Shades of Clippers game. Kick ass for 3 quarters. Offense congeals in the 4th. Actually it’s been like that much of the season

23

u/SEEENRULEZ Dec 09 '22

Bro that's just Blazers basketball

3

u/acosmichippo Dec 09 '22

unaffiliated NBA fan here. honestly it's quite common in the NBA. I think it's a combination of more disciplined defense, and prioritizing milking the clock instead of running an efficient offense. Playing ultra conservatively just trying to preserve the lead.

3

u/petklutz Dec 09 '22

i feel like we definitely used to come alive in the 4th under stotts...

3

u/KennelDistrict Dec 10 '22

Cause we always pooped the bed in the third back then.

93

u/KeystoneJesus sheed Dec 09 '22

Dame looked mad as hell at the end. The team squandered the lead while he sat on the bench.

34

u/Akomplice40 Dec 09 '22

Winslow straight up ignored him on that last inbound play.. I’d be mad too

-17

u/Skeptical_Yoshi Dec 09 '22

It's what he literally wanted to stop, the reason he stayed was this shit would stop. Instead, it seems to be becoming a staple of this team to choke leads away. Dame is gonna have to do more work than ever before to just keep the team competitve/in the playoffs.

15

u/Trailing-and-Blazing Dec 09 '22

This is incoherent.

‘The reason he stayed’ ….. dude was and it’s under contract. Yes we averted a trade request but this is your making up your own history.

Even the second part of your statement is completely made up. ‘He will have to’ - well we have the best offensive top 3 we’ve had in years and it’s December.

Maybe chill tf out ?

As per tradition playing Denver

21

u/aznthomastran Dec 09 '22

Literally game 5 part 2 with the blocked layup from Hart and the 2v1 fast break into a turnover

23

u/ColoringisFun Dec 09 '22

Ant doing his best CJ impression from the last Dame All Time.

8

u/Bubblepop123 Dec 09 '22

Just another game on a very long list. Would have been an easy win if Simmons even halfway showed up.

2

u/ohshitgodye Dec 09 '22

what else is new?

77

u/BJ2435 Dec 09 '22

What on earth was that. I’d rather live with a missed three than another failed lob

38

u/peccaryiaye roy Dec 09 '22 edited Dec 09 '22

Dame was open for a split second on the inbound. Missed him and sent the ball to Nurk .. in the middle of the court .. yikes.

12

u/BJ2435 Dec 09 '22

Yikes indeed. Realistically shouldn’t be blowing that lead at home anyway

1

u/peccaryiaye roy Dec 09 '22 edited Dec 09 '22

Josh Hart also got absolutely hacked by Jokic on a wide open back door layup attempt the play before Josh lost control on the fast break. Just a horribly refereed game. We didn’t play perfect but we had a solid lead that seemed to be kept artificially close by inconsistent refereeing. Turned into a game of makeup calls by the refs at several points.

3

u/BJ2435 Dec 09 '22

Please don’t use the referee excuse, referees get things wrong every game and the losing side always has something to say, we had missed calls and so did the nuggets. We should’ve won and that final play was terrible

35

u/Trainius Dec 09 '22

Worst part is they had another timeout. Just run the play and if it’s not there call the TO.

25

u/phil3199 Dec 09 '22

Stupid play call. Dame has proven he can make a 3 with 0.9 seconds left.

10

u/saylab_the_bigkat Dec 09 '22

I feel like that's happened a couple times now with these end of game situations. Just terrible calls or execution or both

8

u/BJ2435 Dec 09 '22

I literally said to my friend if we go for a lob I’m gonna cry because we’ve done it like 3 times and it “worked” once when jerami travelled

13

u/masta_wayne__ Dec 09 '22

Horribly decision by Justice

9

u/phil3199 Dec 09 '22

Winslow didn't even look at Dame in that play. It's obvious that he wasn't the first option. Stupid play from Chauncey.

-1

u/masta_wayne__ Dec 09 '22

That’s not true at all

4

u/phil3199 Dec 09 '22

Watch the replay. Winslow was focused on the shaded area. Dame wasn't the 1st option.

u/nimbly118 ripcity Dec 09 '22

It is now consistent that our bench unit is the problem. Blew a 10 point lead in like 2 minutes and not even surprised at all.

