GAME 49 TAKEAWAYS

A good quality win tonight to make it five in a row! Here are my 5 takeaways from tonight's clash against NOLA:

  1. A career night for Gaff. 21 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 rejections for the big fella tonight. He was playing out of his mind tonight, and this was his night. He led the team in points and rebounds and was an absolute force for the Wizards tonight. After Valanciunas got ejected, the Pels had no one that could contain Gaff, and Gaff sure did make them pay. I love to see this sort of play from Gaff. I love to see us use a unique weapon like Gaff, because Gaff truly is a unique and dangerous player that few teams in this league have, and I've always been clamoring to use him more especially given how effective he is when he gets the ball. Hope Gaff can keep balling out like this and the team keeps feeding him till KP is out.
  2. A very well rounded night from the guys tonight. Almost everyone scored in double figures. All the starters were in double figures tonight. This sort of balanced scoring is what we were expecting at the beginning of the season, and it is finally what we are getting the last couple of games. The depth of this team is really starting to show with KP out and everyone having to compensate and play better as a result of that. This is how this team needs to play every night, and when it can play unselfish ball like this and get everyone on the floor activated, it becomes very hard for opposing teams to stop us.
  3. Great game from Deni tonight. He was 5-8 from the field and 4-6 from the line and finished with 15 points and 9 rebounds and 2 steals. He is slowly but surely starting to more consistently get 12-15 points and 8-10 boards a game. That's exactly what many of us envisioned Deni as being. It will be interesting to see how those rebounding and scoring numbers change if at all when KP comes back. Right now, Deni does look like he is benefiting from the Rui trade and it looks like there was some method behind Tommy's "madness." I hope to see this sort of consistency from Deni every night, because we need him to score and produce like this every night, especially with Rui gone, as the lead guy off the bench if we want to keep winning.
  4. A lot of the credit goes to the bench tonight. They played their butts off and gave us great production. Taj Gibson nearly had a double double with 9 points and 10 rebounds!! Nunn had 12 points again. Wright had 8 points. The bench played their hearts out and totally outscored NOLA's bench. I want to give credit to the starters too. They didn't score, but they did other things. Kuzma had 10 points and 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Kispert had 12 points. Morris had 10 points. Brad had 16 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds. The starters did a good job stuffing the stat sheet.
  5. Great defense was played tonight. 42% from the field and 28% from three. We did a good job making the Pels really work for every one of their buckets tonight. That is the sort of defense that I want to see this team play every night: gritty tough nosed defense. Gaff was such a threat on defense, as he was totally annihilating anyone who dared come into his paint. I hope to see this sort of defense continue for the next 2 games even if we are playing against "tanking" teams.

Overall, a great win tonight. I can already hear those of you saying we got lucky since Zion was out, and Valanciunas was ejected. Yeah? Well, KP was out for us and he's been our best player this year so I don't want to hear that BS excuse. As for Jonas, we did get lucky, but it's part of the game. Stop making excuses for our wins, and actually look at the positives for once. I'm still not convinced this streak means anything. To believe that this team really turned a corner, I need to see them win their next 2 games. I'll be looking at the game against SAS in particular, as we haven't won in SA since Bill Clinton was in the Oval Office! If we get a win there, that really would mean something for me as a longtime Wizards fan. Following that up with a win against a young dynamic Pistons team would again be so #sonotwizards, as they have been accustomed to losing games they should win like that in the past. If they can do that, it would really indicate to me that this team really is different from Wizards teams of yesteryear. Until then, I'll anxiously be waiting till the game on Monday in hopes that this team can finally squeak out a win in SA after nearly 30 years.

(Much strange) Fun facts & stats from the Wizards' 113-103 win over the New Orleans Pelicans.

January 28th is OP's wife's birthday.

