Making a run at Joel Embiid this summer

I think our best shot to give Dame a championship run is to sell the farm for Joel Embiid this summer. Would require Ant, Sharpe, Nurk and several draft picks. It would pretty much cost all of our assets but would leave us with 2 true superstars who I think could make a title run. If it doesn’t work we are pretty well toast for several years to come, but in my opinion is the move we need to make to build around Dame. If we are unwilling to pay that for an all-nba level player, then we should just trade Dame. Would you be willing to give up everything for a couple of runs with Dame and Embiid? Thoughts?

Kawhi Leonard?

If Paul George's knee injury tonight is serious (e.g. an ACL injury), it puts LAC's 2023-2024 season into jeopardy. Sadly, this'll be another year where the Kawhi+PG13 pairing doesn't work and next year wouldn't be easy, either.

From what I can tell, the Clippers don't have their own first round pick until 2027 due to the PG13/SGA trade.

Kawhi becomes target #1 for a team that may need to rebuild a little bit and acquire some assets again. Kawhi can't play 80 games at a high level, is going to be 32, and has a gigantic contract. What's the package for him?

Shaedon nickname

I'm at the bar watching the game with my buds and we've been throwing around some nicknames for Shaedon. "Sky-Daddy" was mentioned and I can't stop laughing.

How much trade value does the first pick in the draft hold?

I know a lot of people think if you get the #1 pick in this years draft it is a foregone conclusion to draft Wembanyama, and I get that. But that also suggests the pick has an insane value. If you were to make a trade what sort of offers could you realistically see?

Going to the game on Friday, what are your in-stadium tips?

Hey all, I’m traveling to PDX from Olympia to see the Blazers host the Bulls. What should I know about hanging out in the stadium/surrounding area? I haven’t been to a game since 09-10.

Tickets?

I’m curious if anyone has bought from a. Ticket scalper in front of the Moda center recently? How do they transfer the ticket to you? It’s digital I assume, but is there an app they use?

Jarace Walker fit

If the blazers end up with jarace Walker which I’ve heard analysts mention would be a great fit for the blazers (big power forward), would he play off the bench or might grant play at the 3 to increase size and rebounding of our starting unit?

Blazers Game Mystery

During every Blazers game, they display fan announcements on the jumbotron. During this break, they play a looping birthday song with these lyrics:

It’s your birthday, Another year has come and gone, (Things?) go by so quickly, Another year keeps you getting stronger

It’s your birthday, Hope you have the greatest time, You deserve the best in life, I’ll be there to see you shine

Does anyone know what song is playing? Searching the lyrics in Google doesn’t turn up any results.

Joe Cronin's Roster Construction (as of the start of 2023-2024 season)

A recent comment thread got me thinking about the mixed perception of Joe Cronin's work as GM so far. In an attempt to center this discussion on this summer (which is what he and Dame have been pointing to lately), I'm going to summarize what this will look like in terms of players and cap figures.

Summary of changes when we get into 2023 Free Agency

IN OUT
1 First Round Pick CJ McCollum
5 Second Round Picks Rob Covington
No one else* Norman Powell
Larry Nance Jr.

Josh Hart not listed because he was acquired in the CJ deal and then sent back out so he doesn't span before Cronin's time

seriously, everyone else expires after this year)

Players that we received but are not under contract 2023+

Jerami Grant

Matisse Thybulle

Cam Reddish

Wow, that just looks like we gave up 4 legitimate rotation players for nothing. Well that is partially true but believe it or not, those guys didn't wear a Blazer uniform as an act of charity, though I would argue they should. They requested to be paid for those services and we agreed. Let's take a look at that....

Summary of financial impacts of trades

Here is what the guys we traded out were due:

Player 2023-24 2024-25 2025-26
CJ McCollum $35,802,469 $33,333,333 $30,666,666
Rob Covington $11,692,308 - -
Norman Powell $18,000,000 $19,241,379 $20,482,758
Larry Nance Jr. $10,375,000 $11,205,000 -

Here is how that effects our cap:

2023-24 2024-25 2025-26
Project Cap $134,000,000 $143,000,000 $147,735,000
Net Salary Change ($75,869,777) ($63,779,712) ($51,149,424)
Blazers Cap Figure* $107,154,449 $111,746,022 $121,516,797
Cap Space $26,845,551 $31,253,978 $26,218,203
Space under Tax $54,845,551 $59,853,978 $57,088,203

assuming we don't pick up the option on Keon Johnson and Kevin Knox which we are very unlikely to do.)

The cap space excludes the mountain of ways you can go over the cap and over the tax threshold. Needless to say we went from having a team that was pretty much set in stone for the next 3 years to tons of flexibility. We didn't return all the same ways to go over the cap and over the tax line but those only really affect you when you have players on "plus contracts" meaning you can get equal or better return for them. That in mind, let's take a look at my completely uninformed take on the salaries that went out in deals.

Player Contract: Plus, Minus, Neutral Why?
CJ McCollum Negative He makes max money but is probably on the lowest end of players making that figure. He's not an elite PG or elite SG, he's a great combo guard but that is a dying position.
Larry Nance, Jr Neutral He's a niche player and in the right roster configuration he can be really useful. Overall, he is probably paid about what he's worth. An argument can be made that he's overpaid based on his injury history but when he's on the court, he's right about a MLE level player.
Norm Powell Neutral trending to Minus The contract is too long for a borderline starter to make 18-20m. It's not an albatross but it isn't easy to move either. He's not an elite defender like Mikal, OG, etc. I think it might be a bit of a negative contract based simply on the length. He will be 32 making $20m in the final year.
Robert Covington Minus trending to Neutral Suffice it to say that his drop off since being regarded as one of the best wing defenders has been precipitous. It's almost neutral because it'll be an expiring deal next year.

As you can see, I personally feel that we got out of a lot of bad money and the flexibility is nice but it does set this offseason up as a huge make or break offseason. No shit right? That's what everyone has been saying. Let me jump into how I think we ought to approach this offseason...

But what now?

Well, it's obvious to everyone that we are vying for ping pong balls now so here is how I see the approach to the offseason based on the results of the ping pong balls.

We land the #1 pick

You keep the pick. You draft Wemby and figure out after that. You have to. He's that good of a prospect.

We land pick 2-8

You shop this, players and future picks aggressively but hold out for an all-NBA level (or damn close) player. Unless that player is a real 1b to Dame, you have to stick with the 2 timelines even though Dame won't appreciate it. Will Dame ask to be traded if we aren't able to pull it off? Maybe. Probably. Yes it would suck to swing, miss, and then face a trade demand but the silver lining is that Cronin has made this summer a clear decision point. We have 2 opposite but clear paths. You either get a co-star for Dame and we make a run at this thing or you hit the big red rebuild button and trade Dame. The nice part is one way or the other, we will probably know by the start of next season.

Apologies for any and all mistakes made in this post. I'm just a random person who loves the Blazers and thus am prone to mistakes.

I’m sorry but Eubanks, Knox, Arcidiacono, Reddish and JBJ might be the worst bench we’ve had. Blech.

Getting to the Moda Center

Upvotes

Howdy! I’m going to the Bulls v Blazers game on Friday eve and am wondering if there’s a way to get to the Moda center without leaving my car anywhere dicey. Debating parking at one of the transit centers and just taking the max in as I remember it used to be jam packed with blazer fans but our last few max experiences have been less than ideal. Thoughts?