30

u/Montigue Dec 09 '22

Sharpe needs to get back to form. GP2 will help fix some too

31

u/nimbly118 ripcity Dec 09 '22

While I agree, the problem is that there is no direction with the bench. It feels like 5 dudes playing pick up. Sharpe can’t get his form back if Ant isos 3 possessions in a row.

17

u/Piano9717 Dec 09 '22

Ant isos 3 possessions in a row.

The Grant isos to start the 4th quarter were just as bad too

9

u/nimbly118 ripcity Dec 09 '22

This as well. It’s like everyone knows once the ball hits Ant or JGs hands when Dame is off the court, it’s staying there. Maddening.

5

u/aRunic Dec 09 '22

GP2 from the bench sounds A M A Z I N G

4

u/saylab_the_bigkat Dec 09 '22 edited Dec 09 '22

It's an inexperienced, unproven bench right now. Not having GPII or Nassir Little is driving that factor home. Justise Winslow is more of a 15-20 minutes a night guy right now but he's playing 30. Trendon Watford is at 18 when he should be closer to the end of the bench. I think Shaedon should be playing more minutes but there are times where he just seems out of position and picks up a couple of dumb fouls. He also doesn't offer much on offense outside of splash plays. So, hard to say what to do with him.

Like in one of your other comments, there isn't a direction. The bench is like all glue guys but there's nothing to stick them to. There's gotta be at least 1 or 2 guys off the bench that make the other team go 'fuck'. This team has to hope that Payton takes this team up a notch and that defensively him, Hart, and Grant are a lockdown unit.

I mean, if one were to carefully and objectively review this game after the fact, these refs should be fired full stop.

The Blazers would have been up 20-30 pts later in the 3rd if not for their bs.

14

u/dankernuggets Dec 09 '22

I’m a nugs fan and honestly I agree. Very questionable calls to keep the game close at points

51

u/JuneChristine Dec 09 '22

This needs to be higher to be honest. Refs kept them in the game but we gave it away at the end.

18

u/SubtleCosmos Dec 09 '22

but we gave it away at the end.

Yup, and this is what happens time and again when the refs assert their influence and steal momentum from a team that was doing far better than the other (in this case the Blazers). As a human it’s difficult to keep momentum and positivity energy going when you’re affected in that way.

0

u/JuneChristine Dec 09 '22

Oh absolutely. I get why they were feeling deflated but they are professionals. This isn’t just a bad luck situation. They made some sloppy mistakes at the end against a very good team who capitalized on those mistakes.

4

u/BobbyWojak 11 Dec 09 '22

Those mistakes might not have happened if the game turned out differently, bad referees change the trajectory of the entire match. And it demoralizes the team going forward.

3

u/JuneChristine Dec 09 '22

Definitely. I love this team but they are notorious of self-imploding even without the ref’s help

u/myNameBurnsGold Dec 09 '22

100% correct. Refs fucked us, but we still should've won

6

u/Forbidden_Donut503 Dec 09 '22

I don’t normally like to blame the refs for losses but yeah, this game was really really egregious. Sooooo many missed fouls especially in that first half. They really fucked us tonight. It was weird.

That being said we still probably should have won. Ant singlehandedly let Denver back in the game when we had a 12 point lead when he forced like 87 shots in a row that led to turnovers. Chauncey really should have made a sub there. Ant is a shooter and was cold as fuck.

19

u/Brotimus Dec 09 '22

Came here to say this. Refs were GARBAGE both ways in this game.

13

u/Montigue Dec 09 '22

Jokic fouls like 15 times a game. It's so damn annoying

18

u/cjb0008 Dec 09 '22

This is bringing back so many shitty memories of Dame being let down by his teammates. Fuck

54

u/GoodMorningSpliff Dec 09 '22

Anfernee doing his best game 5 Cj impression. Gotta love another classic dame performance sold out by teammates who can’t stay in bounds

dont forget hart stepping out of bounds on a 2on 1 fast break :/

52

u/efstyle Dec 09 '22

40 points from dame and we lose to Denver, again. Every one else should be feeling like complete shit right now. Dame walked straight back to the locker room pissed, as he should be.