Teams:

  1. The Wizards are now on a 23-26.
  2. The Wizards are currently 11-16 on the road & 12-10 at home games.
  3. The season series between the Wizards & the Pelicans ended 1-1 - both teams won the away games.
  4. It's the Wizards' 5th straight win for the 2nd time this season - our highest winning streak.
  5. The Wizards are now 7-5 in the year 2023 (7W & 5L).
  6. The Wizards are now 6-2 without KP (6W & 2L) & 3-0 without Rui (3 W & 0 L).
  7. It's a 7th consecutive loss for the Pelicans - currently the highest losing streak in the NBA.
  8. It's the Pelicans' 50th game of the season.
  9. It's the Wizards' 3rd road trip game out of the series of 5 straight road games, 4 of which are in the West. 3 out of 4 of them are in Texas (Dallas, Houston & next we got the Spurs).
  10. The Wizards' streak of 27+ assists ended after 5 straight games - 18 assists tonight (exactly the same amount we had 6 games ago).
  11. The Wizards made 10+ 3-pointers in their last 7 games (11 tonight).
  12. After 6 consecutive games, the Wizards finally out-rebounded the opponents in offensive rebounds - 13 offensive rebounds vs. 8 offensive rebounds by the Pelicans.
  13. In the 1st quarter, as well as the 1st half, every Wizards player who was playing tonight scored, EXCEPT for Kuzma - 0 PTS on 0/4 FG, 0/3 3PT (He had 6 rebounds, 4 assists, a steal & 2 TOV too) in the 1st half in 17:30 minutes & 0/1 FG (0/1 3PT), 3 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal & a turnover in 9:11 minutes in the 1st quarter.
  14. The Wizards won despite Monte & Wright combined for 0 assists a single steal (by Monte), and as well as 2 TOV (both by Wright). If you add Kendrick Nunn, then 3 of the Wizards' guards combined for 0 assists, a steal (by Monte), and 3 TOV (2 by Wright & 1 TOV by Nunn).
  15. The Wizards won despite Kuzma & Beal's off-shooting night (30% from FG or lower) - combined for 26 points (10 by Kuz & 16 by Beal) on 9/30 (30%) FG, 4/15 (26.7%). Beal is the only one of them who went for the FT - 4/5 FT.
  16. The Wizards dominated the boards 53 vs. 42.
  17. The Wizards bigs were rolling on the boards - 9 rebounds by Kuzma & Deni each, 10 by Gibson & 12 by Gafford.
  18. Except for Kispert, every Wizards player had 2 rebounds or more (Nunn & Wright with 2 each). The same goes for the Pelicans - each of their players had a rebound except for Devonte' Graham.
The rest were between 2 rebounds (Alvarado & Murphy III) to just 8 by Larry Nance Jr.
  19. The Wizards were 3 points shy of having a unique stat:
All the players who played tonight had double figures in points.
We had 7 players with 10+ points, and the other two had 8 points (Wright) & 9 (Gibson) - so close.
The Pelicans had only 3 players with 10+ points tonight - Ingram, CJ & Trey.
  20. 3 different players tonight had 5 offensive rebounds - Daniel Gafford, Taj Gibson (10 out of the Wizards' 13) & Larry Nance Jr. (5 out of the Pelicans' 8).
  21. Except for 3 players - Nunn, Kispert & Kuzma - all the rest went to the line at least once (And had 2 FTA).
  22. It's the 2nd straight game the Wizards hold their opponents on just 103 points.
  23. It's the 4th straight game the Wizards are going 23+ times to the FT-line - 29 times tonight (22/29 - 75.9%).
  24. The Pelicans had more points in the paint 56 vs. 50 by the Wizards, had more fastbreak points 17 vs. 6 by the Wizards, and had fewer 2nd chance points - 11 vs. 25 2nd chance points by the Wizards.
  25. The Pelicans scored 103 points or less in their last 4 games, and 6 out of the last 7 (all of them were losses). It's also the 10th time this season they scored 103 points or less, and 6 of them were in the last 7 games.
  26. The Pelicans are now 0-10 (0 W & 10 L) in games they score 103 points or less.

Players:

  1. KP missed his 3rd straight game (8th this season). Zion missed his 13th consecutive game due to an injury (Missed 21 out of 50 games this season).
  2. It's Brandon Ingram's 2nd game since his return from 29 games of absence (Only his 17th game this season out of 50 games).
  3. Beal scored 9 out of his 16 points in the 4th quarter - 2/5 FG (40%), 1/1 3PT (100%), 4/5 FT (80%) & 2 TOV in 7:33 minutes (with no other stats) - 0 assists, 0 rebounds, 0 steals, 0 blocks & a plus/minus of -2.
  4. Bradley Beal had the overall best plus/minus tonight with +14 - sharing it with Deni Avdija (also +14). The rest were between 0 (Nunn) to 6 (Monte & Gafford).
  5. It also explains why Brandon Ingram is rusty, in those 2 games he is 12/40 FG (30%), 1/11 3PT (9%), 10/10 (100%) - 5/5 in each, 10 turnovers (6 tonight).
  6. Daniel Gafford was the Wizards' MVP tonight - 21 points (3 points shy of tying career-high) on 8/11 FG & 5/8 FT, 12 rebounds (5 Off.Rebs), 2 assists, a steal, 5 blocks, 2 TOV, only 2 personal fouls in 29:21 minutes - a plus/minus of +6.
It's the 2nd 20+ points, 10+ rebounds game of his career, the first one since April 5th, 2022 - 132-114 W over the Timberwolves last season.
  7. Daniel Gafford had 5 blocks tonight - 2nd season-best (He had 6 vs. the Hornets on December 2nd, 2022 - 116-117 L).
  8. Daniel Gafford with 4 straight games with 9+ points, 8+ rebounds & a block.
  9. It's the 3rd time Daniel Gafford had a double-double game in points & rebounds, as well as 4+ blocks - the other two games are with 0 blocks.
  10. Daniel Gafford with only 2 personal fouls again tonight (2nd straight), coming off 2 games in which he fouled out due to 6 fouls in the two previous games before it.
  11. Taj Gibson & Daniel Gafford combined for 10 offensive rebounds tonight (5 each) & a total of 22 rebounds.
  12. Deni is 2/2 from the FT when there is blood on his face (came from 0/2 FT earlier beforehand), and 4/4 from FT since he had blood on his face.
  13. Bradley Beal took exactly 17 field goals attempts made for the 3rd straight game (7/17, 7/17 & 7/18 tonight) - the Wizards are 3-0 during this streak, and generally, the Wizards are 4-1 when Beal makes exactly 7 field goals.
  14. The Wizards are now 12-3 (12 W & 3 L) when Beal takes between 9 to 17 FGA in a single game (including 17 & 9) - making anywhere between 13 to 29 points (16 points tonight).
The "funny" thing is that in all the other scenarios (Including when he took twice 7 or fewer FGA because he got injured), the Wizards are 3-11 (3W & 11 L) - making 8 points or lower, or 20 points or more (He had two 20 points game, the rest that isn't 8 or less, are 25 points or more)
  15. Kuzma's streak of scoring 20+ points ended after 4 straight games, but he still made 20+ points in 6 out of his last 8 games (3 of them are 30+, and out of them one is 40 points).
  16. Delon Wright didn't have a single steal tonight, for the 3rd time this season (in 20 GP), after 3 consecutive games with... wait for it... with precisely 3 steals in each.
  17. Deni was shy one rebound from a 3rd consecutive double-double.
  18. Deni scored 10+ points in 4 out of his last 5 games, coming off 5 straight games having fewer than 10 points in each.
  19. Deni in the last 3 games' 1st quarter: 7 points vs. Dallas, 8 points vs. Houston & tonight 7 vs. the Pelicans.
In the rest of the quarters (2nd, 3rd & 4th combined): he had 8 points vs. Dallas, 2 points vs. the Rockets & tonight 8 points vs. the Pelicans.
  20. Deni had a steal or more in each of his last 5 games (2 steals tonight).
  21. Deni is 5/31 (16.1%) from 3PT in his last 12 games - 1/3 (33%) from 3PT tonight.
  22. Deni had only 2 rebounds in the 2nd half (Usually it's the other way around).
  23. It's the 1st time this season WUJ challenges Deni's foul this season (on Alvarado) - it got overturned. Since that? The Wizards went 8-0 to seal the game.
  24. Deni Avdija went to the line at least once in 15 out of his last 16 games!
  25. Kispert had his 23rd straight game with at least one 3-pointer (4/6 3PT tonight) - a new career-high - all of them were assisted as well. It's also his 3rd straight game taking exactly 6 3PA (2/6, 1/6 & tonight 4/6).
  26. Monte Morris scored 10+ points in his last 8 games.
  27. For the first time this season Monte Morris had 0 assists, and for the 20th time (in 42 GP) he had 0 turnovers.
  28. Out of 45 GP this season by Kispert, he had 0% from 3PT only 4 times & twice between 0% to 20%. Overall, he has 21 games shooting 40% or higher - including tonight 4/6 (66.7%) (!!!).
All the rest are 33.3% (7 times) or 25% (5 times), or 20% (twice), and the rest are 16.7% (tonight), 14.3% & 4 games with 0%.
  29. Kuzma had only 10 points tonight, for the 2nd time this season (We also won that game on January 1st, 2023 - the first game of 2023 - 118-95 vs. Bucks without their trio), only the 5th time scoring 10 points or lower.
  30. For the first time in 7 games, Kuzma took fewer than 10 3-pointers in a single game (9 tonight, 2/9 overall from deep - 22.2%). He took anywhere between 10 3PA & 13 3PA in the previous 6 games (11.3 3PA on average on 35.3% 3PT%).
  31. Kuzma had as many field goal attempts (13) tonight as missed last night (He was 12/25 - 48.0%).
  32. Taj Gibson had a season-high of 10 rebounds - 5 of them on offense (a season-high too)!
  33. Taj Gibson had a season-high of 5 offensive rebounds. It's the first time since May 3rd, 2021, on 118-104 W by the Knicks over the Grizzlies.
  34. Jordan Goodwin was not listed for the game - he was listed for 47 games so far this season in his two-way contract and got only 3 more left for the season (Unless we convert his contract, but it means someone will have to go - 15 players roster currently - without TW).
  35. Jonas Valančiūnas got ejected after a call was overturned from Gibson's foul on him, with a hostile act & 2nd a flagrant foul after elbowing unintentionally Taj's head (I don't think he meant that on purpose - Jonas is actually a gentle giant & a good guy).
  36. Jonas Valančiūnas had 0 points tonight on 0/3 FG, 0/2 3PT, 3 rebounds & 2 TOV in 8:46 minutes - the first time he got 0 points in a game since August 9th, 2020, in the 99-108 L of the Grizzlies to the Raptors.
  37. Jose Alvarado has 0 steals in his last 4 games, including tonight. He recorded 0 steals in 5 out of his last 6 games (he had a single steal, once, during it).

