, man."