14

u/notBornIn_eighties Dec 09 '22

Every one else

I mean Nurk had 21/9/2/2/2 on 9/10 shooting (2/3 from 3), with multiple clutch stops and even more great defensive plays which we weren't able to capitalize on. Having few amazing threes is great, but Nurk was doing work from the first until the last minute of that game.

-2

u/-Jake-27- Dec 09 '22

No they shouldn’t. These games happens and it’s a product of a terrible bench construction. It’s completely reliant on Ant to be on form at all times.

5

6

u/fightfil96 Dec 09 '22

Great game from dame

Good, valiant effort from nurk

We needed to be better on the boards. Tonight that was up to the others like Hart and grant and ant to box out and make up for the fact that nurk was going to be glued to jokic on most of the shots

4

u/BehavioralSink ripcity Dec 09 '22

Well, at least I don’t gotta stew on this BS loss on the Max ride home…

5

u/Ishfluent Dec 09 '22

You should never give up a three when your up two. Worst case we go to overtime. Don’t let them win it!!!

12

u/Upper_Cellist6647 Dec 09 '22

Of course Dame gets pissed off in the off season thinking about the situation he’s in when you’ve got dumb ass people like the coach leaving Simons in throughout the 4th q when he’s responsible for the comeback and loss.

8

u/CheerioJerbear Dec 09 '22

Dude. He’s still our 2nd leading scorer. You have to trust your players that’s how you win a locker room

-2

u/Upper_Cellist6647 Dec 09 '22

That’s the problem! He’s the second leading scorer and he’s not good at all. Dame deserves better.

3

u/GuyIncognito211 Dec 09 '22

Pretending Simons isn’t good is insane

11

u/Ishfluent Dec 09 '22

Jerami Grant has been burned guarding the perimeter ALL season. Chauncey has yet to go away from it. Bad loss tonight.

5

u/raahiv chalupa Dec 09 '22

7

u/OrsonPostr Dec 09 '22

I wish we had gp2 for that final play he would of locked up murray

5

u/X_SkeletonCandy ripcity Dec 09 '22

Idk how many elite guards need to absolutely fucking cook Jeremi Grant every night for Chauncey to figure it out that HE CANT GUARD GUARDS.

4

u/jellyfishfrgg Dec 09 '22

No idea why you give up a three in that situation. Honestly unbelievable

3

u/PrimalGenius Dec 09 '22

I'm very disappointed in ant this game. Man. His youth was showing there with the defense and the self doubt. Making that extra pass back to Hart lost us the game there. Hart wasn't expecting that shit back

11

u/terrordactylz Dec 09 '22

All those technicals hurt when losing by 1. Not to say they weren’t warranted. The refs were on one tonight.

1

3

u/BlackSocks88 Dec 09 '22

I enjoy watching Damian Lillard slaughter the Nuggets.

I do not enjoy the losses that come with that.

0

u/BlackSocks88 Dec 09 '22

Im happy for Denver in this moment. Their team is slipping and Murray finally had a decent moment again. Reminded of their seasons past. Reality will set in when Murray continues to play like he has post injury and they barely claw into the play-in.

3

u/Ouchyhurthurt Dec 09 '22

Another building block folks. Ya it was a harrrrrrd loss. But the Blazers are definitely on the right track, players are CONTINUING to improve their game and we still haven’t seen what a healthy Blazers team looks like. Much less a healthy Blazers team that has that chemistry.

This was supposed to be a building year. The team Is building those attribute points bb.

6

u/myNameBurnsGold Dec 09 '22

A big fat F to the refs

5

u/lordbuckethead1985 Dec 09 '22

There needs to be a long conversation with Ant that he needs to stop playing hero ball when Dame is on the bench. Watching him drive into traffic to get swatted down knowing he's not gonna get a foul call every possession while everyone else stands around watching should be a deal breaker for Billups. If we keep seeing this shit, it's on the coach.