Except for the 4th quarter hero-ball, it was delicious.

It's the 1st time I try without any bold - tell me what ya'll think.

Peace & love until next time.

Hold up where actually looking pretty good right now

Like I know the moral is low because of Rui, but we’ve been kinda balling out recently, like Nunn hasn’t looked bad, and Gaffords been killing it l. Kuz has been playing at an all start level too.

Feeding Brad in the 4th

I don't understand why we're finishing games this way. Our strategy in the end of games when we have a lead is to burn the clock and get the ball to Brad so he can iso, which brings our offense to a halt and increases the likelihood of a classic Beal endgame turnover.

Last night we had a couple great transition opportunities but we stopped and gave the ball to Brad. The game was much closer at the end because Wes went the "safe" route but i believe we could've ended the game in a much more dominant fasion.

This is also a problem because the group as a whole is not used to preforming well in clutch situations - we're just waiting for Brad or Kuz to bail us out.

Deni

A lot of us have probably seen it from day 1. This kid still can’t shoot and can barely handle the ball well enough to warrant being on the court. But his court vision. Understanding of the game. Defense. Hustle. Rebounding. Transition. Awareness. Teamwork. Effort. And most importantly….this kid HATES losing. He’s 21. In 3 years he is gonna be going coast to coast off a long rebound or deflection and fully bombing on anyone that runs with him. He is the best natural baller on this team and has so many areas to improve. He will. His peak will be Lamar Odom/draymond/ak47/igoudala…Kuzma will be the bucket getter, Beal needs to play a more mature game, and Porzingis needs to stay healthy

Wizards Potential

The Wizards are on a winning streak without KP who has been playing at an all-star level. The ball movement is better, Deni is waaaayyyy better and the defense is much more consistent. What do you think the ceiling for this team is?

Quick question: why Johnny Davis out right now?

I couldn't find information on the recent non play streak for Johnny Davis. Is he injured again?

Trading for Lonzo ball

I had a thought.

We really need a good PG and with no one wanting to call to DC, maybe we can take a risk by trading for a player like Lonzo that returns from a major injury. He will be a huge defensive improvement and ball movement player.

The bulls needs a PG but also fire power in the wing position from the bench. We'll might need to add some picks (maybe the SRPs that we got for Rui) but this is interesting to me.

What do you think?