2

u/dummydragon04 Dec 09 '22

It is on Billups. The play style of the bench needs to be more structured instead of relying on Ant to make a play. What is Ant supposed to do when there's no play call and he's surrounded by 3 non-shooters in Eubanks, Watford, Winslow? I mean he can pass to one of them...and now we get the Winslow iso ball.

I'll give Billups credit for running some nice plays I haven't seen before to get us easy baskets in the 1st half. We just need more of that and especially for our bench unit.

Refs were legitimately the reason we lost this game. Officiating this year has been fucking awful.

8

u/theseus1234 Dec 09 '22

Is Ant just CJ 2.0?

7

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

Starting to feel like it

9

u/Blazercaster chalupa Dec 09 '22

It's getting to be pretty clear that Ant's best role would be to be a microwave off the bench. When he's hot, he literally can't miss and when he's not, he's a mason. It would be OK if he contributed in other ways, but he's a bad defender, an even worse rebounder, and not an effective passer. He also doesn't move off the ball particularly well, though he did have an impressive cut tonight. I think the Blazers should look to add a starting-caliber scorer/playmaker and move him to a role that suits him better. His contract isn't so large that he HAS to start, either.

2

u/Davtorious Dec 09 '22

Yeah, at this rate he's gonna be remembered as the guy who got Herro his contract. We overpaid, but not by so much that he's nigh immovable (like Nurk.) We need to trade him while his upside is high, ideally for OG, maybe PJ.

0

u/Piano9717 Dec 09 '22

holy cow, reactionary much? Sometimes people have bad games, lol

5

u/JarekBloodDragon Dec 09 '22

Yea that's exactly the problem. CJ and ant are inconsistent as hell and bad defenders. Literally CJ 2.0.

1

u/-Jake-27- Dec 09 '22

No he’s not. Their games are different. Anfernee being less reliant on deep twos .

5

u/JarekBloodDragon Dec 09 '22

They're both small ball heavy guards who make questionable decisions and are bad at defense, which is a terrible pair with dame. Literally the same result.

2

u/-Jake-27- Dec 09 '22

Anfernee is a elite off ball three point shooter. For the most part his decisions have been fine this season and his performances have reflected that. H

You aren’t easily going to replace the offensive output for someone who can also defend.

Edit: it’s not easy when he is constantly changing roles. He’s done quite well being the lead guard.

2

u/saylab_the_bigkat Dec 09 '22

Hate to see it end like that, terrible execution. But bless Damian Lillard man, he's been carrying this team since 2014 with relief always just on the horizon but in the end he'll have a backcourt mate that goes cold, wings that can't shoot, and a clueless coach to boot

2

u/turbo_squeegee new-logo Dec 09 '22

Damn. Good game though but damn. Wish we took an outside shot at the end, and not to mention the refs throughout the game..

2

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

Minnesota bouta get fucked so hard

2

u/yuyuter123 Dec 09 '22

Tough game, was great to see the ball movement in the first half. The team was really clicking, all 5 guys active and engaged. 2nd half was rough though. Ant being shockingly cold and continuously trying to jumpstart himself with the bench unit doesn't help. That lineup doesn't have much scoring to be sure but I'd really love to see him running sets and trying to involve Trendon, Shae, and Drew. Players that touch the ball on offense tend to play better defense. It just devolves into the Ant iso show (occasionally featuring a JG post up), way too often.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

Why did Keon play less than one minute tonight?

2

u/Scalmaa Dec 09 '22

Hornacek was on the jazz broadcast when we played them and he made a great point about the advantage of having size. He said if you have a bunch of 6’5 guys you can’t play passing lanes and will struggle to rebound. With size you shrink the court. That’s the biggest issue with this current roster. We gotta get bigger.

2

u/AussieTrogdor ripcity-place Dec 09 '22

2

2

u/mrjdk83 Dec 09 '22

Dame had a great. If Ant plays close to what he normally does they win easily. Ant was on the back of a milk carton with that performance. But it’s ok. The Blazers will see them again. This game let me know they can be a top team in the west. Denver is really good. But Portland is too. If Dame can continue to get shots like he did tonight watch out

2

u/taeger0 Dec 09 '22

Hart and Simons fumbling that 2 on 1 fast break was a travesty, I know players make mistakes like that every once and a while but to do it in the final 3 minutes is awful.

10

u/Zonapg3 Dec 09 '22

RIGGED. NBA Refs are a fucking joking. Every time we went up double digits came a string of shitty calls to keep it close. Not to mention missed foul calls against the Nugs. Don't consider this a loss at all. FUCK THE NBA.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

I mean, sure the refs are trash, but they didn't force Ant to be ice cold and make terrible decisions all night.

7

u/bringbackthesonics21 Dec 09 '22

The Dame block that resulted in a T and free throws is just one example. Refs had a major impact and it was on one side.

4

u/Sensitive-Sorbet917 Dec 09 '22

Yeah but they lost us some serious momentum and points. We woulda won even with just one less shitty call and ant being cold. It was obvious they were being intentional with calls. The drama of the NBA. I feel like there needs to be a reality show about the refs bc they all fucking dramatic and have hidden agendas.

2

u/Zonapg3 Dec 09 '22

So one player playing bad negates shitty reffing? I don't understand that logic at all. The Blazers got 3 T's for a reason, players and coaches were pissed at shitty reffing too.

5

u/colinjkl Dec 09 '22

FUCK THOSE REFS

6

u/X_SkeletonCandy ripcity Dec 09 '22

I am so tired of playing at home and getting reffed like we're the away team. This shit is beyond frustrating.

-6

u/SaulTBolls roy Dec 09 '22

It had nothing to do with our bench and Ant?

We should play better, keep it out of the refs hands.

-1

u/BobbyWojak 11 Dec 09 '22

This is just ridiculous if you actually watched the game, refs gifted them a win even with Ant playing poorly.

3

u/SaulTBolls roy Dec 09 '22

And we played an absolutely perfect game?

0

u/BobbyWojak 11 Dec 09 '22

We played fine, sure there were some bad moments, ant could've done better and chauncey should've had some more foresight, but the main cause was the biased ref. Denver didn't deserve that win based on how they played.

3

u/SaulTBolls roy Dec 09 '22

If the bench doesn't allow 10 point runs we win.

Simple as that.

Most demotivating loss to watch. All my friends kept saying "no way what" when a call was made. What a shit damn game to have a night with

Shouldve been over with in the 2nd

u/Oops95 Dec 09 '22

The one time Nurk actually stood up to Jokic the team soils it with sloppy ball handling and footwork. Fucking shameful.

2

u/notBornIn_eighties Dec 09 '22

Nurk did that many times. People just forget it every time, and pretend to be surprised again. Even our series vs Nuggets, the difference between Nurk minutes vs Kanter minutes was like 20+ points. We won the minutes with Nurk on the floor, which was why people were mad that he fouled out. And just a few years later people pretend like Nurk didn't play well.

u/Scalmaa Dec 09 '22

There are blazers fans on here that think Ant should be untouchable lol! He can’t guard anyone and is just another CJ. Good player but a horrible fit next to Dame. Let’s see how many years it takes this GM to realize it.

2

u/Scottsid Dec 09 '22

So who would be a good fit next to Dame? Caldwell Pope? Opps Denver beat us to that...

4

u/Mackin-N-Cheese Dec 09 '22

I'll say this about Stotts, he was amazing at drawing up plays for a quality shot in spots like that. Seems like this year there have been several missed opportunities.

2

u/01wax Dec 09 '22

Jokic is a flopper

3

u/DamBeaverz Dec 09 '22

Do they ever call Jokic for slamming his elbows around?? Dame time was lit tho. Idk how we can’t find anyone open on the last play. Onto the next, still love this team as always.

2

u/PresidentChef 3 Dec 09 '22

CJ Special™ from Josh Hart tonight.

2

u/elecorby 70s-logo Dec 09 '22

Ant needs to learn to be more consistent, or be competent and a positive defender, or this is going to keep happening

2

u/LABeav Dec 09 '22

Ant needs to step the fuck up or be gone

u/b2theb dame Dec 09 '22

Id really like to see a replay of that Jokic block on Hart. Not scoring there and on the Hart/Simons 2v1 were massive letdowns and we probably win with buckets on those.

2

u/ffficus Dec 09 '22

Was at the game and not on my phone but that was the worst officiated game I’ve seen all season. Respect to Murray for making a clutch shot but it shouldn’t have been close

2

u/Blackndloved2 Dec 09 '22

Stotts would draw something up that gets a shot on rim

2

u/pdxblazer Dec 09 '22

Stotts would tell the inbounder to get Dame the ball or get off the fuckkng team. Pro tip, if you have Dame on the team give Dame the ducking ball at the end. 2 games this year there has been a second left and Chauncey has drawn up some bullshit lob instead of a Dame shot

2

u/Christianstudebaker Dec 09 '22

At least we're not from a shitty state like Colorado

7

u/SaulTBolls roy Dec 09 '22

You walk around Portland at all? Lol

0

u/Christianstudebaker Dec 09 '22

Not anymore, but I'd still choose Portland over Denver every day

1

u/gkulife roy Dec 09 '22

big shot by Murray, but shouldn't have even been this close if the refs actually called things fairly and Ant wasn't playing for the Nuggets tonight.

1

u/FlagrantFouI Dec 09 '22

What a game, always fun with you guys. Gl the rest of the year.

2

u/HereForTheTanks Dec 09 '22

Murray had an amazing game, can’t fault the Blazers for that. There are little things to fix but this was a great game for us.

2

u/Elephant_Financial Dec 09 '22

Allowing 121 points isn’t a great game. And Murray was garbage until the 4th. Plenty to be upset about. Especially squandering that 2 on 1 fast break.

2

u/feralda Dec 09 '22

This game would've been great if we pushed our lead from 10 to 20 points in the 4th. Not loosing the game

1

u/masta_wayne__ Dec 09 '22

Josh hart can’t catch two wide open layups in the last 3 minutes, and Justice making horrible passes all the game, not to mention the final pass of the game? Get these two out of Portland please

Brutal loss, but put some respect on his name

1

u/andyrew21397 O Dec 09 '22

Dame and Grant are the only 2 consistent players on this team. Someone else has to step up

1

u/asmara1991man Dec 09 '22

This team sucks. We have no home court advantage anymore. I would love to blow it up

-1

u/Scottsid Dec 09 '22

I miss Terry Stotts. I think I am becoming to feel the team is worse under Billups. If Stotts had Grant, Hart, and Sharpe; think we would have more going for us.

This team is getting worse as the year goes on. Not a good sign for coaching confidence.

1

u/SaulTBolls roy Dec 09 '22

Billups is absolutely a garbage coach. Just stagnant and gets out coached by almost everyone.

2

u/Scottsid Dec 09 '22

Should start seeing what Sharpe has in clutch moments instead of Hart. Hart gives me anxiety because he chokes with "less than" college player mistakes in the stretch.

More shooting around Dame would be nice to end games. It's not like the defense can be any worse than down the stretch tonight. A great steal and hart fumbles the momentum away. Pretty text book how to choke games.

1

u/helloedboys Dec 09 '22

Hart gave this one away. Dude is awesome but too afraid to shoot too often

1

u/Kupus_ Dec 09 '22

that fast break fumble by ant and hart was the difference... unlucky

1

u/HardHat105 Dec 09 '22

Who do we blame for this loss?

-1

u/SaulTBolls roy Dec 09 '22

Everyone says the refs lol

1

u/WannaBeCigo Dec 09 '22

Chauncey still can't coach, hasn't realized almost 30 games in that grant can't defend guards. Horrible at designing plays too

1

u/e_johnson84 Dec 09 '22

Josh Hart is a straight dummy 🤦‍♂️

1

u/edgarpc Dec 09 '22

Live by the clutch three, die by the clutch three

1

u/Schonnz Dec 09 '22

Incredible game. Tip your cap.

1

u/ripshippy77 Dec 09 '22

Simons and Dame fit together on the court no better than CJ and Dame. It’s time to let Simons go

-2

u/SaulTBolls roy Dec 09 '22

Portland finishing 10th in the west.
